Are any of these guys on tour actually built/strong? Is fitness that impactful in golf?

U don’t have to be “big” to be great…period

It helps in some sports but is not necessary in other sports imho

Here's some data I agree with...

"A recent study concluded that total muscle mass decreases by nearly 50 percent for people between the ages of 20 and 90. On average, people lose about 30 percent of their strength between ages 50 and 70, and another 30 percent of what’s left per decade after that. Generally, people lose about 1 percent of their lean muscle mass per year after age 40."

40 is a pivotal age.

Since about 55, I have been in an ongoing battle to maintain strength and flexibility.  Thank God for the gym.  Genetics play a part for me too.  Only being a foodie and ardent cook doesn't help... LOL

I'm still strong, but not nearly as much as when I was in my teen's, 20's and early 30's before my kidneys failed.  40 is a pivotal age.  From here on out it's all down hill for me, lol.

The focus on fitness the past 25 or so years is totally the opposite of when I played high school and college golf. I remember in 1967 or 1968 GOLF magazine had an article telling golfers to NOT do any weight training! Instead golfers were supposed to be doing stretching to lengthen muscles. You were not supposed to be bulked up. And when I went to college our team did no workouts and I know that Oklahoma State and Oklahoma U. and pretty sure that no teams did weight training. Played in quite a few tournaments with those guys and they spent their time playing and practicing. At some less important tournaments there would be players smoking while they played and coaches said nothing about it. Of course back in college then there were quite a few guys that had been to Vietnam and were very good players, who made it back and were on college teams. They were usually about 23-25 year old veterans and after what they had been through they weren't going to pay much attention to what a coach told them.

If Forrest Gump hadn't already used up his eligibility & graduated before he went to Vietnam, he'd have been one of them.

Fitness has come a long way since then.  I started weight training when I was 19.  So 1999 when there were whispers here and there about Tiger working out for golf.  I figured it wouldn't hurt.  Added stretching the year after after I figured out that having a bigger shoulder turn would help me generate a little more ss.  I've always done plyometrics and speed training for baseball back in the day which is very similar to speed training for golf.  And now it's 2021.  Everybody on tour does golf fitness.  It's more detail oriented now and complex since the early days but the concepts have always remained the same.  I've learned a lot over the years about sports in general and how our bodies move.  I'm a better/more well rounded personal trainer now with all the knowledge I've accumulated from my colleagues, clients(pro level athletes), workout out partners and physios throughout the years compared to my younger years.

Do you prefer the western or eastern fervid?

My club was once infested with eastern fervids. Our grounds crew, while hard working & well-intentioned, could not get a handle on the situation. Given my superior genetics and my ability to throw darts with my irons, I took matters into my own hands and killed the varmints by launching stinger 2 irons that would decapitate them.

I would then take the warm bodies to our club's chef who kept them in the kitchen's walk-in freezer until the club's big end of summer bash. Then everyone had their fill of fine eastern fervids. A grand time was had by all--young & old!

The same “stinger 2 irons” you reach all the par 5s with?! 😂

Exactly, why the 2 irons are getting harder and harder to come by. Thankfully I’m able to have mine designed and hand crafted by the same artisans that created Tigers Nike MB blades.

That's why I feel a tinge of awe when I think of you.

But we're losing sight of the fervids. They really make for a lively party.

Nope, maybe you're comparing BK to one of the larger LBs, but the average LB is about Fred Warner size. I think BK and Fred Warner are very similar build.

Fred Warner is 230lbs and lean.  Koepka is 190lbs on his best day.  There's about 45lbs of muscle separating Brooks and Fred Warner.

Since we are already in the ditch and it sounds like we have some knowledgeable guys here regarding lifting, any benefit to military press and decline press in addition to regular flat bench?

I loathe lifting btw but am getting that age where I need to do something to maintain what muscle mass I have and not being so soft would be nice too.  From waist down and chest up including arms I am happy and still muscular.  Core sucks though.  Flexibility is not anywhere near as good when I was playing ball and stretching regular.

If you ask me, military press is more important than any form of bench press (depending on your goals).  Military press requires a lot more total body tension, particularly core and upper back.  Flat bench press is the most overrated lift, IMO.

If you want to build muscle in your chest, opt for the various dumbbell presses over barbell.  The barbell bench press variations, unless you have a very strong mind-muscle connection with your pecs, will usually be dominated by your shoulders and triceps.

I hear ya but Everybody bench form stink! 🤣

All Shoulder and tris? That means he’s even stronger if he’s not using his chest primarily. Buts that would be impossible.

Bottom line is no matter what the form, 225x15 is very strong.

Barbell bench press is more anterior deltoid than pecs dominant.  The flat barbell bench press is not a great pec builder.

Yes it is. Bench press is an awesome pec builder. I can say first hand that if you’re doing it right, in the right set/rep range, and eat right, it will blow up your chest.

I don’t know why some don’t get results. Could be genetics and/or  form/rep range.

But overhead presses won’t build your chest. Flys? Not enough weight.

Anybody and everybody with a jacked chest started their foundation with good old bench press.

Here is the king of chests routine. Bench first and second

Ill just add that dumbbells are a great substitute for barbells for flat/incline bench. More natural range of motion and easier on shoulders.
