Going back to Apex irons

Striker Ace

Recommended Posts

So I originally got Apex cf16's back when I began my golf journey in 2016. I thought that I needed SGI irons so I traded them in and now I have Big Bertha B21's with a lighter shaft. However, I am struggling with these more often than I ever did with the Apex. I had an Apex 19 approach wedge laying around that I purchased individually with the heavier 105 gram shaft and I thought what the heck I'll add it to the bag and give it a try this afternoon. Sure enough I hit two beautiful high arching shots onto the greens with it the both times that I used it. I also think that the heavier weighted shaft feels better?

That CF16 is my favorite of all time. Still have it as my back up set as I hit a little too high now compared to when I got it. Head shape and size is perfect. Offer plenty of forgiveness, soft yet firm.

Did you get the lighter shaft on purpose, or did it come with the irons? The change in shaft weight might be part of it at least.

Shaft weight can be a big deal. Some are more sensitive to weight than flex as it can mess with timing. Other people can swing anything and make it work.

On purpose. I don't have a fast swing speed and I thought it would help with that. There is only a 25 gram difference but the Apex iron just feels better to swing.

Yeah, I get that. I'm sure if you asked someone, I shouldn't be playing the irons I am. But I feel like I play them as well as I would any other and I enjoy hitting them. To me that's what matters.

If you like playing the Apex, get another set, or something similar. My issue is I have been enjoying hitting different clubs. So now I have a list I am working through. 🤣

"Only"?   That's quite a bit.   If I go 10g either way, I notice it.

Yeah, I'm definitely going back to Apex with the C-taper lite shafts at 105g. I think if I work on my swing a little more I will pick up some club head speed regardless of weight. I have to go back to what feels better tempo wise and stick with it. Even if I don't pick up speed it will be worth it to strike the ball better.

Plenty of golfers who don’t swing a lignter shaft any faster than a heavier one, only they hit the lighter one worse because their timing is off. Most likely you would adjust to that, but 25g is a major change and lighter is not always the path to faster.

Apex are not exactly baby blades.  They are very playable by a wide range of skill levels although I had distance control issues with them.  I had a set but traded them in on G400 irons which I liked better and can control better.
