Cantlay hate?

I don't feel strongly one way or the other but prefer watching others.  He's slow, and stoic which doesn't particularly add up to must see tv.  I do appreciate that he has had more to overcome than most and he has succeeded where many have faltered.

Furyk's line-up-to-putt-then-back-away-and-start-all-over had me openly rooting against him as he squatted, hitched his pants, plumb-bobbed, etc.

 

Padraig Harrington insisted on walking from any potential pitch ~50 yds to the green or hole and back.  It was legal in terms of him seeing and feeling the land contours under his feet - as he said himself - but it took forever.

 

I despaired when Sean O'Hair was in form and seemed destined for a long run at the top with his OCD ball marking & aligning nonsense.  Get on with it.

 

Keith Mitchell was mostly unknown to me until the Quail Hollow event this year but his waggle nonsense quickly nullified any interest in cheering the underdog.

 

Cantlay's toe-tapping and other tics in previous years had me tapping equally briskly on my DVR FF button while swearing oaths.  Sycophant announcers praised him for 'cutting down on the happy feet' but he's still far too slow.

Not the most entertaining player to watch. It is not easy to watch him address the ball and shuffle his feet so many times.

The foot movement on the greens drives me a little crazy. But it’s not worse than watching Sergio on the tee box.

those of us who have seen him in the Long Beach area since he was a kid know otherwise. He is a very polite young man, and has been coached well by Jamie Mulligan who was a local pro at Skylinks GC before moving over to the head pro position at Virginia CC...Jamie is also a very polite soft spoken man which probably accounts for PC's personality....Jamie's mom was one of the nicest people from the Women's club at various Long Beach courses...IMO PC is a refreshing change back to the old school type of pro, who has a tighter circle of friends and not so concerned about how many hits he gets on his social media accounts...count me in as a big PC fan

I totally agree, plus he is a former Bruin, which is my second favorite school next to the one where I work.

Agree.  He's like Kawhi Leonard.  Just goes about his business, doesn't care about being the center of attention on social media and let's his game do the talking.  A pro's pro.

Good style, seems to be a gracious winner and doesn't complain. Does his thing and doesn't let anyone / anything get in the way of it. Gotta respect that.

He's a jerk and acts like he's above the little people.

He used to be even more "deliberate" but he's cleaned that up somewhat. Just the kind of guy who let's his clubs do the talking and doesn't get emotional, which is something that garners mostly indifference not love/hate. Seems very polite and the 1 time I've seen him play IRL I was very impressed by the way he managed himself around the course.

Nothing particularly wrong with his personality, I don't think people would care that much if he was a dullard off the course if he had a more exciting style on it. Hogan was more interesting on the course, there was an aura or mystique about him, with his swing and approach. Cantlay is just too slow and methodical and not particularly interesting in how he plays golf.

 

Like Dustin Johnson often gives really dull interviews and press conferences and offers no insight of note on a regular basis. But the way DJ plays is exciting and fun to watch.

Its not hate (dont know how you can hate anyone without knowing them) i would just rather watch other players, all of the other players to be honest, apart from maybe keegan bradley, them 2 in a 2 ball and im switching off

He is a great player and I'm sure he is a nice guy, but not the easiest to watch. I counted 14 looks at the target, 14 resets of his feet, and 14 waggles.

Personality of a rice cracker doesn’t help. Listened to a couple of podcasts in which he was interviewed. His back story might be up there with the most intriguing in professional golf but his delivery of that makes me think of watching paint dry.

I like Cantlay, and I actually disagree with most of what's been said in this thread so far, I find that usually it's the quiet introverted people that have a heck of a lot more going on on the inside if you take the time to have a real conversation with them.  Whereas the loud extroverted people who you see as "not boring" tend to have very little substance on the inside,  they'll wave and smile and tell jokes and be colorful, but after a while you realize that's all you'll ever get, there aren't any layers.

Yeah, that video iBanesto posted displays exactly why I am not a fan of Cantlay.  Was he expecting the target to move?  Nothing I like hearing less during a tournament broadcast than "and now over to [insert broadcaster name here] who is with Patrick Cantlay", though it does provide an opportune time for a bathroom break.   Give me Matt Jones any day, and he could be a total jerk for all I know.
