Do your greens have hazards?

Recommended Posts

Please believe I love my club, but it makes me laugh, too. Here is the cart I used almost always. It was the first cart I used my first round here last summer and it's the only one that's run consistently since. We do have 4 carts now. 🤣

The only hazard I see is the big nasty patch in the front part.  I believe that's good for relief.  Greens look pretty beat up.

Overall the greens look pretty good. There are a few spots on some, this is one of the worst. But it is a nice place.

I'm confused by the question.   Are you asking us if where we play is dumpy?

It isn't dumpy, it's cost effective.

The 9th has some dry spots, but isn't bad overall.

Where is it? I wish I could play it!
I’ve played some elite courses but the most fun I ever had was a down on the heels muni with a quirky layout and small, crazy greens.
Enjoy what you have! It looks scenic and relaxed. My kind of place!

Weird thread.......asking if greens have hazards and then a post about a cart.

Oh well, it's GolfWRX and I've read things that make less sense.

It's a fun 9 holes. I was still the only one there when I finished today. There are about 25 members and probably a dozen or so locals who play it. You can only fit about a dozen cars in the lot, so it's not like it gets crazy busy. It's along the river and out of the way.

I was told it was built by the timber company for the guys who worked the mill in the 20's. I'm sure I'll get the full story eventually. I've only been a member since September.

<edit> it's self check in when the shop isn't open. Put your money in an envelope and put it in the mail slot. The keys are in the carts, just grab and go.

I have played a course that had a green with a hazard on it: Shimonoseki Golden, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, designed by Jack Nicklaus.

The first hole had a bunker in the front centre of the green. Not in front of the green, but actually in the green. I can't find a picture of it, but here's a diagram I found online.

That's what I thought this post was about initially also.  One of the courses on Daufuskie Island in South Carolina that I played had a bunker in the middle of the 18th green also and that was the first time I had ever seen that before and I have never seen it again anywhere else.  That would kind of suck hit the green...but not hit the green!!

And what if you hit the green, but your way to the hole is blocked by the bunker? In that case, I'd prefer to be in the bunker.

I haven't played Shimonoseki Golden in years, but I seem to recall a sign warning players not to use their wedges on the green.

We have one green where the front 20 feet of the entire green is a hazard. If you are above the hole and your ball gets onto that false front it costs you a stroke (at least). The ball won't stop rolling until it rolls 40 yards back down the fairway.

They sometimes cut the hole just a couple feet above the false front and we'll deliberately lag our first putts to end up above the hole then have to make a 2-3 foot downhiller for par. Better than taking a chance on the "hazard".

Your "course manager"..

You mean the owner? Not sure there is a course management established here. The "greens crew" is a few guys, at least 2 I know of, but that's about it.

I heard he won the club in a divorce. My guess is the property is long since paid for and it's basically staying afloat. I would be surprised if there were more than a few dozen folks who play here.

I enjoy it and will likely stay a member for a while. I only paid $700 because I don't live in town, I'm 30 minutes out. I could join Rock Creek County Club for a only a little more ($880/year), but they require collard shirts and no denim. I can bring my dog with me here and like my jeans.

There's a public course in a nearby town that went through a really bad patch ten years ago. The owner and his wife split up and there was some dispute about who would keep the golf course. Story I heard was the guy got the course and the wife got everything else. House, cars, all the money. So he lived in his office in the clubhouse for a while and the course maintenance and staffing budget was basically zero. They're back to have a (somewhat) playable course nowadays or so I hear. But for a while it was basically the owner mowing the greens every day and the fairways once a week and that was it. Kind of heroic effort, really.

That doesn't sound far off. The course itself isn't bad, but a few of the greens need effort. He was talking about changing a couple holes and putting in a driving range, but I'm still not clear where that would go

If you look at the courses Facebook page, they used to have a staffed kitchen with dinners served. But it hasn't been updated in 3 years, so I'm guessing that's "before times".

There was a course here in town that I never played. It closed a few years ago when the city rejected the idea of adding an RV park to the property.

If you aren't a member, the course is $9 for 9 holes +$6 for a power cart, $2 for pull. I am a cheap bastxxx, but even I think it's totally worth a buck a hole.

I have some very nice courses around, but they are much more. If I want a challenge, I can play Pumpkin Ridge, but I'd have to put on a shirt first. 🤣

True...if I remember correctly on one side of the of the bunker allowed you to putt around it and it was a pretty small bunker. and pretty shallow.

That’s not a deal at $750 per year. The place looks like a dump but if you’re happy, so be it. (But it is what it is no matter how much you like it. A dump is a dump.)

Some people are quite happy living in trailer parks. Live and let live.

While it might not be manicured, I wouldn't call it a dump. And playing a solo round when you are the only one there makes it worth the cost.

I mean, my Corvette doesn't look THAT out if place there. 🤣

That’s a good point. At a place like this, I wouldn’t be surprised when the nicest car in the lot is a Corvette.

Someone didn’t read the post or thread 🤣

OP, there’s a few 9 hole places like this near me. I grew up playing places like this, they are my bread and butter.

The one I play somewhat often is $12 for a weekend walk, but I will say the greens are true. Its $500 for a membership which isn’t bad.

Yeah, me too. When I started, there were a bunch of them around for quality ghetto golf.

This was my home course in college. The front doesn't have water or sand. The back has the river and a pond.
