Scotty Detour 2.5

What is the process of converting them? Ive seen some online and pop up here. Is it easy? Does it make them desirable? Is it a waste? Any info would be great. Thank you

You're essentially removing the existing weight and insert piece with a custom made one of the material of your choice. 

 

Is it easy? Depends, do you have access to a machine shop and tools or know someone who does?

 

Does it make them more desirable? Yes. Is it a waste? Maybe. The big thing was back in the day everyone thought they were fugly and no one wanted them, prices tanked when regular Newports didn't. You used to be able to buy a detour for pennies, spend some cash on a refinish and insert and have essentially a brand new putter for a lot less than a new Newport. But now that it's more commonplace, the Newport detours have become more sought after, there's less of a deal in it now then there once was. 

 

Also worth noting, once you remove that insert you lose the ability to adjust weight. If you're very particular about head weight you'll have to be conscious of the new insert material and weight, otherwise you'll just have to lead tape it.

Not necessarily, you don't need a machine shop unless you want the same mill on the putter and the insert. Otherwise it's two screws and the pre-made insert and white or black silicone. It brings the head to 340g with the copper insert. If you want a heavier head then yes lead tape is the biggest answer. The big plus is a custom looking button back style newport with no sight line if that's what you're looking for. But its essentially turns into the same limited release teryllium putter. I'll put below. Done right and you'll have a one of a kind putter.

Have you done the process? Is this yours? What would be a good price to be into the detour PRE conversion? 250$?

Yeah It's mine. it was done by norcalputters. I bought a super beat up one cheap off ebay and sent it to him. he cleaned it up and put the insert on and added the engraved crown. You can buy the insert directly from spryevo if you find a nice detour that doesn't need refinishing.

Totally worth it to me. You never see a newport 2 without a sight line unless it's a 4,000 circle T

My buddy has the NP2 & NP2.5, converted both and are great options. If you haven’t seen them in person, the overall blade is longer than usual with a shallow face. Not ideal to my eye but still great looking putters for essentially a custom Scotty.

This is an awesome looking putter. Great idea!

Modified can look cool but these putters are extremely light before removal of the weight and you’re going to end up w the lightest putter imaginable and for that reason I’m out. I added 16gr to mine instead versus losing almost 80gr.

Mine Is 340g after refinishing

I’ve done it five times with Embrace Putters copper inserts and BOS Golf doing the work. See this thread.

Not much to it, just 2 screws. You can go crazy fixing it up. The insert + the putter is pretty much more than the cost of a used putter, depending on the model. The real fuss is over the sight line.
