Well, in fairness to TW, in the latter part of 2009 he had a lot of stuff going on. It must have been a burden on his mind to keep track of all the burner cellphones, the names of all the Perkins girls, the code names to use during those secret trips to Vegas, the cover story of the week to use with Elin, and how many popsicles Hank consumed. Plus he never knew when Rachel Uchitel might call. No wonder his game was off.

Let's see, Jack was second in 15 of 19 some fairly talented golfers, certainly a little better pedigree than YE Yang.  Jack took second to some decent golfers, in their own right.  Arnold Palmer twice (1960 US Open as an amateur, 1964 Masters), Lee Trevino four times (1968 US Open, 1971 US Open, 1972 Open, 1974 PGA), Roberto DeVincenzo (1967 Open), Gary Player (1968 Open), Johnny Miller (1976 Open), Tom, Watson four times (1977 Masters, 1977 Open, 1981 Masters, 1982 US Open), Seve Ballesteros (1979 Open), Hal Sutton (1983 PGA).

Jack did take second to Tony Lema (1964 Open), Bobby Nichols (1964 PGA), Dave Marr (1965 PGA), Charles Coody (1971 Masters).  Not bad golfers but certainly not as accomplished to the hackers mentioned in the paragraph above. 

Sheesh, keep it in perspective.  Jack is, in my opinion, the GOAT.

I remember being on the 18th fairway at Hazeltine when Yang sank the putt to win it..

 

The guy behind me (wearing a American flag tank top holding beers in both hands) asked "How many holes do they have left?" I replied "this is the last hole sir".

 

He replied" So did the guy from China Win?"

 

I replied "You mean the gentleman from Korea?, yes he won"

 

Ill never forget that moment as long as I live

US Open 2009 - Lucas Glover is a better all round player than Mickelson/

The Masters 2009 - Cabrera, Campbell and Perry - the most exciting major finish...EVER!

 

In typing that, how bad was 2009? Cabrera, Glover, Cink and Yang as major winners. That is brutal! 

 

Wow...I never put that all together for all these years- the major winners of 2009.  The 2009 PGA Grand Slam of Golf must have been the worse TV ratings in the history of golf!

GB, you are on to something here. Love the part about Hank and the popsicles. I read Hank's book and that was one of several weird things about Tiger that Hank wrote about.

There are two years that stick out to me as real stinkers. 2009 is one, 2003 is the other - Mike Weir, Jim Furyk, Ben Curtis and Shaun Micheel. JF lifts it a little beyond 2009 but not by much.

Thing is aside from the non-descript winners, it was actually a decent year of tournaments to watch. That 2009 US Open at Bethpage had a run from Duval, Mickelson nearly won it. 2009 Open was obviously a must-watch event, even if the ending wasn't satisfying. And it was pretty thrilling to see someone take on Tiger and win at the time, hadn't happened before.

 

2009 Masters wasn't a classic but I'll always remember that Tiger-Mickelson grouping on Sunday. They were never likely to win it overall, but they really got close, both got to -6 on their rounds at some point, Mickelson went out in 30 shots.

Don’t really matter who, and Jack blew a few of those. There was certainly a lot less competition for those top three spots than there have been for the last 25 years. Something that some on wrx deny but Jack himself has stated often.

Then it's a matter of perspective.  Can't teleport Jack in his prime to today with advanced equipment or teleport the top, say, 50 players today to play against those pedestrian golfers of the 60s-80s.  Bummer since we'll debate about this to the end of days.
