Shaft Suggestions - 3-wood

Vroomer99

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Looking for some shaft suggestions for a Sim rocket 3 wood I have on the way.

Currently play an aldila rogue silver 70x, or motore speeder ts vc 7.2.

I have a smoother transition, not very aggressive, and like to be able to feel the shaft well, nothing too boardy.

Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Cheers!

I've had both shafts you mentioned as gamers in driver.  Both are low/low shafts and very linear.  If you want something similar, look into the Ventus Black which is the Motore Speeder TS VC on roids but with just a touch more kick to it.  The TP is also a good tip stiff shaft that plays firm in the mid and butt making it pretty linear as well but with mid launch and low spin.  Great feel for both TP and Ventus Black.

I've found a problem with specialty designed 3-wood-fairway shafts is that they usually have relatively low kick-point (for high launch) and that characteristic may harm the consistency of shot accuracy. For my own game , in the interest of consistent shot accuracy, I prefer a "boardy" shaft. Tipping just about any graphite shaft 1" to 1.5" does help the accuracy of 3-wood shots.

I’d recommend a Tensei AV Blue or a Hzrdus Smoke Blue RDX. Both are great mid/mid shafts with smooth mid sections. As a result you get a nice loading sensation and kick through the ball. The action isn’t significant, just a nice smooth feeling and definitely not boardy.

Thanks for the input, will add to the list of options...

I've definitely been getting a lot of Ventus black suggestions.  Will start to look for one of those I think.

Thanks!

I do understand that idea and feeling, I just cannot feel confident with a swing if I can't feel the shaft.

Appreciate the feedback.

Don’t mistake the shaft for altering launch. It does, but to such a minuscule effect. Loft is what primarily dictates launch.

Seeing DI and Ventus black suggested in the same thread shows how wildly people’s knowledge and personal preference ranges.

Ventus black is a big boy shaft. Stout.

If you’re smooth, you’re way more likely to be suited to a DI/Blueboard/Tensei Blue-type profile - something that has a softer mid section so you can load it, but still has a stiff tip so feels stable.

This is all on paper. If you can, test.

I have been playing the Atmos TS Blue 7 in my 3 wood for the last 2 seasons, I think its a great fairway wood shaft, worth testing. Stronger flight vs IZ shaft.

Depending on head weight, the Hzrdus smoke yellow is another good option, I hit my friends Cally speed 3 wood with the Smoke Yellow 70 and it felt good, nice flight

Fujikura Pro 2.0 Tour Spec -  excellent fairway wood shaft that is still "soft" enough to hit the right launch window from the fairway wood, and "strong" enough to be excellent off the tee.  It replaced the AD/DI in a 3W for me.

Thank you for that suggestion, will add to the list to try!

Good to know.  Just got a smoke yellow to try out, will see how it goes.

That is what I think about the Ventus black too.

I do hit the ball very high, so would likely try out the lower launching shafts, but will definitely keep an eye out for your suggestions to try too.

Thanks!

Check out the thread on the Ventus Black to Red. Red has a stiff handle like the Black but the Red has a more active tip. Players are getting great results tipping the Red 1.5 ior even 1.75 inches to make it play more like the Black, only easier to load.

Gotta agreed on the Ventus line as a whole! I didn’t think anything could kick my trusty GD Tour AD DI’s out of the bag but Ventus blue in my SIM products just work insanely well. At minimum give the Ventus line a demo.

Big fan of the Diamana ZF. I don't love the feeling of soft handles, so something like a AD/DI usually doesn't work for me. But I also can't stand any feeling of flex in the tip. For years I'd just played very stiff, linear wood shafts as I'd rather loose feel than confidence based on a loose feeling butt or tip section. The ZF has a very defined load/unload but a very stable butt/tip as well. I've since switched my fairway shafts to a heavily tipped blueboard (kai'll) which accomplished much of the same.

  • 1 year later...

Just ran across this thread.  Idea's for some higher launching 3W shafts? Had Mav SZ 3W with DI-7 for a few years.  Great off the tee until the end, but began to struggle from the fairway.  Figured at 61, little slower swing, maybe the SZ 3W is not for me anymore.  Unloaded it.  Picked up a reg Mav 3W with Rogue 130 MSI S (got it cheap).  Better, little higher off fairway, but just do not care for the shaft.  And would like to get a little more height.  I did like the feel of the DI-7 in my 3W and figured the problem was the SZ head. (Probably should put the DI in the reg Mav 3W to test before unloading).  BTW, I hit the Mav SZ driver with DI-6 and recently have been to a PXG fitting and the local PGA store several times to test the 425, Stealth, Cobra, all with various shafts, but so far nothing has bested my current driver.  Thanks in advance for some suggestions.

I have the atmos tour spec in black (which to my knowledge is basically the previous version of ventus black.) Thing is nasty. Not sure why it never got big. Pretty easy to get cheap now.

Diamana RF, BF or TB.  They will launch either the same or slightly higher than the DI however they will spin a bit more from my numbers.  If you wanna stay in the AD family, the IZ would be a great option that launches just a little higher but feel firmer with more stability IMO.

It's not.  Ventus Black is a bit smoother, more stable and feels stiffer overall than the Atmos Black IMO.  I would say that the VB's predecessor would the Motore Speeder VC TS.
