Damn stone, gutted!😭

Played a shot with my 58 yesterday and heard that dreaded noise on contact. Should I try and repair this or will it affect the bounce, leading edge etc or just leave it? Cheers

Hate to see you made a rock mark in a nice looking wedge. IMHO the gouge will not affect anything. I would file it down smooth and level though. I know you may not want to hear this but IMHO again that rock mark adds character

Our bunkers have serious problems with rock chips migrating up into the sand from bunkers that are long overdue for renovation. If it were me I'd just live with it because I'd know other gouges are going to occur no matter what I do. It's hard to take but I can't afford to replace wedges for cosmetic damage because I'd be buying a new wedge every couple months. 

 

That is a particularly ugly one, I must say. My condolences.

Several years ago I bought a brand-new-in-plastic set of AP2 irons. Played a practice round with them on Thursday, loved them. Played with my usual group on Saturday and on the sixth hole I hit the 8-iron out of a fairway bunker. Caught a stone and put a chip in the leading edge (only about half as big as yours, but still). Those irons have a couple hundred rounds on them now but that gouge on the 8-iron is still the ugliest damage on any club in the set.

 

P.S. I'm still half asleep and haven't had my second cup of coffee yet. At first reading I thought your post started, "I shot 58 yesterday". In that case I'd have said a messed up wedge would be worth it!

Take a small hammer and hold the face in one hand and tap the club with the hammer.  First tap the sole lightly and then the face.  Back and forth.  You'd be surprised how much of the dent you can repair.  

I bought a set of Ping i210s on eBay where the 7 iron had a dent just like yours.  Went for a great price because of the dent.  Now if you look at my 7 iron you wouldn't even notice the dent.  

It's really pretty easy to repair where it will look fine.

It feels tragic at the time when something like that happens especially when you're as fussy about your gear as I am! Yeah I shot 58 in my dreams!😂

Yes I think I'll get over it eventually. Played a few shots with it after that and they were all very good so if that continues all will be good!👍🏼

It will also smooth out over time if you decide not to fix it - it won’t disappear but it’ll be a lot less noticeable

I’ve had this happen before on an iron. I’m really conscious now going forward to the lie when playing so that if I’m any bunker or out in the junk, I’ll use a wedge instead of an iron since if I ding it I’ll more likely replace the club sooner. I may be in a bit of a disadvantage by doing so, but would rather lose a stroke or two instead of damaging an iron. I also avoid playing dog tracks where the course may be littered with rocks and stones everywhere.

Shouldn't affect how the club plays.

But, if for no reason other than your vanity, you could repair it with some old school JB Weld epoxy.
Use so masking tape to build a damn, level with the face, and then fill in the dent. Allow to dry, and then file/sand it to match the contour of your wedge. It may require a few applications, but it will dry light gray and should hold up pretty well.

 I have shot 58 several times - for 9 holes 😂😂
