Srixon z785 vs Srixon Zx7

I have some 785s, haven't played the ZX7 but holding them next to each other in the store the 785 looks to show a touch less offset to me.  The ZX7 are probably really great irons, worth every penny BUT, so are the 785s.  If you are looking to save a few bucks or just have easier access to them, the 785 will not disappoint.  I would not expect there to be any massive difference between them in terms of feel or performance.  I played the 745 for a long time and multiple times.  I never thought Srixon could top them but I actually prefer the 785 as the sole is a little more narrow than the 745, everything else is close.

I don't have an answer for you, but I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I went back to my 785's from the zx7.

The feel is better with 785, I think they are easier to it and nicer to look at.

They spin a bit more as well, as the ZX7 I found to be hard to work at all, and coming in to hot into the greens.

Good irons! like them much more then the P770's, but the last 2 Srixon models are way better in my opinion.

I couldn’t hold greens with the zx7 irons. Tried 2 different shafts too. Just didn’t spin for me. Went back to my t100 and problem solved. For shame, zx7 look and feel great & really wanted them to work.

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

I've had both sets with the same shafts as well. I prefer the 785s but the ZX7s look much better. I had the 785s in the bag for a while but the ZX7s lasted only a few rounds.

The 785's are an impressive set of irons, from a performance perspective.

I like the sole width , feel, and consistency.

Would think the ZX7's  to be simular, I think you would be satisfied with either. If I was in the market, I would choose the newest.

Thats just my 2 cents, and if I was in the market, which I am not. Like I stated above,

The 785's are an impressive set of irons.

Wow...these comments are blowing me away!! Had no idea so many guys trying the ZX7’s are ending up going back to the 785’s and prefer them over the ZX7’s.

I just picked up a set of 785’s because I was tired of waiting for an order I had with Srixon for the ZX5’s.

The early results with the 785’s are really good though for sure. The feel is phenomenal, and love the launch and accuracy with the N.S. Pro Modus3 Tour 120 shafts.

Feel much better about my decision to pull the trigger on the 785’s and not wait after reading this thread!

I don’t have enough rounds with the ZX7 to be definitive. But coming from the 745 I think you will prefer the shape of the ZX7 at address. It has a toe that more closely resembles the 745.

The sole is also similar with the notch on the heel side, although I’m not sure it makes that much of a difference.

At address the top line is thicker on the ZX7 which makes the blade length appear shorter than 785, but it’s really not that much.

785 are probably more forgiving, but I don’t have enough shots to be certain. It’s close either way.

I think the feel goes to the ZX7. They feel phenomenal. 785 are great too but the ZX7 are better.

I’d happily play 785 if they were significantly cheaper. But if price is not an issue I’d get the newer model

Over the years I’ve had the 745 and only gamed then a short time but still own them, 1.5 seasons with the 765, a season with the 785 and now about 20 rounds with the ZX7.

745 feel great, soft face, ball really flies. Bought new 765s with Modus120x a few years ago and have had the same model shafts in the 85 and ZX7 so more apples to apples.

Contrary to what most people tend to feel, I actually loved my 765s. Uber forgiving for the profile and I got their worth out of them before selling and moving on. 785s actually felt denser to me at impact- definitely soft when you mush one in the center bit mishits were more clicky/dense to me than 45 and 65.
85s definitely appear to have more narrow soles.
Overall I thought forgiveness was 765>745>785 on misses away from center of the face, but 785 were most manipulable (is that even a word?!) with the narrower sole. They’re better getting out of thick rough and really all around great clubs.

I made my first ace with the 785 9-iron last year so they will always have a place in one of my bags. I think.

ZX7 to me are the best of the bunch though. 20 rounds in and there are still some shots that I’m amazed at even compared to the 785/65s. Numerous fatted long irons on par 3s or from the fairway on approaches leaving me putting when I would have thought I’d be dead; even yesterday I was surprised at a how a fat chunky 6-iron went dead straight to the front edge of the green.
Something about the sole and bounce to me are perfect.
Thin shots tend to fly almost there too.
Shot my first even par round EVER at my home club with them last month (in ~200 total rounds?).

I was holding onto my 745s as a project to reshaft with the modus 120x but just thinking about buying a backup ZX7 sometime and selling the 45s.

Awesome feedback! I just got the 785’s recently and really like them so far. Will definitely consider getting the ZX7 or ZX5 when it’s time to switch it up.

Have you hit the ZX5’s or did you consider a combo set? That’s the only issue I’m having so far with the 785’s, I find the long irons pretty unforgiving and have been trying different options in the 4-iron (Z 565, P790, and now a P770).

With my next set, I’d consider ZX5 in the 4-5 spots and ZX7 6-PW, or could even go ZX5 4-PW...we’ll see.

That's kinda the one downfall it seems for the Srixon is that they don't spin as much as other irons. If you're a high spin player naturally these could be great irons but if you're lacking spin or just at that threshold then you won't hold greens.

I'm lucky cause I put a lot of spin on the ball naturally so these knock the spin down a bit but I can still hold greens most of the time.

I had the ZX7’s and also ended up going back to my Z785’s.

I prefer the shape and longer blade length appearance of the Z785’s. The slightly wider sole works better for me as well.

My ZX7 7-PW were too low on spin ( Steelfiber i110cw ) for me, and even weakened them by 1.5* to get me some added launch and spin.  I now have a full set of ZX5 5-GW incoming that I will re-shaft with i95 Regular.  I really liked the ZX5  5-6 in my ZX7 combo - great distance, forgiveness, feel, and good looks with not much chunk visible on the backside.

I am actually currently switching my combo set to full set of 785s. Pulling my 585s in the long irons and replacing with 785s. I do like the 585s , I just need the ability to work them a bit more, hoping I don’t miss the forgiveness as the 585s I get away with a lot of questionable swings. These 585 heads could use a new home if you were interested

Makes sense if you’re looking for workability. I’m actually fine with the 785’s up to the 4-iron, but just looking for something in that spot that I can get more consistency from since it’s a club I use a lot (3/4 iron).

I’ve tried a P790, U85, Z 565, and now a new P770 in that 4-iron spot. I think the biggest issue with the P790, U85, and 565 were probably shafts that didn’t fit my swing, and didn’t like the turf interaction or lack of feel with the P790 or U85. Hoping the P770 w/ Modus3 120 shaft will do the trick, and otherwise like my 785’s from 5-PW so far.
