I'm beginning to think this event is gearing up for something pretty bad, if the behavior yesterday is any indication of the public mindset. No I don't think golf fans over there are much different, or any different at all, from soccer fans.

What complete and utter nonsense.

These are all American websites, therefore irrelevant. We’ve discussed this.

Well WRX is an American based website so it's expected to be called The British Open 🙂

Don't look now but those Aussies and Japanese are gonna need a good talking to as well 🙂

Also let me be clear, I intend no disrespect. But there are other Opens and a lot of the world uses British Open to resolve ambiguity with other Opens.

Regardless the name it's a amazing event.

I get that the official name is The Open, and I don't have a problem with that.  But when people start correcting others for referring to it as the British Open, that's where things start getting pretentious.

History is important. It is 50 years older than any other of the National Opens.

Bit like the difference between

Hampshire

New Hampshire

York

New York

England

New England

You can’t buy history. Sorry.

Thank God the US Open (partnered with Amex, Cisco, Lexus, Rolex and Sentry)  is completely unsullied by commercial considerations.

Lol, you have to understand that most of us have a full appreciation for our cousins across the pond and your rich history and impact on our country.

I watchin Last Kingdom now yo!

Its just we like to bust your chops about what we see as a bit of fastidious pedanticism ; )

The Empire? Has a Star Wars ring to it. The Brits are a silly people. But overall  nice compared to the frogs. At least that what I heard in Spain.

I don't know about that.  During the 1982 World Cup in Spain, I heard, "Ingleses locos" more times than I can count.  They got a bad reputation for eating and drinking in bars and forgetting to pay.

In the next ten years more and more players will skip the British. In twenty years they’ll be paying top 200 players to show up. Eventually it will be cancelled and replaced on prime time TV with reruns of MASH. The British Open will be reduced to irrelevance, right where it belongs.

If it helps - when the US open is on I refer to it as “ the open “ ..... true story ... so I’d say it’s more about locational context . Look on the bright side. We don’t call it the French open ..... I mean that’s something positive...

Anyway I’m wondering what the odds are that we have a Johnny Rahm situation decide the tournaments outcome !?  I hope it doesn’t happen. But I just have a gut feeling it will play a part.

Yes. Those are the sponsors. For the tournament. That they played. Instead of cancelling to collect insurance money. 😉

USGA selling out for sponsorship dollars is relatively new, year 2012 I think.
