Could a 4 Handicap beat Bryson on the back 9 at Torrey?

Well, at least on the snowman hole. Nothing like rifling a shot right over the green.

DeChambeau is trying analytics and a technical approach to tame the game.  Ultimately, it won't work and I suspect it's the root cause for his oddly timed missteps with shorter irons and touch shots.

He also seems like an immature and petulant person so maybe that overwhelms him at times ? And then when he's a snit, everything goes haywire?

I think DeChambeau as the most successful golfer who has drawn inspiration from Homer Kelley of Golfing Machine fame. The only other Golfing Machine guy I can think of that was good was Bobby Clampett and Clampett's career melted down after two rounds at Troon.

"Get dressed Spaulding, you're playing golf today."
" No I'm not Grandpa, I'm playing tennis."
"No, you're playing golf and you're going to like it."

Bryson shot a 44, I would bet from the tips with those conditions he would have beat the majority of 4 indexes

I would expect a 4 to shoot 45 or more on the back 9 there from those tees with that rough

I have an early copy of TGM, which I bought in the early 70's.  After attempting to dig through it, looking for insights, I came to the conclusion that Kelly and Doyle (California guys) got high and decided to write an incomprehensible book as a huge joke on the golf community.

It is a tough read. Definitely not a cover to cover book.

I think a 4 handicap would have a tough time breaking 100 on 9 holes, I mean look at that rough!!! And don't they know this is the US Open????. I mean handicaps are irrelevant on WRX where you are either scratch and shoot par in the Master's or can't break 100, never ever anywhere near your handicap.

Looking back -

I would rather suffer a meltdown like Bryson than blow it all on one tee shot like Louis.

Why? -

You can explain the meltdown - it's relatable and happens to everyone that plays the game.

But, when you blatantly miss your bread and butter fade tee shot on the 71st hole, there is no explanation.

Bottom Line -

Bryson's name is already on the trophy.

Best post that I've read regarding yesterday's travesties🤙

I attended the '08 open and was plus 3 at the time.  I thought my over under was 80, but if I hit only 3 fairways like BD there is no way I break 80.  Some of the lies you get in the rough a regular player has never experienced.  The course yesterday had something like 5 or 6 par 4's over 500 yards.  So no, a 4 hcp player still struggled to shoot 44 on the back nine there.  It is a really tough golf course.

The average club 4~ wouldn't break 50 from the Tourney tees as they cannot at Oakmont, from the green tees(US Open tees), with the fairways, rough and greens in tourney condition.. I am not speaking to 4~'s that travelled north from Plus as former elite Ams or Pros, only to those that arrived at 4~ traveling south, and do not Play serious competitive golf, discounting the garden variety club and handicap events, which don't count.

If ya add a Pro to their group and they play it down & in, they're gonna be north of 💯, easily.

Cheers🍻

It would be really , really hard. I have played Torrey with tournament rough (non US open , but still long). You can make some pars (10 is not brutal, 13 is fairly easy if you play it conservative, so is 18 etc). But the rough on 11 the Par 3 is nasty, 12 is brutal...Etc. You'd make doubles and triples in that stuff.

I agree with you i'd bet between 45-50, and as you say that might even be generous

4 hcp person hits it 250ish off the tee ... and any time a 4 misses a fairway, it would be a double bogey at minimum ... there would be no advancing the ball at all, and a few attempts sideways out of the rough wouldn't make it to the fairway ... would take two shorts or more just to punch out to the side ... if you missed a green, repeat ... then you'd putt on greens that are faster than anything you've putted on, regardless of what you claim about your home course ...

Let's face it: a 4 hcp is a sh!tty golfer on US Open track.

A 4 handicap golfer isn't good enough to even enter qualifications.

The simple answer is why do these ridiculous threads keep coming up?  Maybe it is because many members here have some idealistic view that the courses they play are on par with the courses set up for the the majors, let alone a regular PGA Tour event.  🙄

Having his name on the trophy almost makes this implosion more unbelievable. I'm pretty sure he was 2 under on the front, and looked well on his way to defending his title, and played the back like a guy in a lower flight in the city championship. I missed a 4 footer to shoot a 32, and played the back in 46. It felt like an out of body experience.

Unbelievable?   The head quit and golf followed.

Having his name on the trophy gives him a pass.

These are the same people that continuously trash Bryson for the way he plays the game, acting like not winning the tournament every weekend (just like every other golfer in the world) makes him a not good golfer.

It's the Dunning-Kruger effect. Self-assessments are hard for most.
