The Open Championship 2021

The Open will return to Royal St George’s for the first time since 2011, when an emotional Darren Clarke fulfilled his boyhood dream of becoming Champion Golfer of the Year.

10 Years after an emotional win for Clarke. Can Lee Westwood emulate his success? I feel this could be an ideal course for Lee to win a major on.

Otherwise its hard to look to far past Rham going back to back in majors and becoming Champion Golfer of the Year.

DC and his caddie/swing coach Sandy Armour have revised their entire schedule around the Open, I expect him to play well there, the yardages are still well within his range, it just comes down to the putter.

This sounds like copy from the opening TV broadcast of any tournament.  I can imagine Jim Nantz saying this.

What sort of win isn't emotional?

He’s won the Irish open twice so I don’t think writing him off is wise.

Would love to see Louie overcome those two runner-ups and pull it off again this year.

Some guy will win. Royal St Georges is the venue. The one in the circulation closest to London town. Gonna be a battle for those 32k  tickets. The course has some similarities to Torrey. Pretty by the sea but a bit boring layout. Sure, the ingredients of a links with these undulating fairways, but there aint no postage stamps, no road holes, no Carnoustie 18:s. That I do remember.

And I do remember. The 83 Championship was the first I really saw televised. Had started to play golf just a few years earlier as the first person in family. No tournaments were televised back home in Scandinavia, but I happened to be in England, in the nearby Deal on vacation, and the house had a TV. Saw all of the last day, totally absorbed. I will never forget the last approach by Watson. First time I realized how good these guys are. 200 meters left, has to make par to win, takes a 4 iron and hits it to maybe 10 feet. D*mn...

OK, that was Birkdale and I do remember much of that course but I also saw Lyle win at St Georges, and I only remember Sandy.

Like Torrey it will not matter that you have forgot nearly every hole a week after, It will be a party, if the weather behaves. But it is generally less rainy down by the coast, than in Central London, right?
And hopefully no indian, scandinavian, kenyan, guayanian clone will mess things up.

Well, Ben Curtis did 😁

And Thomas Bjorn - famously - didn't.  Is he still in that bunker?

What an anti-climax that was! Thomas Bjorn, Vijay Singh, DL3 and Tiger all within a shot or 2 and the winner ends up being Curtis, who if memory serves me right, was the only person to finish under par for the week.

Yes true.  Anti-climactic in the sense that Curtis finished a bit earlier but if you remember his reaction on holing that par putt on 18 - he knew he posted a score that would be tough to beat.  A surprise winner no doubt but he went on to have a nice PGA Tour career, winning 4 times including that Open.

Yeah, no criticism of Curtis, he did what he had to do, even if that did mean shooting +4 for his last 7 holes. Looking back at it, it is galling to see that Tiger bogeyed 2 of his last 4 holes to finish two back.

He’s had success on great links courses before at the Irish Open in 2017 at Portstewart GC and in 2019 at Lahinch GC.

He definitely can’t be counted out of contending for the Claret Jug next month.
