Anyone else done with Hybrids?

BallerNate

My hybrid is a situational club. Its an absolute rocket, but it depends on where I am playing if its in the bag. Right now I swap out between a 3 wood, 2iron, 3 hybrid, 4 hybrid, and a 7w. Just depends on where I am at, which two get in the bag. 90% of the time I am taking 2iron and the 3hybrid.

Loved my 818 hybrid.  Hit a nice high draw, and usually played it as my second shot on par 5’s.  I switched to the TS2 hybrid, and just don’t hit it as well.  More fades and cuts.  I will probably go back to the 818 series. Solid club!

I love my hybrids. I've got Ping G410's both 3H and 4H. I'm very seriously considering dumping my 5iron in lieu of a matching 5H, unfortunately it's really hard to find one on the used market with a stiff shaft.

I've had trouble with several different hybrid models, but I think I could hit these blindfolded.

You can always get a 5H, take out the stock shaft and get yourself an aftermarket shaft that actually fits your swing.

I've considered that, I've also considered ordering an additional 4 hybrid with the Red Alta CB that matches my others and swapping that shaft into the 5H and getting it cut and re-gripped to the proper length.

I really like the feel of that Alta CB Red, I like a counterbalanced feel and I hit my others so well I'd like to match them.

There is so much variance to hybrids, you really need to get out and hit them to see what you like.  They truly are tools.  I'm a sweeper as well, and I hit hybrids just fine.

My GOAT hybrids were old school Adams Pro that I gamed for like 6 years.  I replaced them and that opened a revolving door of successes and failures.  I never really got along with Apex ('16 or '19 variants), but really enjoyed 816 H2 and 818 H1 (I did not like the 818 H2 as much).  TM M1 were good, and SIM MAX was good as well.  I did not game Ping G series that well.  My point is there is so much variance in CG, Head Shape, adjustability, etc.  Most folks complain about hooking hybrids, but since you slice; it might be worth giving a SIM/SIM2 MAX a whack (or an M6 or M4).  They are super versatile heads that do have a bit of left bias due to how upright the lie angle is.  Either that or look at hybrids that have adjustable hosels, at your height, you're going to want something that can be made a bit upright.  Perhaps adding loft through adjustment might help as well, as that closes the face a bit.

I play the same shaft as my irons Modus 105s hs/X1 at 1/2 over standard iron length……. best move I’ve ever made, and I was never a hybrid guy. I have only found a few I like and have owned 5 since 2002!

The one I play now is an Adams super 9031 proto, which is small as far as hybrids go. I want it to go a certain distance consistently, so I wasn’t looking for some hot faced, high flying bomber.  I also have an Adams 9031 DHY with the same Modus steel shaft set up. It’s very much an in between Hybrid and Driving iron.

I’m not hitting my 19* hybrid all that great this year after a solid year last year. I’ve gone to a shorter, heavier shafted, 18* 5wood. Tour edge with one of them old 103x blueboard shafts. Seems to do everything better this year. On the other hand, I’m committed to my 22* Ping 410 replacing my 4i. I just never have occasion to hit it at my home course... maybe once every 3 rounds, but once I get my couple winter weeks down in Florida, I know it’ll be best.

Never really started.  I do have a pxg 2-H that has 17 degree loft and it is the only Hybrid I have ever had.  It really doesn't do anything different than my blueprint 2-iron, except for going higher in the air and having the tendency to draw or hook despite my best efforts. Sure feels good though, I will say.

I am much more comfortable with long irons (I'm the idiot that enjoys hitting long irons).

I'm a sweeper and hybrids work great for my game.  Presently playing 3 of them.  They are my go-to clubs in many situations.  Just easy to hit (for me)

Thanks for the insights, that’s good stuff for sure. Yeah, the hitting bays in my area are still closed due to COVID, so that’s been a big issue for the last 16 months…basically have to buy everything without hitting it and hope for the best.

I’ll keep those clubs in mind as potential options for sure though.

No that would be me. LOL

I put one in the bag when I first started playing some 25+ yrs ago. I hit it fairly well from 180. I sucked with my irons  while learning to hit them when I began playing. I actully learned how to play that 7w from 140 out to 180. I left the irons in bag untl I got inside of 140. I got really good hitting that 7w from different distances and everyone use to make jokes about me. What you hitting greenie? Let me guess 7w.

I think I started something back then. I use to play in a group of thirty. I wasn't long before most of the guys carried one. I remember one time we were playing a group scramble and we were out 200. The better guy in our group says can I hit that 7w of yours. He holes us out from the fairway for eagle..After the round we were hanging out and some asked about our eagle. Eric says I holed out using Greenie's 7w. What else?

I go back and forth over hybrids...  What I will say is if you are a flipper, hybrids can be absolutely horrible.  A late flip causes slices and an early flip (which is way easier with a hybrid) goes left of left.  I bought a 18* 2i this season and a 20* 3h, they go about the same total distance with the 3h going higher.  Here is the thing, miss hits with the hybrid, ie toe, heavy, skull, go much farther than miss hits with the 2i.  But the flip with the hybrid is death and only an overdraw with the 2i.  So I decided it was time to fix my swing...  I am still a work in progress with my swing, but I am able to hit the hybrid much straighter now and in most situations it is better than the 2i.  The top of my bag goes D, 4w, Utility spot, 21* 4i.  My miss is a straight push or over draw depending on my timing that day.

