The USA Ryder Cup team could be a train wreck

Looking deeper into the numbers, Reed, Na and Kisner don't score well on par 3s. Na is 12th in par 4 scoring average but only 37th in birdie or better on them, so he makes a bunch of pars. That's nice but you need some guys that can birdie par 3s and 4s as par 5 birdies are often a given. Berger, Scheffler and Finau are all strong on par 4 birdies, which account for the majority of the holes. I could see Na would have been a solid dependable wingman to somebody like DJ or Brooks and just let him go for broke.

 

I also think after last time Stricker could not choose Reed to be a back end player. In 2018 he made a stink when he wasn't front and center and paired with Speith, and proved he was out for himself as much as the team. You can't have that with your 12th man this time around.

Why are we discussing Kiz? I think he would be great but how did he enter this conversation? It doesn’t even appear that stricker even really considered him. If Kiz, why not Na would’ve been the argument and a solid one. I think Kiz was in the convo due to Riggs at barstool… who should have conceded once the Tour championship was over Kiz was no longer a real consideration.  
 

If Na then who does he replace? English? Scheffler? Finau, Spieth, Xander were locks right? So those three plus English? Or berger? As someone said above English looks like he really earned a spot and checks all the boxes. And Berger has been pretty solid all year and putts well.  
 

So that would make 5! I think the only guys outside of the top 12 that should have been considered are Scheffler and Na. In reality I suspect the only real outside pick Stricker ever considered, barring Na winning (he kinda did) the TC, was Scottie all along. My two cents.

The last thing I remember about English is his collapse at Memphis when he had the lead. According to the players, Ryder Cup pressure is a whole different level of pressure. I hope he does well.

From a media standpoint or on the course? On the course he's the one player on the US I feel the other side would hate to play against. If you've competed in match play before, this can be a massive factor (ex. Kiz or Poulter). I remember watching him and Rory go blow for blow a few years back and it was pure emotion, which some players who dominate stroke play can't handle.

 

I'm not a personal fan of Reed but in the spirit of the event and their team's chances this will end up being a huge loss overall IMO.

That France team deserved the firing squad.  At some point somebody has to say something sometime.  I get the team atmosphere.  It’s supposed to be behind closed doors.  But.  If you’ve  tried that , the next logical step is gassing up the bus.  We’re going to see quickly who the problem is.  They won’t be able to point fingers at him anymore unless they win and not by a last second Hail Mary.

Say something? Reed was the problem, not the solution. He only deflected criticism, as he always does.  It’s only ever someone else’s fault.

Like I said. We will see right ?  I mean he was paired with tiger. Who played as poor as possible.  He saw Brooks and DJ and that drama , and he got his pairing swapped up last second.  We may never know why or how or at who’s request.  But we know it happened.  All that suggests a team that isn’t a team. One guy can’t cause all that.  Makes no sense.

Agree. I’d sit him as much as possible after singles.  I don’t think he pairs with anyone.  DJ or finau being the only possibility.  Neither play a similar ball.

Kisner has a really good match play record. He won the WGC Match Play in 2019 and finished 2nd in 2018. Also he was undefeated at the 2017 Presidents Cup. Thing is outside of the win a couple weeks ago he's played like absolute crap in recent weeks.
