Golf apparel that is worth the cost

Recommended Posts

I don't mind paying a premium price if you are getting a premium product to go along with it. But lately it seems like a lot of the well known athletic wear brands are peddling off their name and a check mark and are charging a premium price for sub par fabrics. I really like Peter Millar and also think Puma is making some wonderful clothing. What other brands are worth the cost in terms of quality of product (particularly textile)?

Unfortunately my Cameron and Masters PM gear are getting too big.

I really like TASC athletic wear and I saw they are making golf stuff now. I may have to check that out.

Yah, it's specifically the Cameron and Masters Millar stuff I like

Dang, I just got a Masters Millar from Berkmans this year, and I put a snag in it the first time I wore it 😝

Love Peter Millar.   Holderness and Bourne is also great.

How do you guys justify paying a premium for luxury golf clothing items?  I have nice brand name golf clothes too, but they were all gifted to me by my parents.  I will usually pick up the bargain basement stuff from Target, Old Navy or Kohls as I figure clothes eventually wear down or get holes in them anyways.  Not trying to be a dick, but I would seriously like to know.

It’s like anything else, the perceived value is up to the individual.  We are all different and perceive quality differently.  It’s like the blue box Mac and cheese? Some buy it because it’s Mac and cheese. Others say hell naw and spring for the gooey velveta Mac and cheese.

I guess, harking back on the days when my parents were still buying me clothing, if I could hold forever on depending on someone else to get me better quality stuff I'd do it. And sure, back when I didn't have any money I spent my clothing budget at the discount retailers. But once I got old enough that my wardrobe aged-out before it wore out, and I realized that quality brands didn't wear down as quickly as the cheap stuff, I came to the conclusion that it was more cost effective to buy the more premium brands (as grandpa used to say, "you get what you pay for") and the materials are just so much nicer and better quality.

Buying tip: Buy summer clothing during the winter, and buy winter clothes (including things like golf pullovers and sweater vests) during the summer.
Literally all the major golf retailers offer huge discounts on the previous summer's clothing during the winter months - so, for example, if you shop carefully enough, you can buy high-end name-brand $100 short sleeve golf polos for 20-30 bucks or so (same rules apply to shorts and slacks) - because these retailers are trying to clear out inventory in preparation to the next year's releases ... or roughly, 3 for the price of 1.
Now, can you still save a buck by purchasing $15 polos at Target or Walmart?
Sure.
Just depends on taste.

FJ has some of the best materials, color combos, and finish quality..

But the absolute worst fit. I can almost size down 1.5 sizes for their polos and the sleeves are still not proportioned properly.

I have to wear their "athletic fit" polos for any semblance of a normal fit for me.  Those fit me like standard fit polos from other brands.  The options for patterns and colors decrease dramatically when limited to athletic fit.

I like Bonobos especially if you're tall, I haven't tried their shorts just their shirts. Callaway also makes great clothing as it's made by Perry Ellis, I've recently bought 5 pairs of their shorts.

As for paying the premium I just buy stuff on sale or clearance, I'm a bigger guy so usually I'll find the bigger items in stock for less than half price.

Totally agree.  Been stocking up on FJ (polos& 3/4 zip) through 2nd swing during the last year to upgrade my golf closet, and love all of it, the feel is awesome.  Not sure what is going on with their fit and proportions though lol.  Overall still really like them, and the quality and fit make them still worth it even if the sleeves are a bit longer and the 3/4 zips sleeve a bit baggy.

What about FJ socks? I got a pair of those american flag socks, I dont think i've worn them 4x as I only wear them for golf and the heels got a bunch of 'cotton bally things' all of them, they look like they're a year old.  Debating if i should take them back to GG given it was 10 bucks for a single pair.

The Athletic Fit FootJoy is so good though. Fits true to size.

Peter Millar is the right answer though.

How are athletic fit different from standard fit?  Only reason I ask is because I'm 5'7 and 175 with a narrow frame but large shoulders for reference if that makes sense.  When I'm not working with my clients or on the course, you can usually find me in the gym.  I usually wear a large or medium and hate the way most shirts fit.  I find that the shirts that taper from the arm pit down fit me way better than your standard shirts that just go straight down.
