Where to work remote in August / September

Recommended Posts

Want to take advantage of my work from home set up before my office reopens this fall. Thinking about doing a long term rental/airbnb for a month later this summer.

Any recommendations for somewhere in the midwest/southeast?

Priorities

At least a few good golf courses within 15-20 minutes and some good practice facilities

Some outdoor activity relatively close (lake, ocean, mountain) would be great

Don't need a ton of night life, but a few good restaurants/bars/breweries

Let me know what you think!!

Crossville, TN. It'll be warm and humid but it's up on a plateau, so maybe not as bad as the surrounding area. Lots of courses with nice practice areas. Plenty of rental properties because they cater to golf vacationers.

I recommend Bertram Realty as a first call. I've booked several golf trips through them. They own some of their own villas so they could probably hook you up quite nicely for not a lot of dough.

Just a tip on the working from another state thing. Be careful about letting your office know.

I know a few people at my company who went to another state and I guess it causes tax liabilities in the state being worked in.

As for places to play I like the Ashville suggestion. Also upstate NY like the Utica area or near the finger lakes would be a decent option as well.

Northern Michigan! Tons of great public courses, low humidity, upper 60’s during the day, stays light until 10pm. How can you beat that?

never been but living in the chicago area have been to central/west michigan to golf and the north it is high on my golf trip list. Couldnt like this suggestion more

To the OP... This is good advice. Either confirm with your company that you can work remotely in another state for an extended period of time, or don't say a word about it to anyone and hope they don't find out.

Due to tax and labor law implications, some companies require employees (even remote ones) to reside in the same state or sometimes even the same city as the company headquarters

2nd northern michigan ... maybe get some good twilight deals, & prolly a few decent deals on cheap, minimalist airbnb somewhere ... and you can take extended trips across the mack, or ferry across to wisconsin ...

Ill third this, norther michigan is awesome but I would do the reverse of this recommendation and stay in Wisconsin (Just north of Milwaukee)  Easy day trips to Whistling Straits, Sand Valley, and Erin Hills with a huge amount of great public offerings as well.  Then take the trips across the lake for Norther Michigan to Arcadia, Kingsley, and Forest Dunes (and the loop).  Northern Michigan has great public golf as well, but I think Wi is just stronger overall with all things factored in.  I would not enjoy the southeast in late summer.  Way to humid.

I'm a consultant and (pre-covid) worked in multiple states every year, so there's a defined process for billing hours by location / dealing with tax considerations but thanks for the heads up!

It’s fascinating to me that there can be so many premium courses in the Northern Michigan/Wisconsin area. It seems like the short season would make it financially dicey.

Anywhere south of a line roughly st. louis, Louisville, DC will be miserably hot and humid during late august early September (unless you get into the mountains).

I like that northern Michigan recommendation.

Figure out the tax ramifications of what you are doing and if it goes by location you are physically working in, do the Crossville, TN recommendation and avoid state income tax for that time.  Depending upon what you make and what the tax rate is where you typically work from, the difference may come close to paying for your rental.

Northern michigan.

Rent a place on a lake.  Mullet lake/burt lake so you on water.  Will be a little drive to golf but worth it.   Close to mackinaw etc for food. And plenty in cheboygan.
head over to Boyne for some golf (bay harbor, crooked tree, arthur hills) or about 15 minutes away Hidden River

head down to arcadia one weekend.
can head north over the bridge.
weather would be absolutely perfect at that time.

Does it have to be in the US? If not I would say St. Andrews. Tons of courses, and with the 6hr time difference you can play every morning, and work from 2:00pm local time till 10:00pm.

  • 1 month later...

Do you have a set schedule for work hours? I work ET 9-6 so I seriously seriously considered doing the same thing you're thinking but in Oregon/ WA so I'd be off at 3 PT. I would say Orlando has a ton of public courses available for relatively cheap this time of year. But, conditions can be hit or miss, it's effing hot, and it's going to rain almost every afternoon until October. Wisconsin and Pinehurst would also be on my list. Sounds like you I just need to rent an RV
