Took a mid week Getaway, Williamsburg Resort trip.

Finding out on Friday that I'll be off from work Tues-Sat I decided very last minute to head somewhere to golf. I looked at some Blue Ridge packages but decided on Williamsburg. Under $400 for 2 days 1 night with "unlimited" golf. Not knowing the area I called to make T times. Was told then that the Gold course was being punched the 2 days I was there, and that the Green course was my only real choice for both days. Fingers crossed it would be a good course, but still it's time off, time out of town, and time spent on a golf course. I made it tough for me to be disappointed. 

 

Arrived at 2 for a planned 3PM tee time. Met in the parking lot and offered to load my bag, and I told him I was walking. I'm optimistic, I'm very active and usually tend to walk when I'm solo. I got a weird look from the club guy and the pro shop guy. I was sent right out. A pair of younger members rolled past as I was walking to 1, I told them to go ahead. I'm a single and not planning on pushing them and theyre in a cart, so it shouldn't be a hold up. They hit away and I waited until they were putting until I teed off. I never saw them again. 

 

First, the Green Course is beautiful. Fairways were great, greens were fast, bunkers were all kind of wet and hardpack. It was over 90* with 80+% humidity. I was soaked through by the second hole. This is not a walkers course. I really started to feel it on 4. This is where I lost my other glove, which I had been alternating. I stopped to get water and I was shaking too bad to sign my receipt legibly. By 7 I had it in my head that I was going to quit after 9. Everything hurt. I felt like I was at cardio max and still pushing forward. I'm over weight, but I average 20K steps and 20+ flights at work, I walk golf courses all the time, and I cycle 40-60 miles a week on hilly terrain. This was a soul crushing walk. 

 

The 1/4 mile walk uphill from 9 to the clubhouse was painful. Passing thru the parking lot a guy who had just finished kind of asked if I wanted his cart to take up. I got in and decided to play the back nine riding. Sadly the damage was already done. 

 

Day 2 was a lot smoother. So much so. I took a cart this time and shot really well. Being in a cart on day 2 I took the time to take a picture of every "Steep Hill" sign. They were everywhere and that's what really killed me. The T box and fairway or green may be the same level, but you go down and back up 100 feet in between. My club distances were weird and I don't know if it was elevation or a small swing change or my Garmin watch getting bad readings? Hit my 80 yard wedge over a 100 yard green. Left my 180 yard 6i 10 yards short of the green that read 150 to the front and 185 to the back. I don't hit a big driver, but it seemed extra short out there. I still managed to post a 90, which isn't bad for a 15hcp. 

 

So in summary: 

Green course is awesome. Don't try to walk it.

Yes, Golden Horseshoe is a nice facility, and yeah, I wouldn't try to walk either of those courses (and I'm someone who walks fairly often). Was there in April for a tournament, and at that time they had just punched the Green course (very very bumpy) but the Gold was in great shape. I think the conditions probably played into your ratings - because everyone I know would rate the Gold way better than the Green.

You learned a good lesson.  Always ride a strange course first. Then after seeing it if you're still intent on walking the next round go ahead.  You're lucky you didn't play the Gold - it's even hillier than the Green.
