Chicken wing follow through

Recommended Posts

Ever since I started golf last October, I've been dealing with a chicken wing post impact. There were more severe issues I wanted to get fixed so this was never on the radar, but now it's something I want to tackle.

After every swing, I feel like the club head is swiping across my chest and my lead elbow has no choice but to buckle. So instead of this feeling, I want to get my left arm to be in an extended position for a longer duration post impact. For example like this clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVM5po4d4fY?t=92

I already have a couple of things in mind which I'll try at the next driving range session, including:

1. Hold off on fully extending my trail arm until a later point post impact.

2. Try a few swings with stiff lead arm at point of the impact to see how the rest of my body reacts

Would appreciate any thoughts on this or other swing issues you notice from the clips. Cheers!

the two things I can see is the hips are pretty square at impact when you want them more opened to the target, and your standing up at impact.  I know this is what I am currently fighting / working on with my teacher so I can say what I am working on, but not sure if our causes are the same.

So if the hands are beating the body to the ball you'll most likely flip unless you do some crazy compensation so I work half swing wedges with my body leading the shot no the arms/hands. my thinking is clubhead right, grip left if your more technical or if you're illustrative imagine a pole down the line of the target  and how you would swing into it to knock it down, same idea body a head of the hands for the most power.

As for the stance maybe a bit hunched over which makes it harder to turn, so more hip bend (butt away from ball and less back bend) might allow to body to turn through quicker.

Thanks for your feedback!

I am standing a bit closed to the line of the camera angle since in this video since I was aiming for between a couple of targets at the range but you're right, my hips could definitely use more opening down the line. That's something I've tried to work on but unfortunately right now I just don't have the hip flexibility to disconnect my lower and upper body to that extent. I have extremely tight hip flexors (definitely going to be doing some more yoga lol). I've tried forcing the hips open to the target at impact but all that did was open my chest as well and it just made my whole swing out of sync since the arms were so jammed behind the rest of my body.

As for the standing up, this is an area of debate but I'm aware that I am straightening my legs at impact - which to my understanding is fine as long as:

1) hips are not extending towards the target

2) back is straightening which is causing loss of tilt at impact

I'm definitely open to being correct here but that is my understanding.

You're spot on the hand flip - my swing is very handsy across the impact pocket. I've been trying to tinker around with it to lessen the need for hand/arm movement across the hitting pocket. Still flipping quite a lot and ideally I'd want to lessen this.
