1967 Original Ping Anser Putter

Recommended Posts

I recently re-gripped a centre shafted Slazenger Eaglet. Circa 1976. Rolls the ball beautifully and feels solid. Still break out my Anser 30th anniversay when the modern Ping is on the naughty step. My foursomes partner uses an 1980s model of the B60. Plenty of great old putters around at decent money.

I play a different classic putter each week.

Over the last half dozen weeks I've played the following:

(I putt the same with them all.....)

Bronty, Silver Knight

Edinburgh Golf, Rapier

Spalding, Synchro-Line

Leatham, Hotblade

Dunlop, Arnold Palmer

Spalding, W Model

Like Jiggered I do enjoy experimenting with different vintage putters, most recently with a variety if Golden Gooses.

However, as far as gamers are concerned I had a B60 in the bag for close to 30 years - new in the mid '80's- and didn't expect it to ever leave until eyesight issues made it hard for me to align. Been a Zebra man  for the last 3 or 4 years. 🦓 😁

while there are about a dozen worthy candidates wanting to be played, I seem to rely on the Ping Ansers that were purchased in the early 90's.

have one Stainless and two Bronze, though I prefer the natural dark finish to the painted bronze model.

some nice day this year, one of the vintage flat blade models is coming out for a ride though.

something about leather grips and gooseneck hosels gets me all worked up.

In the market for an Anser2 and Anser 3.

was just looking on the bay at Anser 3's.

they run the gamut from pretty nice to well worn.

only saw a couple painted models and very few undinged dark ones.

my gold one lost some of the shine but it's still like new.

It's always been an den putter.

can still see the price sticker outline on the sole.

accidents happen but if you take care of your gear it will last.

Still three putting with a Ping Anser that looks as above picture.

Won it at a golf outing back in 1993.

I've soaked it periodically in vinegar and salt mix to bring out the "copper" look.

Care to elaborate on the mix? I have 2 Ping Kushins that I'd like to soak.

one (1) cup of Heinz all natural distilled  white vinegar with one (1) tablespoon of Morton salt in a small ziplock bag that fits the putter head.  I leave in sink for thirty (30) minutes and shake bag a few times while soaking.

I have about fifteen putters and they all putt equally well.  In my prime, I used a Bulls Eye Old Standard 33" and I three-putted about once every two rounds on average.  That, to me, is great putting.  Nowadays, I three-putt about once a round, which is not bad.  For me, the make and model of the putter means very little.  As long as the putter (1) is an Anser-style head, (2) the head weighs 330 grams, (3) is standard lie, and (4) has a total length of 33.5", I putt equally well with any of them.  I regularly rotate them and there is no difference in performance.

I had Jim Wells do some custom work to one of my 029s. He milled the face, added tungsten bumper weights, and cut a sightline on the top.

I have used straight catsup on brass Bulls Eyes and it works great.
