Having trouble with distance in my new clubs.

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a set of p770 from here, the previous owner said he turned the loft up 2 degrees. I have been told I need to play plus 1 so I figured I would try them out. To start I feel like I hit these clubs flush, they really feel so easy to hit. I am not getting the distance though. In fact I’m about 10-15 yards shorter and my distance have grown a lot closer together. My thought is I should bring them back to standard or 1 degree up. Either that or hit the range a few more times and just see if it’s a feel thing. Thanks for your wisdom in advance!

Flush sounds good. I am guessing you like them? I have P760 myself, and they’re great clubs.

2 degrees should only subtract a few yards?

Just use a club with lower number on it to add yardage. How the club feels to you is far more important than the number stamped on the bottom.

Cheers!

May be a swing issue, may be a shaft issue, not sure what it means you should “play plus 1” - one degree of loft whichever way you mean that won’t cost you 10-15 yards. Wouldn’t hurt to have them checked, but loft wouldn’t seem to be the problem, IMO.

When I got fitted the guy told me it might help if I play my loft 1 degree up because I was having the majority of my contact on the toe. The lie board showed I was always on the toe. That and a half inch added to my club.

I think you should check the shafts and make sure the Aline with your swing speed. Also 2* change seems a lot o me. If the were already 1* different from your other clubs that’s actually a 3* change.

So I always played standard and my fitter recommended I play 1* for better contact. I constantly hit towards the toe. Maybe why my contact feels great now but I get this big ballooning shot that’s short for me.

Are you talking about 2* lie or loft?  If the lofts are a lot weaker than you previous clubs that could  explain it. I think it might be a shaft issue instead of loft or lie.

2 degrees of loft. How would I go about checking the shafts for me? Take them into a fitter and hit my clubs to see what’s going on?

Thank you! I’ll keep chipping away until I figure this out.

He means lie angle. I’m no tech, but if you are hitting these new ones flush I doubt 1 degree in lie angle has anything to do with your distance issue. Have those checked as well.

He recommended a 1 degree upright LIE ANGLE, not loft...

If the majority of your strikes were toe strikes that would be the reason for the extra length..

The LIE ANGLE is what you checked on the lie board. Obviously you were coming thru toe down which is where the 1 degree upright lie suggestion came from..

1) you could talk to the person you got them from to confirm whether it was the loft or lie that was bent 2*.

2) A local builder or shop might be able to measure the lofts, it's pretty easy IF they have the right equipment to do it.

In both cases we'd need to know what model irons you are coming from to understand what those lofts were and what the difference is between the old and new sets.

Also would be helpful to know what shafts (model and flex) was in the old set and what is in the new set. A change there could effect the swing speed or the dynamic loft delivered.  Length and swing weight can as well in some cases.  So if you do take them to get checked, you might not want to stop at getting the lofts measured.

So they are the p770. They have the c lite 110 stiff shafts in them. I have always played stiff shaft but normally the metal ones. I’ve attached the specs he sent me. Not sure what their standard is but I’ll look.

With that being said, if your existing irons are more distance style clubs and you went to a P770 bent even further weak, you might have a full club or more less static loft. If the shafts are different, total crap shoot

This would be my guess. Previous owner probably had the lofts weakened 2 degrees to a more traditional loft & Shaft is probably the cause of the ballooning shots.

That's a good start.  But what irons were you playing previously that gave you more distance?

I played Nike pro cavity with the dynamic gold stiff shafts.

About 1* stronger than the 770's - but the lighter shaft in the 770's (110 gm vs 130) could be causing you to deloft the clubs even more than you did with the Nike's or even effecting the swing speed (lighter does not always give you a faster swing speed).

According to this the Lie angle was adjusted 2 degrees flat (opposite of what you need).

I would account the huge difference in shafts to the ball striking though (a ctaper and S300 are like night and day)

Its odd because it feels so good, like I’m making solid contact but then no distance abd towering ball flight.

Impact could be great and lie angle may not be a problem.  It's really more likely that your getting less shaft lean at impact - not delofting the clubs as much as you had before.

Use this to simple check to test lie angles (not a lie board).  Don't even need the labels, can read the marks right off the face.

I know this is a bit off topic but the shaft lean thing is a huge deal.

I've been working on a drill my swing coach gave me and one effect of the drill is at impact instead of the clubhead flipping and passing my hands I'm now slightly hands forward (not like Sergio or anything, just slightly).

I'm going to have to relearn all my distances. Looking at video of my swing, my hands are only a few inches more forward but on the 9-8-7-6 irons I swear the ball is flying 12-15 yards farther. And on the wedges instead of a full swing for a high, floaty 90-yard knuckleball I can make a 3/4 swing for a 90-yard low spinner.

All that from just a tiny little bit of forward shaft lean.

Thank you, I think this will tell me a lot. I am a little confused when it comes to marking the ball and how it transfer to the paper on the club. Really appreciate the help.

It's really pretty simple.

1) use a dry erase marker and put a straight line on a ball.

2) position the ball such that the line is where the club face will hit the ball and the line is oriented vertically.

3) hit ball.

4) look at face for the mark that is left.
