Screaming Deal On New Vega Wedges at 2ndSwing

K13

Recommended Posts

@K13, appreciate the heads-up.  I was looking for a gap and sand wedge for a spare bag that's going to live at my Dad's house.

But at that price, I couldn't resist picking up a 50, 52, 56 and 60.  Split between the VW04, VW06 and VW10 models.

Vega was the in-house brand for Kyoei, one of the high-end forging companies in Japan.

I believe in 2012 the brand was purchased outright by PGE (their European distributor), but they are still supposedly using Kyoei to forge their heads.

S20C steel, tends to be softer than Miura, but still considered a high-end JDM forging.

My guess is that someone had an excess of inventory and sold it at bulk to 2nd Swing.  A few years ago these heads might have cost you $200 each.

  • 2 weeks later...

I put a 50* VW04 in the bag, replacing a Mizuno S18.  I like the S18 but wanted to give the Vega a test drive. 2 rounds in and I'm sold.  The S20C gives it great feel off the face and the aggressive heel relief lets the club cut through rough easily.

Not sure about the KBS 105 shaft it came with.  I hit it well, but it definitely launches high.  Some of the other Vegas came with KBS Tour FLT 120 shafts.  I'm considering swapping in one of those to test that out...

Are the brushed a non plated finish that will rust? They look great but rust is not my preference.

Correct not plated designed to rust.

Forgive me but i've never heard of vega, what are they comparable to?

It would be comparable to Miura or Endo forgings, assuming they are still being made in the Kyoei facilities.

There is some question as to where these clubs are forged now.  From what I read, part of the purchase agreement (Vega was acquired in 2012 by their European distributor) was to continue to use the Kyoei forging house.  Don't know for how long that agreement applied.

For everyone who bought some Vega wedges. How do you like them?

I got both a VW 06 52 and VW 04 56 and really like both of them. They have great feel and balance. Grind on the VW 04 is great for opening it up to for pitches around the green.

my only concern is the face is wearing pretty quickly.

I put a 50* VW-04 in the bag almost immediately.  I love it.  I liked the Mizuno S18 that previously took that spot in the bag, but the VW-04 kicked it to the garage pretty easily.

Great feel off the face, very consistent distance and ball flight. I've done some chipping with it on tight lies and been happy with the results.

@Tar_Heel_93, I agree with your observation about the VW-04 grind.  I've found its very effective out of the rough due to the heel relief.

I got the 06s 52 and 58 the 58 in brushed plated. They definitely wear quickly but agree above that these have a very consistent feel, flight and easy to control distances. I got both with lamkin midsize grips with one label down the other label up and both maligned. Anyone else have the grips like this?

I assume you got the black non plated version?

I play all raw Vega irons and wedges. The faces do wear quickly, but that is to be expected.

Nope got the satin plated. Funny how far away from the middle the wear mark is. I’ll just say it’s from playing the club open for most of my shots 😀

All 4 of the Vegas I picked up had these grips. I prefer the MCC+4 grips I usually game, but these are pretty decent and I haven't regripped them.

I just put the raw 52* VW-10 in the bag.  These are great wedges, feel like we got a steal at that price.

The 2 VW-04 wedges I bought are satin.  They had not been hit before I received them.  I can now confidently say my strike with these wedges is just slightly heel-side...
