Rain pants

Recommended Posts

Are they worth having and what's the best... played today and it started to piss down... Didn't have a towel with me.. so I spent the day with a wet rear from the cart seat...

I was looking at the fj hydrolite the other day as well as the Adidas

I would like something light I can shove in my bag and leave there in the spring and fall

Ping Zero Gravity … very breathable, folds up smaller than any other. Great pants

If they are worth it depends on allot of factors. As a walker if it is warm I am really unlikely to put on rain pants and would be more likely to wear shorts and just let me legs get wet.

When it is gets cold I find them a must. I will wear tight fighting 'long jons' under them and then Gore-tex pants (don't like regular pants underneath). I prefer pac-lite pants(that is a type of Gore-tex) as they stretch and work well to add layers to. Lots of companies make a gore-tex and they all have to make it the standard so it just about the colours/fit you like. When walking you need something that breaths well

As rider you have less to worry about around the right cut, breathing etc.

The best rain pants are Kjus Pro 3L 2.0. If you want the best and are willing to pay for it.

Rain pants are great to have, if you are going to spend a lot of time in the elements and want to stay dry. I use to play in all sorts of bad weather, so, they are worth it to me. If you are only going to use them occasionally, then, you may not want to spend top dollar for rain pants. It sounds like you want packable rain pants, and, packable rain pants for hiking would work and will likely be less expensive.

NOTE: if you were a walker, you could get away with water repellant pants/shorts, but, for riding, you will need waterproof.

It's wild to me that kjus has jumped into the golf world to charge these insane prices, just like they do in the ski gear world.  Of the hundreds of skier/boarder friends I have known, I don't think a single one has ever purchased Kjus (edit: I live in America.  Europe could definitely be different).  It essentially seemed to serve as a brand for the boutique clothing/gear shops at the mega resorts, something for the jetsetters to pick up for après clout.  That's not to say they don't make top notch gear, because they probably do.  It's just that in the ski world there are dozens of brands using the same fabrics and layers but at much lower prices.  Unfortunately in golf, the options aren't nearly as prevalent.  You could always go on steepandcheap and look for some good sales on rain pants.  Brands like Mammut, Marmot, Outdoor Research, Black Diamond, etc.  They are top notch gear brands that make stuff for climbing, hiking, skiing, etc.  Chances are, you could find something better than a golf-specific pant for a better price.  I coach hockey and the hockey-specific clothing is absolutely awful (probably due to a small market).  I always get spring skiing gear for on-ice coaching, as it's abrasion resistant, light, and most importantly breathable.

regarding golf pants:

Linksoul uses Polartec NeoShell on their top of the line gear.  That's a proven waterproof material that works.  They are expensive, but Linksoul has regular sales of 30% and sometimes better.  The fits are decent, not perfect.  But if you catch them on a big sale, it's definitely worth it.  I have their pants and my only gripe is the color.  I got the grey as the black was sold out in my size.  I am not a huge fan of the color I got, as it just looks too much like sweat pants.  That said, they are stretchy, and have a good taper to the ankles.

Galvin Green gear is definitely great.  Excellent form, fit, and looks.  Paclite works, and the outer fabric they use is probably the best I've seen.  It's not too soft, but maintains stretch.  Super pricey though, and I'm not sure if they get on sale too often.

Sun Mountain has some awesome gear.  Fit is great, and they seem to be trending toward better styling.  I have the stratus jacket, and it's nice.  Top of the line pants are the Cirque pants.  Middle range pricing, so probably a good buy.  They are rated 20k/50k, which is insane.  Really considering these as my next pants.

I have no real opinion on FJ, but I'm guessing they make fine pants at the top end of their gear.

I just purchased and returned a set of Galway Bay gear.  Fit was decent, but the cuts looked too boxy.  Material was too crunchy.  Felt really outdated when compared to other new offerings.

I have a few pair of rain pants all by Zero Restriction - all Goretex.  I have both regular pants length and also two pair of ZR shorts. The shorts are really convenient as they slip on very easily.  Come down to about bottom of my kneecap. They all keep me dry with no issues.
