So what caused the tee shots to start collecting left?  Is it the addition length now off the tee ?  When were the trees right added ?  I just don’t get the idea that the hole isn’t being played as designed now.  The smart player is always going to bail right on approach.  4 is a good number.  Sunday evening is The only time anyone would go at a back left pin. So put it there and watch the carnage.

BUt they don't put the pin on the left on Sunday very often.  Even when the pin is front right you see guys playing right of the green.  Players don't want to mess with the trees on the right because, sure you can get lucky, but really you don't want to take the chance.  So you play further left than you would before.

The trees came in about 98 or so.  Possibly a few years later, but they're called Hootiewood apparently, because it happened while Hootie Johnson was in charge of the club and the toonamint.

So a reversal of tiger proofing ?

Do they end up down the left off the tee on 11?  I see more often the miss is right in the trees or the gap beyond the trees.

I don't know who fatpat is but he/she has some quotes on this page > http://www.fatpat.com/software/personal/augusta/hole11.htm < where guys explain why they play down the right.

As I read that I thought the more severe they make the green and the hazards around the green the less tempted they are to play to anywhere but front right on that green.  If your only target is front right on the green, why bother with the left hand side of the fairway at all?  Also, if there is no danger down the right and the play is to grip it and rip a big fade (which most guys are playing now) that is what they are going to do.  There is nothing that prompts or tempts them to the left.  A 'flatter lie" isn't much benefit with a short iron in their hands.

That's a puzzle they would just have to figure out.  The fact that it seems unfair would be the exact reason I would put it up there.  If possible I would maybe try to get the tee up some to put a hair shorter iron in their hands if I had that severe of a hole location.  A tiny olive branch.

(I also love how ANGC stole some shine from the US Open unintentionally.)

That's the best part about Augusta! Every time they do anything it's kind of a big deal. The 2 things that draw the most eyeballs in the golf world are Tiger Woods and Augusta!

That’s what I see too. Lots of guys right.  The guys left i can recall were say jordan Spieth whne he double crossed a cut

The bold play is and was always meant to be up the right hand side.

I remember reading an article years ago which quoted both Seve's and Bernhard Langer's approach to playing this hole.

Langer advocated driving down the left, so that the second shot was played more away from the water. Seve, conversely, always looked to drive it down the right; for a better angle from which to attack the pin.

That was back in the days when the approach was a 6- or 7-iron, though, not the stock long iron out to the right of the last few years.

There are better changes to be made but I do like the tree thinning right of 11, of course maybe they will replant ?

If you want the water more in play on 11, I'd suggest the better move would be to reduce the appeal of the bail out area on the right.

I'm not sure what the best way to do that would be, but right now playing it out to the right and letting it hop down somewhere near the front edge is too appealing for them IMO.

Right. I was thinking that the tree removal could be one of a handful of changes that combine to put more pressure on the approach. The contours and length of cut around the bail out area can certainly be changed.

This is one hole where the club probably has to think about playability for the members as well as the tournament. I bet that bailout area gets a lot of action during member rounds.

Only after he decided that being on the flatter part of the fairway was not worth it.  Maybe being n the flat part matters more with a 4i or 5i in your hand.  Just not so much with a 7i or 8i.
