Have you given up other hobbies for golf?

I stopped playing in men's flag football and basketball leagues. But i wanted to do that anyway as the amount of nutjobs in those leagues is fairly remarkable. Half of the men's flag league games ended in either brawls or threats of brawls

I also stopped skiing eventually, just because i didn't want to wreck my knee and miss a golf season

That sounds like me. I played amateur baseball in the Western Massachusetts Baseball League until I was 39. I was starting to feel the aches and pains, playing three games per week. My wife said, if you’ll give up baseball, we will join the private country club in our town. I also had to give up hockey in the winter beer league, which I’d had enough of anyway (1-concusion after being checked into the boards in a no-check league). I truly did miss playing baseball, but golfing four or five days each week at a beautifully conditioned golf course has been awesome for the last 24 years!

Me: In my late 20's I started playing more as a serious pursuit. As I've aged, golf has become my primary form of recreation. Also cycling, hiking, and fishing a bit.

Hardly surf anymore due to crowds. Go 2-3 times a year and end up frustrated by crowds that are worse than when I moved to the mountains 20 years ago to snowboard. Now live i the desert to play more golf.

Snowboarding: Tied of resort life and as I hit my mid-late 40's I was beating up the body. More golf.

I have been competitive amateur athlete all my life.  Usually involved in multiple activities too, cause I get bored easily.  Around business, I have been a road cyclist since my 20s, CAT racer till 38.  Every training ride whether 50 miles or 100 miles takes time similar to a slow round of golf.  Can't do both in the same day.

Thankfully, I don't golf every day, so off days leaves room for gym and shooting practice, and family obligations.  Fortunately, my wife has her own activities, and golf's.  I won't go into my other training activities, just say between getting older, business and family, I pick and chose what I do around golf, work and family.  It's time to retire... 😛  So, my answer to the OP's question is "yes", to some degree.

I don't play guitar or video games hardly at all now. If I'm off work early enough, I'm playing the Par 3 course. If I don't have enough time for that, I'm practicing at the city course short game area. On the weekends, I play 18 on Saturday and then the Par 3 on Sundays. I'm hopelessly addicted to this game now and it's definitely the healthiest addiction I've ever had.

It's rained non-stop here since Monday with storms rolling in like clockwork at or around 5 pm every day. I've practiced putting for hours each day but start to feel grumpy if it's been <4 days since I've taken a full swing at a ball.'

Ironically, PGA2K21 has been a savior on rainy nights when I'd putted enough.

Rising college sophomore and a D1 tennis player here.  I also play guitar everyday seriously.  I start playing tennis at a very early age and spent a year a tennis academy in Naples Florida.  However, I am seriously questioning whether I should play D1 tennis for the next three years since I discover golf with my father.  I am not on any tennis scholarship so it doesn't matter whether or not I play.  I just find golf to be much more interesting.  I've not touched the tennis racquet for almost four weeks now and I am not missing it at all.  I've been playing golf everyday since the beginning of May.  My father is very happy with that because he thinks it will be good for my future career.

DO NOT quit D1 tennis for golf.  D1 tennis is once in a lifetime.  You've invested too much, and you'll regret it for the rest of your life.  Finish what you started.  Get serious about golf after college.  Play golf on off days and off season

  • 1 year later...

I used to be a competitive road cyclist and mountain biker. I haven’t been riding on the road almost at all for several years as I am really worried about distracted drivers and getting hit etc. I was doing quite a bit of mountain biking until a few years ago. I’ve had some mild to moderate issues with vertigo etc. It doesn’t make the mountain biking very enjoyable anymore. So I pretty much never ride my bikes anymore except an occasional ride with my wife and kids. However I think as my kids get older I probably will do a little bit of leisure mountain biking with them. Nothing too serious. However I have went back to weightlifting pretty aggressively the last year like I used to when I was younger. I really really enjoy it. Also I have been practicing and playing more golf which is my first love.

Lol. Yeah I guess that joke is going to haunt me on this board.  Only one woman in my life and been married to her ever since. I guess that is why I am comfortable to joke about our marriage.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was an avid hunter and fisherman my entire life.  As time went on I found myself wanting to play more golf.  By my 40's I had given up hunting (for the most part) and only get out fishing a handful of times a year.  Funny... when I'm having a bad round I think about getting back into other hobbies, when I'm playing well.... I don't give anything but golf another thought.

One hobby I got rid of that I have recently been thinking of getting back into is the competitive paintball scene. Seems to be a little resurgence going on

I've gone the other way and kinda been playing less golf and more pickleball.

i think everyone when they start getting serious about golf, it becomes a way of life and they give up everything else to get better at it. but eventually they all reach a plateau so to speak, so they start looking for other things to learn/get better at

Got deep into fishing when I lived in South FL where the golf sucks.  Then moved northeast, got hurt, and thought I'd never play golf again.  Plan was to buy a boat and fish every weekend....then figured out how to play golf again, and all thoughts of boating became ancient history.  There aren't enough days in the week!

I can't find time for any other time-consuming hobbies, between work, youth sports, family time, and golf.  I am a serious cook, but the time commitment is manageable.

So to answer the question -- yes, I gave up boating and fishing.

Sounds like I’m the same as a bunch here… slowly gave up fishing aside from a few days a year, and haven’t taken out the mountain bike for more than a ride around the neighbourhood in who knows how long.

With the popularity of indoor simulators even my hockey thru the winter has significantly scaled back since the start of the Pandy and replaced by hitting balls in the screen.

Gave up basketball and running, decided to workout/lift more, using the new extra time for practice/range sessions...and a couple of extra rounds during the week.