Is anyone else just totally done with trying to use Hybrids? I tried to make it work with a Callaway Rogue Hybrid 4 (20*) last season and just couldn’t make it work. This season I’ve been trying a Srixon Z H85 Hybrid 3 (19*), and I’m fed up.

I’m Ok hitting them off the Tee, but they are way shorter for me than a 3-Wood, Driving Iron, or 4-iron, and anytime I hit them off the deck it’s always a power fade/slice.

I understand that lots of people love them and swear by them, but it’s an experiment that just isn’t working for me.

Maybe it’s because I’m a sweeper, or maybe it’s that I’m 6’7? Maybe it’s a shaft issue? I don’t know, but whatever it is I feel like giving up on Hybrids.

Sorry for venting…just exhausted with trying to make them work!

Sorry if someone else already touched on this as I haven't read the entire thread, but there are TONS of draw-biased hybrids out there to help mitigate a slice.  Surely one of them would work for you.  Have you tried a Callaway Super Hybrid?  That might just be the ticket.  Also, don't be afraid to look at less "player's" type hybrids, such as Callaway B21 or Tour Edge Hot Launch.  If you slice either of those, then you got a problem, lol.

That is me currently.  Picked up a 818h 18deg and it was a monster all last year from the fairway or the tee, perfect club between 4i and 3 wood.  Now I can't hit it.  I think I have 1 solid tee shot with it, and 1 from the fairway all year.  My current miss with it is everything... I don't get it.  I've been thinking about picking up a 5 wood to match my 3 wood and start down that path.  But we had such good times together and I feel like I'm cheating on my true love

I realized the reason I was hitting a hybrid was to have a more forgiving club out of different lies, plus, I was looking for a second shot club or par 3 club that would land softly on greens.  So I thought, why not go to the far end of the spectrum and try some higher lofted fairway woods.  I now have a Mavrik Max 5W (18*) and a 9w (23*) in the bag.  The 9w has been a wonder, as I can softly hit as short as 165-170yds, or carry it 190-195yds with a full strong swing.

I play a 170-190yd par 3 hole every single morning, sometimes twice.  So I had 100+ shots tracked on my Arccos using the previous hybrid on this hole, showing my GIR stats at 80%.  Not too bad.  After 37 shots with the 9w, I've missed the green once, so 97% GIR.  It is such a nice flight, straight and high.

But I've also been playing with it, and I can still fade or draw on demand.  I always read how higher lofted woods were very one dimensional, but I haven't found that to be the case.  I can still shape them, and can even throw out a low line drive with the 5w if needed.

Yeah, unfortunately I haven't had success with Draw based clubs for whatever reason. The Draw setting on my old Rogue Driver was a mess, as was my experiment with the SIM Max D Driver and 3-Wood. Not sure what it is with Draw based clubs, but they're disastrous with my swing.

Been playing a TM SIM 2DHy and 3DHy (which are rebadged Adams DHY) and they can be lie angle +2/-2 degrees (love the 2 degree flat to kill the left side for me) with the updated Diamana Thump 2nd Gen 90 shaft and love them.  They offer not only perfect consistency off the tee but also easy out of rough and fairway to hit down on for great consistent flight and total distances.  Really cannot imaging switching these out for anything else after playing Mizuno CLK 2/3, PXG Gen2 2/4, and a couple of top brand fairways.  I go Driver, 2DHy, 3DHy, then my 4-LW. If you haven't hit these give them a whirl.  As stated, they offer the lookish of an iron with slight hybrid forgiveness and size. Also have a removable weight to dial in head weight/swing weight with the TM M4 or M6 rear weights.  I got my weights from Billy Bobs.

Yeah, I've been seriously considering trying a SIM DHY. Heard great things about it for sure. I'm leaning towards getting a DHY, or trying a 5-Wood or 7-Wood depending on loft.

No, I haven't. My Cally Rogue Hybrid 4 had an Aldila Synergy shaft in it, and my Srixon Z H85 has a Hzrdus Black shaft in it. Both good shafts that I've had success with in Woods, so not sure if it's a shaft issue, a swing issue, or what the problem is.

It might be worth a try. If you can hit a 3/4 iron a hybrid should be very doable.

What’s the weight of the shaft in your 3 wood & hybrid? And swing tempo?

I have tried hybrids but not for me.  7W has been one of best clubs in my bag for many years.  I have carried 7W since late 70's (persimmon model was my first).  I have found 7W is a more veratile club for my game.  I hit my long irons good and still do as senior (have gone to lighter graphite shafts that has helped) but day may come where I will look at hybrids more seriously.

It might be worth a try. If you can hit a 3/4 iron a hybrid should be very doable.

What’s the weight of the shaft in your 3 wood & hybrid? And swing tempo?

Should be doable in theory for sure. Just picked up a new SIM Max 3 Wood with a Ventus Blue 6S (62g) shaft in it, and my Srixon Z H85 Hybrid has a Hzrdus Black 6.0 (85g) shaft in it.

If you cant hit your long irons, you will also struggle with hybrids. They are similar in the way they are hit

Sounds like a good move.

I’ve just had a similar issue with my 3 wood. I had a low launch/spin shaft in it which was fine while I had the same shaft in my driver. A switch of driver shaft caused a big change with my 3 wood. I couldn’t hit it, everything was going low & right.

I hope the new hybrid goes well for you.
