Your favorite white polo

Hey gang,

 

I am just curious as to the community’s favorite white performance (no cotton) polo brand and style. For the golf apparel industry, this is the hardest color to handle. If the fabric is too light, the world can identify you by your nipples. If it’s too heavy, it’s a trash bag that doesn’t breathe. Thanks gang!

Peter Millar and Footjoy make a decent white shirt.  Nike white fabric is good as well.  I like pique better than smooth.  But, in general, I've given up on the solid white shirt.  They permanently look dirty after wearing them a few times.  I've relegated all of my white shirts to cooler days when I'm wearing a sweater I know I won't take off.

Holderness and Bourne makes a nice solid white shirt

I only have white in a non-polo, but my all time favorite performance fabric is Russell Athletic Dri-Fit from the early days of performance shirts (at least afaik).  It's a little heavier, denser material than any performance shirt I've purchased since then.

i usually wear some type of compression tank/shirt/long sleeve under my polos to help mitigate nipple bulges. Since I'm a messy slob almost all of my white golf polos are from Uniqlo since they're pretty cheap and fit me fairly well. I had a few white/other color Nike polos that i liked a lot and were slightly thicker material than usual but i had to chuck both of them after i couldn't get the coffee or food stains out

I have one from lululemon, but I wear it for work, usually under a 1/4 zip in cooler months. It is a cotton blend, but is supposed to be wicking and “stink free.”  I am reluctant to wear it on the course because I get stained collars from sunscreen, sweat, and dust and would hate to ruin the shirt.

I'll pick up a couple cheap ones just for this reason.

Avoid the sunscreens that have  Oxybenzone. I use the spray Alba Botanical and Neutrogena Beach Defense. They both contain 3% Avobezone but since using these 2 I haven’t ruined any white shirts. Both can be found at Costco. As far as shirts, I haven’t found any that hold up better than the Peter Millar Summer Comfort.

Use a zinc oxide based sunscreen, such as Blue Lizard.   The zinc based products won't ruin your white shirts.

Buy cheap white shirts & give away/toss when stains won't wash out.

 

I sweat a lot & no white shirt can survive multiple uses after this experience. 

 

The extra work to make them look presentable is not worth it when you can get them on the cheap.

I have a Greg Norman White polo that is just right in terms of thickness. I also prefer he way it fits as opposed to others I have.

I don’t wear them anymore.  Between sweat, dust, etc, and carrying the bag, white isn’t a good choice.

C-dog -- Since a lot of people have responded that they ruin white shirts with sunscreen and whatnot, can you offer the best way to get a fully-synthetic white shirt clean? Thanks!

I would be glad to…if you have a favorite white shirt that has sunscreen stains on it from years or use, just buy a new shirt. But, if you have one that you’ve noticed is just starting to yellow, follow these directions:

 

1) Pour baking soda on the stain and take a brush or something with bristles and just rub it around on the stain. Let it sit overnight if you can. This will get any loose oils from sticking to the fabric. 
2) Pour Dawn dish soap on it and repeat with the brush. Be sure to scrub as much as you can without damaging the fabric. Let that sit until dry. 
3) Get some Oxiclean Bright Whites and put it in the washer on warm. 
 

Pull it out and you should see the stain is gone. If not, repeat one more time.

once you accept that white sport shirts are disposable - it's all good.

 

you take one off and say - but I didn't touch anything blue.

then realize you rubbed up against something, somewhere.

 

could be a beverage stain, mosquito bite, sunscreen, course soil, ash burn, you name it.

 

unless you have AP money and can wear a new one everyday.

Try the JCrew Tech shirt for a slim fit option. If you are looking for slimming similar to what dark colors do, you may have to look elsewhere. 🙂
