What are the protocols during practice rounds on Tour?

Watching Live From the US Open and Phil and Bryson are on 12 and 13 and have probably spent 20 minutes on each green chipping, putting to different areas of the green, etc.

What are the protocols for practice rounds?  Do guys just go wherever they want, have a certain amount of time on each hole, etc?  I'd imagine with 140+ guys in the field all wanting to get things dialed in, it could become quite annoying if the group in front of you is spending 20 minutes on the green.

You have until (usually) 8am to tee off the back so that you don’t jump ahead of the guys who tee off early on 1.

no time limits on holes but they’re aware of who may be behind them so players don’t really hold up others behind them (some players are slower and want to hit a ton of putts/chips).

what you saw was likely that 3 ball having a few holes open behind them.

the worst is waiting on a money game 4 ball when you’re like a 2 some

ill also add

lpga has tee times

euro tour you have a limited amount of shots (chips:putts) you can hit per hole. Nobody is really counting them but if you’re taking forever you’re likely going to get called out by the guys behind you

How long are you guys actually on the course for a typical practice round? Not counting practice tee time, just on the course itself.

Are those guys pretty realistic with what could happen during any given round regarding where they may have to approach from or is everything "planned" or best case?

By that I mean, do guys go, "I have a tendency to hook the ball off the tee. I might have to play from the left of the fairway, I better slide over that way and see what it looks like to approach from here."  Or is everything based upon whatever they actually hit off the tee in that practice round?  I drive it right, I play my next shot from there and that is all I get to see?  How much contingency planning goes on?

Scary isn’t it that the practice rounds take longer than the tournament rounds.

It really depends on who is in front of you. Some practice rounds take 6 hours, mostly depending on if it’s a new course on the schedule.

Today in Wichita we played 9 holes in about 2 hours and that’s with nobody in front of us. We’ve been here 3 years in a row so there’s not too much to go through that we don’t already know about the course

Most of it is best case scenario. If we hit a squirly one well just toss one in the fairway to where we expect to be.

Depending on the rough well also hit a few out of there from the tee shots. Depending on the wind and firmness of the golf course we may also hit less than driver to see where it ends up.

On and around the greens is where most players spend their time. Lots of chips out of the rough if it’s thicker than normal. Lots of bunker shots if there’s some that aren’t terrible to be in from the approach shots (likely into par 5s).

i used to love watching tiger and Steve Williams putt and chip over and over again to a [seemingly] random placed tee from every conceivable spot…sand, gathering area and every manner of putting locale…

they are given a general idea of where the pins will be but when u have played Torrey and won a gazillion times u get to know the “general’ idea..

It was very cool….

he did the same at Firestone…most other haunts he did the usual putting and chipping to a spot…

also, no one ever called out tiger or jack for being meticulous….nor did they ever call out Gretzky or Jordan for the same relative behaviors…

goats are goats…let them be 🙂
