After Watching Rahm's Swing I Integrated Elements

Recommended Posts

I'm work in a technical field and am a geek, especially when it comes to the golf swing. My swing has morphed a lot over the past three years. My scores, in the process, have dropped about 13 strokes. I noticed via studying videos of my swing recently that a really full turn (I'm capable of a pretty full turn for my age) I get movements I don't like. So, started working with a golf fitness trainer and that has helped. At the 2018 US Open I stood next to Rahm on the last day (he was paired with Henrik, who was kind enough to chat with my boy) and I've always admired Rahm's swing. He and I are built very similar, too. I studied my swing video next to Rahms and saw a few things I really like with his swing. The shorter backswing is pretty obvious at first glance. But, I love how his hands drop down coming down and I also noticed a very one-piece takeaway (which is something I used to do and missed) and - perhaps the most subtle thing - I love the athletic movement Rahm uses with his arms on the downswing. There's a certain level of precision with it that looks great. I have usually just had my arms along for the ride. So, I decided to alter my setup and swing based on the elements I saw the try it out. Early in it is pretty promising. Getting great impact on the ball - certainly more center-of-face impacts. Went through the bag with it and liked the results throughout. It's less painful on my body (54, beat up from football). I also know that Rahm still generates a tremendous separation in his torso and I have been working on that a lot over the past year luckily. Will try to post a video sometime on this.

Interested in other's similar stories of seeing things in a certain PGA player's swing and integrating them. I imagine it happens a lot. Thanks in advance for geeking out with me.

Rham's swing is a thing of beauty..... it looks original too.  He's got that kind of swing that looks tight and compact and therefore dependable, meaning he will hit it where he aims and so should be a top 5 player for a long time.

Post a video, 13 strokes is a lot a lot.... well played! 13 more strokes and you'll break 90 hahaha

What is torso separation? And if good, how to get it?

As I understand it: It's the difference in the angles of turn achieved between the shoulders and hips. While Rahm's takaway looks very short, he has a lot of twist in that barrel. His leg work is really nice, too.

The fact that Rahm is tall and very strong allows him to still crush it with less than optimal mechanics for swing speed.  Although guys like him and Finau have short looking swings (for their body), the effective length of their swings (hand path) could be comparable to someone shorter like Rory, who maxes out his hand path for his height.  Even if swinging shorter isn't the most optimal speed wise, if it's helping you find the center of the face than that's most important.
