Reshaft or new irons?

LeftDaddy

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I appreciate any opinions on a dilemma I’m now facing.

I have the 2013 Callaway x-forged irons and I love them, and honestly have no real desire to replace them. That said, lately I’ve had two shafts snap at the tip due to rust. I had them sent to get the shafts replaced, but Project X no longer makes the PXIs, so they reshafted both with the new LZ shaft at 120g. I don’t mind the new shafts, but they are noticeably heavier than my PXIs. And it cost me $90 per club to have the 2 reshafted and shipped, etc.

I had been considering getting graphite shafts because I am getting older, and have little (and big) aches and pains after playing golf now. And the new hollow body blade-like irons from TM and now Callaway had caught my eye. But I still love the ‘13 x-forged.  And I don’t necessarily need increased distance. I move the ball pretty well for someone who’s almost 50 years old, and my gapping is all pretty good.

Anyway, I think I have 3 options about what to do next, and I’m curious as to opinions from folks on here.

1. Reshaft my current x-forged one by one with the Project X LZs.
2. Reshaft my current x-forged with some other shaft, maybe a lighter steel version , or graphite, etc.

3. Buy new clubs, like the new Callaway x-forged, or the Apex Pro 21s, or TM P790s, etc.

Costs won’t be all that much different at $90 per club to reshaft, so that isn’t a huge factor. I’d probably do option 2 tomorrow if I knew which shaft to use (but as a lefty it is very hard to get good fitting options). I think I’d lean towards the Nippon Modus 105s ? or the Aerotech Steelfibers if I got new shafts, but I don’t know since I haven’t hit any of them. I also might consider option 3 but I love my current irons, and I did hit a PXG hollow body iron a few weeks ago for fun, and hated it. So I’m not convinced I’d like anything new.  I guess I need to go hit some new clubs / shafts to really make this determination, but in lieu of that I was thinking that one of you might have a simpler suggestion (like “just get the nippons, you’ll love them!” Or something like that). Thanks!

My vote goes to option #4: Buy some used PXI shafts and drop them into your 2013 X-forged. Just because they're not produced at the factory anymore doesn't mean they're unavailable on the open market. This should be cheaper than $90 per club

As your aches and pains become more serious you can look into getting fit into some graphite iron shafts/new irons while you enjoy your current set. My guess is you'd probably like the Apex Pros which have a nice graphite stock offering (Mitsubishi MMT).

I would say why wait, get the graphite shafts now before your aches and pains become chronic. That's what I did back when and have no regrets. Today's graphite shafts are every bit as good as steel.

I think the new IO is the successor to the PXi. Are you able to get on a Mizuno optimizer? Should be able to at least narrow your choices. The new X-forged CB comes stock with the IO or the MMT at no extra cost. I'd consider Mizunos as well, something like the 921 tour or forged, tons of options at no upcharge.

I was waffling about this late last year, and my wife, who is a 3 to 6 rounds per year golfer, chimed in with the same advice, "you know it's a problem now, why wait until you have no choice."

Put Recoil Protos in my Mizunos, and now quite happy with the decision.  Have another set to reshaft and I'll have three graphite options, for when the mood strikes.  😉

Me personally if you like the PXIs so much I would get the cheapest set of irons that you can find with those shafts and have a clubmaker transfer them to your 2013 heads.

I would say get them reshafted. If two snapped at tip due to rust, more breaks are likely. And you don't want a 7i head to break off and fly into the lake, or bounce off a playing partner's head.

Others can recommend shaft models, but I wanted to warn about rust dangers.

Another vote for shaft pulls on the PXI

Project X make graphite shafts called Catalyst . They may be an option for you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://www.truetempersports.com/en-us/golf/golf/project-x-graphite-iron-shafts/catalyst-graphite-iron-golf-shafts.html

I had sold a mint set of Mizuno MP67’s because I thought it would be easier to just get fit for another set and go that route. While I’m happy with my purchase MP 20 HMB, I feel like i could have just reshafted with some pulls for the MP67’s and made a lateral move and kept some money in my pocket.

Time to upgrade and grab a set with steelfiber/recoils. They are a joint saver and your body will thank you. It’s about longevity playing this game. I’ve made the switch and never looked back. You can also grab some shaft pull sets on here for cheaper than $90 per. Just gotta look or put in the want to buy section.

My 7 iron broke off a couple of weeks ago mid-round. Was in great position on a par 5 and my group lost the hole and some $ because I then didn’t reach the par 5 in 3 and / or make par.

I have a buddy who used to do it but he retired and has mostly stopped working on clubs. My golf club basically doesn’t do much on lefty clubs which is a bummer.

Looks like the general consensus is to reshaft with either used PXIs or graphite.

Makes sense, so that begs another question for you guys. This one may seem stupid so I apologize in advance.

I play 3-P, and 1 inch long. So does that mean I need to buy 1 iron through 8 iron shafts?  I guess I’ve avoided buying shafts on here because of the need for the extra inch, and I don’t think that my current set has extensions. But maybe they do?  I’ve generally been steered away from extensions, but since I’ve never bought shafts myself I’m not sure what I’m buying.

If they are uncut shafts you will have the extra length to work with. Failing that you would need to find pulls that are overlength or do extensions.

If you do 1 iron through 8 iron shafts that would be soft-stepping twice.

So I could just buy normal 3-P shafts and get a local club builder to install them at the right length?  Thanks!

I owned a set of 2013 X-Forged and they were the best feeling irons I have ever owned.  The problem was they wore out, so I bought the Apex Pro 19 irons to replace them and they had the Elevate Tour shaft in them.  The Elevate is also a very good shaft.  Being the Ho I am, I now bag the 2021 X-Forged CB irons.  Personally, I like the 2013 X-Forged better.

Now in my 2013 X-Forged had the PXi 6.0 model shaft in them.  The X-Forged CB has the PX IO in them.  Where the PXi loaded and unloaded perfectly for my swing, the IO in the 6.0 didn't.  I am now 72 years old and was in my early 60s when I was bagging the 2013 model.  The 2013 and 2021 models of X-Forged don't play similar to me.  I think the latest iteration launches lower and with less spin than the 2013 model.

If you can't find PXi shafts to install in them you can, as another poster mentioned, try the PX IO shaft.  I would recommend going with the 5.5 flex in those for similar feel to the PXi.  As stated above, don't discount the True Temper Elevate ETS 115.  They come in a .355 taper tip that will match the hosel on your 2013 X-Forged.

You should learn to do your own club work.  It will save you a fortune.

Project x LZ’s are 115g for 5.5 and 110g for 5.0. Another shaft with similar flight characteristics are the standard Elevate line. The addition of VSS makes them additionally appealing to the creaky joint group.

Get similar weight shafts to your steel, few years ago I wasted a season trying to mak

His mileage may vary.  He just needs to test whatever shaft he is interested in buying.  Some people adjust to lighter shafts quite quickly.

I have a bit of an unfortunate update / dilemma. My club just called and said that ups apparently damaged the box and lost my iron head. They are doing a search on it now, but it isn’t looking good. I really don’t want a new iron / iron set. I love those 2013 x forged clubs. But Callaway preowned not eBay has a lefty 7 iron available. Ugh!  I may have to get a few new irons whether I like it or not…
