Cantlay hate?

The fidgety players start deep in the red ink with me.

Furyk's line-up-to-putt-then-back-away-and-start-all-over had me openly rooting against him as he squatted, hitched his pants, plumb-bobbed, etc.

Padraig Harrington insisted on walking from any potential pitch ~50 yds to the green or hole and back.  It was legal in terms of him seeing and feeling the land contours under his feet - as he said himself - but it took forever.

I despaired when Sean O'Hair was in form and seemed destined for a long run at the top with his OCD ball marking & aligning nonsense.  Get on with it.

Keith Mitchell was mostly unknown to me until the Quail Hollow event this year but his waggle nonsense quickly nullified any interest in cheering the underdog.

Cantlay's toe-tapping and other tics in previous years had me tapping equally briskly on my DVR FF button while swearing oaths.  Sycophant announcers praised him for 'cutting down on the happy feet' but he's still far too slow.

I agree with you 100%.  The Furyk garbage he does on the green really bothers me.  I really would like to see the Tour address this issue of taking too much time hitting shots.

Unfortunately, people who play golf, watch this trash and think it is the acceptable norm of the game and they take it to their course, follow suit and then we have 5 hour rounds.

I like Cantlay, and I actually disagree with most of what's been said in this thread so far, I find that usually it's the quiet introverted people that have a heck of a lot more going on on the inside if you take the time to have a real conversation with them.  Whereas the loud extroverted people who you see as "not boring" tend to have very little substance on the inside,  they'll wave and smile and tell jokes and be colorful, but after a while you realize that's all you'll ever get, there aren't any layers.

Onions have layers. Parfaits too. Parfaits might be the most delicious thing on the planet...

No strong feelings either way about him, I like that he lets his play do the talking for him. I much prefer his personality type over the big mouth tough guys.

Eh. After careful attention in watching him for a couple years. I love to watch his swing.  I’d pay to watch him over Bryson or Bruce any day .

but to start with I did say “ anybody but cantlay “.  Turns out he’s a pros pro as others have said.  No BS. Just business.

"Hating" a relatively bland pro golfer who says very little, has 4 career wins and has largely floated in the 20-50 range in the world and is now 7th ....Should be the actual definition of "Internet"

Just give a WRXer a chance and we’ll find a reason to dislike everyone.

Exactly. People disliked Davis Love back in the day because he didn't smile much, imagine if his prime was during WRX days.

I like Cantlay, but that's largely because I followed the 2011 US Am final at Erin Hills so I followed his career and his recovery from physical and personal issues the past couple of years. People forget how he and Spieth used to be the 2 big young guns coming up at one point in time. The guy has a great swing but unfortunately doesn't seem to be a big people person and fidgets quite a bit, so be it. Everybody's different, and in a time where so many are infatuated with engineered social media conflicts I appreciate a guy that just goes about his business and doesn't celebrate himself or play the drama game.

The term "Hating" is such an overused term these days.  Honestly it borders on absolutely ridiculous and irrational.  Just because someone doesn't care or like someone or something doesn't mean they hate that person or thing.  In my day we used the term hate for a more visceral reaction, not because we don't care for something.  Today's social media has moments of being a drama queen on steroids.  🙄

With regard to Patrick Cantlay, I like that he is all business and focused to be the best at his craft and that he is rather good at golf.

Solid swing , very forgettable personality.

as far as how it comes across on TV, yes.  Of course, unless one of us knows him personally, we have no idea what is actual personality is.

But, I agree, as far as a "TV personality" while watching a tourney, it is very unentertaining.

100%.

I’m not a huge Cantlay fan or hater but I get the vibe you reference from him.

From life experience, the more schmoozy, loud, “exciting” and attention seeking someone is, the less they have going on under the surface.  That behavior is a defense mechanism.

But, we live in a world that doesn’t like substance and thinks my post is TLDR since it’s more than one sentence… so the hate on Cantlay doesn’t shock me.

For not being all that exciting, Patrick appears to be doing just fine, however:

I don't hate any golfers, though I do root against some (that's part of being a sports fan, right...as someone growing up in NYC, I root against every Boston team and, perversely, am happier when they lose than when NYC teams win...which these days is rare indeed!).

I root against Rahm, Brooks, BDC, Keegan and Sergio...no surprises here...they're among the more polarizing golfers out there.  But hate?  I've never met them, and even among people I've met in my life, there are very few (any?) that I actually hate.

Every time I see Sergio I think about him spitting in that cup. Can't get past how nasty & disrespectful towards the other players it was. I have been very frustrated on  golf courses before, but I have always handled it with dignity and respect for other golfers. Oh well, to get back on topic, I mentioned the pitter pattering feet of Cantlay earlier, but he just has a routine that doesn't bode well on national TV with some viewers. He actually handles himself with a lot of character. He appears to handle his frustrations with himself with mutterings under his breath. He also seems aware of where the hot mic's are.  4 wins at his age is not shabby in the least. There is a lot of talent out there.

All tour pros are hated on this board by groups of ppl here.  The hate most likely comes working, children, ground under repair, and other daily frustrations...

Pick any great person in history - to you - and I promise there will be hundreds of thousands of ppl who will make you list of why they don't like your guy/gal...

It's just the way we are wired, and why the advanced races in the universe avoid the Earth like the plague...😂

if there is one criticism I have of PC, he needs a better clothes stylist..all black is fine, but white shoes with black pants is a golf fashion faux pas, same with the white hat with an all black outfit...

 3w,

Since when is that a faux pas? That's a great look, it's a lot better than a monochrome black everything.

I'm not a fashion guy so take my question/opinion for what its worth.

I must have missed the memo, why does this guy rub so many the wrong way?

It would probably help his case if he didn't look like he smelled a fart all the time.

He looks like he needs to lighten up and have some more fun on the course.

His fidgeting reminds me of Doug Sanders.

I don't know anything about him other than he's one of the guys I hit the FF button on. If he hits a good shot I'll go back and watch it but I'm old and don't have enough time left on earth to watch that kind of a PSR. I play with a guy who waggles and looks up and down and up and down. He's a nice guy and as I like being around him I've learned to not watch him go through his PSR. I wish I could hit a real life FF button sometimes.

Agree with your statement, but these are sport competitions for entertainment on TV. Not get to know players by in-depth interviews. Everything is face value for entertainment. I like to watch any great golf, but watching him stand over a ball is tough. A few times I noticed the TV networks cutting out some of him standing over the ball and show just before he hits a shot.

Very similar to watching Nadal play tennis, apart from he seems to have his underwear in order.

Great player though and to come back from where he has been is inspirational.
