Honma TR20v reviews — Let’s hear em!

Recommended Posts

Looking for a little more info from any of you tr20v iron players.  I signed up for the Honma mobile fitting experience next week.  It seems like an awesome thing they are doing.

I hit the 747v irons and absolutely loved them.  Have yet to hit the tr20v, so I’m very intrigued to say the least.  They did change the sole design on the new ones, so I’m really interested to hear if anyone has played both?  If so, how has your experience been transitioning into the tr20’s?  Also, any general feedback on the tr20v’s would be greatly appreciated.  Hard to find in depth info on any long term experiences with these guys.  They make a beautiful club!  TIA!

Wow... not one review huh? 😂

I mean, I know they are not incredibly popular but I though at least a couple of good folks would chime in...haha

Anyone take part in the mobile fitting experience?  Curious to hear about that as well.  I will make sure to report back afterwards if anyone is interested.

I randomly hit them when I was testing out some shafts for my current irons. They felt amazing. I had no interest in changing irons, but they felt so good I had to think about it!

I was also super surprised that they were pretty long for me. The size of the iron made me think it would be short than my Srixons but they were pretty equal if not a touch longer. I ended up grabbing a set of TR20P from ebay - kind of hoping they feel somewhere close to the V's, because I'd love a bit of extra forgiveness. If they're as good as I hope, they'll probably be my backup set.

Hopefully some other people can chime in!

Yeah, they feel pretty amazing.  Although my experience has only been with 747v.  Really curious to do this fitting this week and see how it goes.  It will be outside on grass which will be a great test to see how the some works for me.

I did a Honma fitting earlier this year. The TR20V were...fine, I thought. They felt pretty good, flew well, but did not really wow me in any way. I was looking at a combo set of TR20B and TR20B, and from my standpoint the TR20V's were a little bit thicker than I'd like. However, I did like them better than the TR20B, which I thought looked fantastic but I was not especially consistent. Turf interaction on both was pretty good for me.

One thing to note is the lofts are pretty strong on TR20V vs. other player's cavity backs. Not necessarily and issue and can obviously be adjusted, but good to know for your fitting. I also unfortunately struggled a little bit with the shaft offerings available in the Honma van, which was not quite as extensive as what you'd get from Titleist, Callaway, et. al. The shafts that have been best for me in other fittings (OG PX, DG 120) were not available to test.

Just realized I never came back to this thread.

Ended up purchasing the tr20v 6-pw, tr20p 5i, tr21x 4i with vizard 100x, 48 i sole bent to 49.5 and a 54.

Needless to say, I came away very impressed with these irons.  Some of the best feeling irons I’ve tested.  So solid!

So far I’ve only had the chance to play 9 holes and a couple of range sessions.  Taking them in for a loft and lie check later this week.

Funny, as I started researching…that is the exact combo I picked our for myself.

I really can’t say enough how good these wedges are.  The irons look and feel fantastic, but the wedges are just so understated.  Really nice compact look at address and have this heavy, dense feel at impact on full shots.  Not overly soft, just super solid.  Spin as good as anything I’ve played.

I had a 50 yard pitch shot into the green running slightly away and to the left, pin tucked in the back.  Was able to have the confidence to hit a low pitch with some speed and it took one hop and stopped just passed it.  Have not had that kind of confidence in a that shot in a long time.

Anyone else gaming these gems and loving them like me?

I'm playing the P's but yes overall Honma makes fantastic irons that a lot of better players would like in the P and V lines - they just have to try them.

Even with the stronger lofts, I found they launched in a really good window.  I had mine weakened a touch.  Very solid feeling irons.  Hard to describe.  They feel soft but very solid at the same time.  The 8-p remind me of apex pro double dots.

@third-times-a-charm and others - would I benefit from trying the P in my 5 & 6 iron?  What's the experience with user friendliness between P/V?  Thanks.

You may - it all depends on your preferences and what you're seeing from your shots. If you lose distance in those irons and need slightly more forgiveness and spin than they may help out with that in those lower irons.

I use a TW-X in my 4 iron. The TR20P is a great 4i, but the TW-X with a graphite shaft is just point and shoot.

I had the P in the 5 and TW-X in the 4 as well.  The P has plenty of pop.  But the TW-X is a different animal.

Oh man, thanks guys.  ProClubs is offering the 3, 4, 5 TW-X irons with my shaft for $160.  Seems like a no brainer.

I do want to hit the "P" in a long iron but it's harder to find...

I have a TR20P 4i I would consider letting go of if anyone needs just that one.

Yeah the proclubs TW-X deal right now is insane. Thats where I grabbed the 4i from for like $60.

Or you can go all in on with the TW-X 🙂 I use 5-11. Best set of irons. Awesome feel with plenty of pop.

My wife uses the full TW-X 5-11 set and she loves it as well.

Bumping this guy…

I ended up moving away from my set last year and have since missed them.  Cycled through a bunch of irons without finding anything to stick.  I’m officially going back to my tr20 combo set and could not be more excited about it.

Super happy with my 0311Ps but 'tis the time to tinker.  The issue I had with the TR20V was that they were clicky feeling.  Feel is super subjective and I know some people might find them to be super soft.  Shaft has a ton to do with that.  I also think they come stock with super light shafts and might want to try something heaver but with more whip.  Curious based on the rest of your bag if you'll go with Modus S/X or something else?

I actually don’t find them to be super soft.  Not like Mizuno or Srixon.  They feel closer to Miura.  More solid than soft.  Kind of a unique feel.

I have a set of dg 120 tour issue s400 shafts that I’ll put in them.  They have modus 120x, but I’m trying to move away from modus.  The softer handle in modus was giving me slower ball speeds.  Love the feel and weight of the dg 120, so giving them a shot this time around.

I tested them against my Callaway Apex 19 irons and they performed about the same, the TR20Vs felt a little more solid like a one piece forging although the Apex 19s also felt solid.  Lofts and length are nearly identical.  I decided to go with the TR20V, got mine with TR20 65 graphite shafts from Golf Partner USA which is a Japan based used club seller in great condition for a great deal so they are Made in Sakata Japan.
