Man, I was rooting for Louie...the drive on 17 into the hazard was tough to see.

You say he didn’t choke but go on to say he made mental mistakes and lost patience. Aren’t those elements of a choke?

Id say missing an easy uphill 4 footer that he should make in his sleep, on the back nine, being one shot back, at a major is a major choke job.

Put it this way. If he missed that *exact same putt on 18 to lose the tourney

Would you say that was a choke?

The current trend is with a mallet type putter like a TM Spider.  While this is a terrific putter and this style works for many, I believe it is not a cure all for all golfers.  Rory’s past performance with a blade, notedly with his 009, produced very reliable putting.  I would like to see Rory go back to that 009 and see what would happen.

Watching the golf with my dad yesterday he made a decent observation on Rory's putting (as well as DJ, Colin, Wolff to an extent) is that none of these Taylormade players seem to be terribly consistent or even good putters and they all use a Taylormade putter. He wondered if maybe it could be the equipment. Morikawa seemed to be a really decent putter with the longneck Betti.

I think back to the 009/006 run Rory had and the Dave Stockton method of putting and remember it being quite successful. I also remember the 2016 East Lake tournament with the Scotty mallet coming from the Odyssey Works 3 prototype he was using and his move to the TP line of putters with the move to Taylormade in 2017. Perhaps it actually is the equipment.

Nothing beats the metaphor I heard one of the American golf essayists come out with when recounting the Mediate v Woods battle of 2008.

'It's Buster Douglas versus Mike Tyson. It's the Falkland Islands versus England...'

Not "best of the field" isn't "can't putt much worse".

But you already know that. :classic_wink:

Ok. Who was worst.  Stats have to be digested  with relevance.  Especially strokes gained.

Weird....I get the Falklands thing, but Buster Douglas (Rocco) did beat Tyson.

True. He does ride the emotional highs and lows to their peaks.

but putting plays into this too.  If he could just learn to let them go no matter the outcome.  Let it go and execute the next.  Cant put much worse really. He has to have lost 4-5 shots to the best putter in the field yesterday.

I don't like the idea of him seeing Faxon for tips.   Faxon was a good putter, but he never putted like a winner.  His record shows that.  Fax is a chop in terms of total talent compared to Rory.

If he wants to putt like a winner - I suggest he calls Ben, Jack or Tiger and asks for a 20-25 minute meeting (not on the green).  Rory is making putting a separate destination over 72 holes.  These three guys knew that making putts was just the end of finishing a hole successfully and moving to the next.

I keep replaying the putts Rahm made on #17 & #18. Those were nasty: big breaking left to righters. Making one of them would have been huge, making both to win the US Open by a shot is absolutely epic! Anyone know the length of them? I thought they were both 20ish feet or a little shorter.

That's how you win a US Open. I hope some other guys who were in contention take note.

usopen.com has the one on 17 at 24'4", the one on 18 at 18'1"

All I know is I wouldn't want to make Johnny MIller's 'swimming pool' comment in 2021. Not unless I wanted to retire from TV work, anyway.

For a player of Rory’s stature, he choked big time.

He was at -4 after 10.

Then, he hits the middle of the green on 11. Lags to like 3 feet….putt misses the hole. Completely.

Ok, he’s still at -3, still right there on 12. He drives it into the bunker but in a good lie. 200 yard to the green but the pin is right in the middle. Totally misses the green and puts it in the bunker, terrible leave, double.

So now he’s -1, but birdies 13, back to -2, then bogeys 16.

Im thinking it’s a choke on the back 9 on Sunday at a major. Had he been in the lead, there would have been no question.

Rahm was grinding, bearing down, keeping his card clean (just one bogey) and scoring with clutch putts.

Even Louis managed to shoot par.

If we don’t say Rory choked then we have to say, dang, he’s just not an elite player anymore.

Rory has become a golden journeyman, and he is not a factor in Majors since St Andrews, where instead of defending his Open title at the Home of Golf he preferred to play soccer with his buddies and broke his leg. He has retired ever since from the tournaments that matter. He wins some regular tournaments (big and small) here and there because he is arguably the greatest player of his generation, but he is just ok where he is in life. Not all players are like Tiger, robots programmed to win majors and break records.

This said, I love Rory and would love to see him succeed and win the Green Jacket but it won't happen. When everyone wants to see him play good he doesn't show up (quadruple bogey at your home club on the first hole of the Open? Come on man...). Remember when everyone was waiting for the best Sunday ever when Rory and Tiger were paired at East Lake? And what we got? A snoozefest. That's fit Rory, unfortunately.

God I miss fat Rory.

Kudos to you. 👍

It's not very often a hater admits to the incredibly high bar the hatee has established for himself.

I surely agree he wasn't quite as good as he should(?) have been but,,,,,,,,,,,,, T4 with a 2 under 69 in the final round of a major and he was "pathetic". hysterical.gif

Lol. Yeah Brooks has certainly established that bar

I don’t know either.  Could parse it out to “ people in touch with the lead on Sunday “.  Say guys who started -1 or better.    That’s he main failure of strokes gained , it has no way to show clutch stats vs not.  No pressure accounting.

at any rate his yearly stats say it all. Nobody will look at his short putting and think he’s a good putter.  Not even him.  I love the guy.  Most talent on tour probably. Which is why it’s so frustrating to watch.

Love Rory. I’ll still root for him. His comments after the round were positive.

I think there was a time when Rory was consumed with winning and proving he was the best.

But now, he decided he’s not going to attach his mental well being to winning.

I respect that. Just as a fan, you want to see him destroy courses and fields again, it’s awesome.

Did any of the say top 20 on the leaderboard hit into that pond on 18?

I get it forces a decision after a bad drive but is that thing really in play?

Don't think so.

But with the pin up front ? Of course it's in play - if they want to have a reasonable chance at eagle. If not, no.

They were yelling for John Rahm to jump in there, like they do at the ANA Inspiration .

yeah and it looked like a good 6 inches, or more like 1 foot between the ball and the path.

but there have been some concrete within the grass that we can’t see

I guess if you think Louis is 5'2" you also think that ball was a foot from the path and Bryson was driving it 650 yards.  It's like the new math.

Exactly, and I’m thinking TW and Jack tell him the same thing.

Same prep and attitude for every putt

Go out and hit putts after lunch every day. And don’t stop until it’s dinner time ; )

I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
