When the USGA gives a special exemption it is keyed to the individual's DNA.  Once Phil no longer needed it, he couldn't pass it to someone else unless he had a twin.

I’ll go out in the limb and take Xander now. Somehow I have a feeling he’s going to break through.  Perfect place to do it.  Forgettable course , but he’s played it enough to remember  which hole is which.

Will do for sure.  I’ve watched a million rounds on that course .... probably seen the 08 open in full 10 times.  And I can name #1 and #18.  And I’m not sure I can name #1 if it’s a blind test from the tee box view.  Just one of my least favorite  us open venues.  Pebble is x10 better.

Agree about pebble! Just a sucker for an ocean course in general. My current avatar is a clue! Haha

Oh I agree. I’m sure the views are great. I just for whatever reason cannot get the course layout.   And it bugs me because I’m the type that has a photographic memory and can play back shot by shot with lies snd yardages off a round in my head days later.  But that course and whistling straights I cannot recall a single detail about.

Hey, to each his own! For me the breathing views of the Pacific overshadow any of that courses short comings. Same basic layout in the middle of Nebraska… Pass 😂

Wonder why there is not many articles on golfwrx about the US Open. No practice round pictures and news about different things going on there. Usually every major has quite a few pre-tournament articles.

I'm lucky enough to have been given access the last two days thru some old business connections.  Spent about 3 hours there yesterday and a little under 3 hours this morning early.

 

I will agree that other than being a course with ocean views, I don't think Torrey is anything more special than thousands of other courses in the US as far as the property or hole layout goes...

 

People are just in awe due to the PGA stop and the hype it stimulates in their brain...

Yes he can.  And read up on how he learned the game.  Want to say his parents had to drive him 7 hours(could be a few less, but it wasn't around the corner) every weekend to be able to play.

Did a flag count of the field, excepting USA: England (not UK) 14, RSA 9, OZ 7, and Kor, Japan and Can 4 each.

Don't find any Thai players this year, but many new flags in sight; eg Poland.

Yeah it’s crazy how gambling used to be considered sort of a back room, shady, faux pas type of event and now the media shoves it down your throat like something that you are supposed to be doing.

We had two quite nice courses at Purdue, only minutes drive away from all the corn you can stand. I do remember the motto... "There's more than corn in Indiana!"

 

(There's soybeans too.)

Friends daughter is at Purdue. She called home and asked her mom if she could send her ski goggles. The mom said “oh, where are you going to go skiing?” The daughter said “I’m not, I need them to walk from my dorm room to class!” 😂 So yeah, SoCal 😉

California covid rules . Or USga covid rules. Not sure which. But one or the other won’t allow media inside contact to be able to take close up in hand pics. It was asked ( why no pics ) and answered as this in the prerelease section by someone else.

All (most) of the Covid restrictions ended yesterday here in CA. So guessing if there are any restrictions, it’s the USGA.

Maybe so.  I just recall the same thing last year at the pga at Harding park.  So really wasn’t sure. But when the guy asked the question “ why no pics “ his thread got locked and a mod ( or easyyy can’t remember ) answers “ they won’t allow any access to take pics this week so we didn’t go “ ( paraphrasing). Same basic answer from the other California events as I recall. But could be the USga for sure.

California has tons of awesome golf courses... I mean, no offense to Torrey, but surely an Open at Monterey Peninsula Country Club would surely be better place for golf. 

 

Imagine an US Open at Bandon Dunes? Now that would be hard as heck...

It's not about the course but the experiences and event itself.  The playing field is level.  If the players hate the course, stop whining!  Fans don't matter.

 

Adam Scott: "I was the third wheel hanging off the back! Every time I come back (to Torrey Pines) I’m reminded of it. It’s a strong, strong memory. The atmosphere for the whole 36 holes I played with Phil and Tiger was incredible, but Thursday morning the energy around the first hole was like… I can’t compare it to anything else. "  THAT is what matters.

Most golf courses need to be seen in person to really appreciate the holes...just ask anyone whose been to the Masters.

 

Heard so often that the cameras don’t do the slopes at Augusta justice that I think I would need to be confronted with something Himalaya like to be surprised at how hilly it was 😂

Like anyone else, once corporations/taxes are involved, everything seems a lot cleaning activity.
