pin-hole "crack" in driver face --question

Hey Guys --My beloved Mavrik Max has a small "hole" in the face , i don't believe it cracked through or anything. But it's enough of a "hole" that i can stick the pointy end of a tee in there and feel the hole. It's small though, like i said not much bigger than the pointy end of a tee, but you can see it if you look

 

I hit about 20-25 balls on the range with it after and performance seemed to be 100%.

 

Are drivers rugged enough to deal with this type of thing, or is this the type of thing that will cause the face to fail any day now?

 

Normally i wouldn't care, but i have a tournament this weekend and this is by far my favorite driver. I'm worried i'm gonna use it and it's gonna crack during the round

MechE and structural analyst here.  It might make it 1000 more shots or 1 more.  Personally I wouldn't trust it to last the tournament.  Best bet would be to try and find a used head locally.

Does the hole go all the way through the face? Might be worth posting a picture.

I don't believe it goes "through" the face no, but I did crack the surface. As mentioned it's very small

Might be worth contacting Callaway, see if you can speak to someone in the tech department. At least they can let you know if it is ok to use.

There is a small dot in the face of my TM driver, but it is nearer the middle of the face.

I'm pretty pissed, have a tournament tomorrow and i don't have confidence in my other driver...

 

Of course this would happen.

lol thats supposed to be there. it's a tooling jig hole. go play and dont worry about it. There should be 2-3 more on the face of the driver. I have them on mine, too.

That's kinda bizarre a little pinhole like that........ I'd run er and bring the spare in case. I would hope Callaway would warranty that for you.

I'd say play with it and contact Callaway in the meanwhile to get a clear cut answer.

That actually looks like a void in the metal of the face vs something that was created by impact with a grain of sand or something else, I.e. a manufacturing defect.

 

Since you're unlikely to get a replacement in time I'd just wail away at it and what happens, happens.

Where are they on these 2? I know the TM's have a little machined hole in the center, this does not look like that to me.

I've seen it before. I dont think its on all drivers. Dont know if its a certain model, face type, factory that made it, etc - but I've seen it. 

 

The hole is to perfect to be made by someone while playing or by accident. It's a machine mark.

I don't recall ever seeing it there before, and i'm not typically a person who missed things like this. I've owned this driver 2 years.

 

Anyway, i dont really have enough confidence in my Cobra Radspeed right now....so i will probably play with it and see what happens.

If that hole doesn't go through it'll probably be ok.  It might be a tooling mark.  Too hard to tell from that picture.

Again it's weird because i would've noticed it in the 2 years i've owned the driver so i know it's recent.

 

Just has to last me like 50 more shots. After this weekend i'll get in a lot of practice with my Cobra.

Back in time, I know it was common for OEM foundries to weld small voids in Ti heads and then "polish" them.  This is what it might be.

If it's not a true "crack", I wouldn't be overly concerned.  It doesn't even look as deep as the "grooves" on the driver face.  I've definitely heard of some TM drivers having a similar pinhole but I thought that it was typically in the center of the face.

Doesn't look like it's round enough to be a tooling mark, seems like a void. Or it could be a speed hole to make the driver go faster.

 

Now watch R&D teams will be scrambling to design this.

OK, i ran some water over the face, there's no hint of bubbling or anything. Seems to run over that area as smoothly as anywhere else.

 

Not scientific i know. But given that i trust this driver and based on the feedback --Gonna whack away with it and hope for the best

You'd have to submerge it under water for it to bleed bubbles. ...

Wouldn't it bubble a tiny bit if the hole went through? I ran it under a tap and then when i stopped the water just cleared off the face quickly. I would've thought you'd see some tiny erratic things going on there if there was a hole in the face. Like small amount of bubbling

 

But i don't know - i'm dumb with these sorts of things

All I can say is that I completely sympathize. I had a shaft snap in my driver right before U.S. Am qualifying several years ago. 

 

I didn't have the luxury of having a backup, so I tried to scare up a replacement quick with limited funds, then went out and had one of the worst rounds of my life. Totally sucks.

 

But, you've got backups and you are a good player. Whether you use the Maverick or a backup, it's still you swinging it. Have faith and go play!

The first thing I thought was "void" as well, although i'm not an expert there. I would simply contact Callaway and play the driver in the meantime. Either it is not a structural concern and you'll be fine, or it is and you'll find out pretty quickly! 😅

Immerse it in hot water.  The hot water will cause the air in the head to expand.  If there is a hole, it will bubble.  Alternatively, take a small pin and see if it goes into the head.

If it does he might have a driver head full of water for his tourney. A little extra SW lol.  Just play it as is and worry about it after; but that being said I know you won't be able to get it out of your mind now.
