Are we feeling rory this week? 7,700 yards...won at quail hollow which is similar length.  Maybe he just pulls the bryson strategy an bombs all week as the long rough gives an advantage to the bombers

US Open will be played around 7,300 yards this week. Shorter than in '08.

Going to go out on a limb here and say Phil will not even be a factor....makes cut on the number.

I agree. I don't see him as a factor this week. Most of his success at Torrey came before the redo.

He caught his lightning in a bottle at Kiawah.

I volunteered there today.  The logistics to run one of these events is amazing.  But in 2008, there were 40,000 people each day, this year 8,500. And only 1,100 volunteers vs 6,500, so the even is scaled back considerably from that standpoint.  But despite a course which is only so-so to many people, location, location and location is prime as will be the weather and it sets up well for the USGA to cash in which they need because it is the only event they hold that makes money.  I think it will be good show.  Not many players out this morning with the top group easily Spieth, Thomas, Homa and Xander.  As I was leaving I saw Westwood walking down #1.  He is one of 14 players returning who also played at Torrey in 2008.  Don't know the others.

I would bet BDC will put too much pressure on his long game and will not contend.  Never know but sometimes insane length isn't what wins majors.  He seems to have some issues as of late with majors and galleries.

I read that last year he adopted a strategy to hit driver low so that if it went in the rough, it did not go to the bottom.  Impossible to say how much that may have helped, but it's not a bad idea.

I felt like they could (still) play out of the rough at Kiawah.  Not sure if that will be the case here although the course playing shorter is also interesting.

Hope he has a chance on Sunday but I wouldn't bet a lot on it.

So I don't know if anyone else agrees with me, but I really enjoyed watching the US Open at Winged Foot last fall (Sunday was kind of a snooze fest but I'll elaborate). I personally prefer the US Open venues on the East Coast over the West Coast, because those courses seem to be tougher and have had some of the best US Open finishes in the last 20 years. I think it would be pretty sweet if they had a US Open rota of 7-8 courses and just went between them.

Exactly, the rough at Kiawah was nowhere near as bad as Torrey. Phil also led the field with 22 birdies. There is no chance in hell anyone makes 22 birdies this week. Also Phil has only finished top 20 twice at Torrey going back to 2011. The dude doesn't like this course. The only way Phil will ever win a US Open is if the USGA decides to hold it in April at Augusta

If I had to speculate I would say Phil does not like the revised course because it is harder to save par when short siding yourself which takes away a big advantage for him.

As for the course being worthy of an open I have been to 3 as a spectator; this course, pebble beach and oakmont. In every case the usga transforms the course so much it is only that course in name only. They continually tinker with the design to protect par as the winning score. They ruin more of these events than they enhance. Can’t wait for Davis to leave.

the marine layer will likely save the greens just like in 08.  I expect a     Player who can putt on bumpy poa will win, most likely a Californian.

-1 was the winning score at Torrey Pines in 2008. That's 283. That's the 2nd highest total to win a US Open since after Pebble Beach in 2010 (284)

The west coast courses are pretty dang hard too.

The finish at Torrey Pines is by a mile and half one of the two most memorable US Open in the last 20+ years. It's 1A and 1B with 2006 at Winged Foot for remarkably different reasons.

Westwood was the only player with a real chance to win.

Most forgotten part about Phil's week - he finished 7 out of the playoff. He took a 9 on 13 hitting wedge from the fairway on Saturday. Tiger Woods made 3 that day.

2008 was pretty awesome, but my favorites were the 2006/7 US Open where the winning score was +5 (+11 was top 10 in 2007). It was so fun watching the best golfers in the world throw up all over the course and struggle. I know the USGA would probably get flamed by the players for another setup like that but that would be pretty sweet.

IIRC Phil played at least a few rounds without a driver as well...

Watched the epic dual between Woods / Mediate last night. I hope Torrey Pines this week can provide us with another showdown like that 13 years on.

I'm backing Robert MacIntyre this week, think he might do something special and also secure a Ryder Cup spot.

Faxon was on XM92 this morning and said a few interesting things.

1) players and caddies he talked to yesterday said that the greens for a Monday were as hard as they ever remember for a Monday practice round.

2) the rough wasn't as bad as they thought it was going to be down the fairways, but really bad around the greens.

3) Rory is working on controlling his spin and lowing her traj on shorter irons.

4) Bryson's agent told the USGA that they're not interested in a Brooks/Bryson pairing for the first 2 days.
