What’s your best club?

Simple. What’s the single club you rely on most? Not necessarily the one you use the most, could be the one that you need score. Give details: OEM, model, specs, shaft, etc. Why is it so good?

For me, I can’t decide between these two:

1. Ping G400 4Hy 22° Aldila NV 2KXV Green 85H: reliable tee club, rescue, approaches, probably could use around the green or to putt if I needed to.

2. Cleveland RTX Zipcore SW 56.10 DG Spinner (stock): tested for WRX last year and never left the bag, really upped my sand game, gets me home on almost every hole I play.

SM8 54° S Grind - PX LZ 6.5

Historically, I’ve been a really terrible wedge player inside 100yds for a 6 handicap. Not sure if my swing and this grind just fit well together, but I’ve been throwing darts on anything 110 or closer. It was always gutting being inside 100 yards on a par 4 and making bogey.

Nice! I always liked the S grind.  (K grind…different story.)

Interesting to see a couple of "S-Grind" references. My SM7 54-S was my all-time favorite for chipping. I'm in the process of switching back to Vokeys and am debating between the S grind and the D grind for my 54. Love both.

Anyway, current favorite is MP20 HMB 4 iron with Ventus Blue 9x HB shaft. This club is magic. I can do anything with it. It allowed me to pull my 5 iron so I could add a wood and still keep four wedges in the bag.

So far it depends on the day. Today I was hitting my best 5 wood shots. Some days it's my wedges. It's never my driver, but I've been fairway or first cut last 2 rounds, so look out.

A club I've been able to count on most is my 7 iron. It's that sweet spot.

Haywood 1 with Hzrdus Black RDX 70

Haywood 3W PXG 0211 5W

Haywood 18* driving iron

Haywood MB irons 3-PW

Mitsubishi Kuro Kage 80g iron shafts

Haywood 52/10 and 56/12 wedges

Haywood mid mallet putter

Golf Pride Concept Helix grips

F9 tour 3 wood. I hit a very straight ball with it. It's great off the tee and I trust it on par 5s too

It's a tie between two clubs:

image.png.d9c94739f74e7cb25412d45120df26fd.png

  • Rogue 7W: 21° loft, PX EvenFlow Green 5.5-R / 65 gram shaft.  Although shaft is a bit heavier than driver or 4W, it has excellent balance and really jumps through the ball. Great for getting ball out of medium rough, and with fade can hold green on approaches and long par 3 holes. Also can find fairway on certain tight landing areas. Happy mix: mid-high shot that does not balloon.
  • CB Pro Tungsten 7i: 34°, KBS Tour 90 R-flex, about 98 grams, with 3 grams lead tape 2" below grip on underside of shaft. I have lead tape on 7, 8 and 9i to make sure I get good hand drop on downswing. This is numbered iron that gives me most confidence on full shots, has delivered several approaches for birdies. Also, it's my chip-and-run club. Had used 8i, but tungsten sole weight tended to pop ball up on occasion. 7i gives much smoother rollout, and I can use "engage the bounce" sweep chip, same sole skim as with wedges.

On occasion my driver has been my favorite club, but it's been iffy this season and I'm trying different tune-up settings to get it back.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

The only club I'm reasonably competent with is the putter. Most days.

But probably more in keeping with the spirit of the thread I'd say I absolutely must have a Taylormade M4-or-later driver in order to play anything close to my best golf. It could be an M4, M6, SIM MAX, probably a SIM2 MAX (although I haven't tried one) but hitting any other driver is just wasting strokes.

Toss up right now between:

M1A Machine Converter Putter - Has been solid since I ordered it 9 years ago. I try not to cheat on it, and it's been good to me.

Gapr lo 3i/hy - Stock stiff kbs shaft. Cranked open as far as it'll go and goes straight to a baby fade everytime. Been great off the tee in a year when driver is everywhere for me.

Tough call. If it’s the club that I have a ton of confidence in, the one that produces the biggest smile, it’s got to be my 20* Adams super 9031 proto hybrid.

if it’s a club that I am best with, it’s got to be my 51* (52 bent to 51*)Gap wedge with full shots. It’s a Mizuno MP-R from 2006 or so with a Modus 105s shaft and 6* of bounce (I’ve bought a few over the years in good condition online)

Srixon ZX7 AW Recoil 95R - good for anything from 1-105 yards, confidence inspiring at address

Cobra F9 3H Devotion 8S - can hit it out of most any lie, great for punching out under trees, doesn't default left

Honorable mention to G400Max driver. My FIR is way higher than it used to (and perhaps deserves to) be...
