Grip end cap twisting. Why?

Recommended Posts

I’ve played Iomic grips for years and just made the switch to No. 1 grips. They’re a rip off $16/each, but man they feel fantastic. Anyway, I regripped my clubs last night, have done the work myself for years, but something happened with a wedge and I need to know what I did incorrectly. The end cap twists relatively freely and is not ‘set’ like the other clubs. Can this be fixed or is this a bad grip? Bad tape job? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Video for reference.

Sounds like the grip wasn't fully installed.  My technique is to push the grip on fully while still in the vise and then immediately after taking it out of the vise give it a couple forceful slams on

One possibility is that you didn't push that one grip all the way on. It only takes 1/4" of space off the end of the shaft to make it feel loose.

I've done it before. And, I've regripped thousands of clubs in the last forty years. My process is to really push hard on the upper part of the grip when I think it's all the way on. 🙂

I feel like I did? I never had this issue before. Did I use to much grip solvent?

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play a round of competitive golf.

Should be easy to remove with a grip remover since it was recently installed.  FYI, the NO1 Pro grips are a lot more durable and long lasting than the standard NO1.  Firmer feel though.  So if you like that very soft feel of the standard NO1’s, you’ll just have to put up with replacing them more often.

NO1 grips need some extra care when installed with solvent. They have to be pushed all the way down to the grip cap and then rest for at least 12 hours without any twisting or moving. If they get twisted or if you play them too early the inner layer kind of peels of from the rest of the grip what causes the problem.

I've recently switched to No1 grips, and find them very difficult to get on all the way. This is most likely your problem.

You can't use too much solvent, the more the better. But I've noticed that the paint fill on my 50 Pro series grips are not too tolerant of strong solvents.

I'm considering using the air method with no tape on the set I'm building today.

Let me know how that goes. I’ve been toying with the air compressor idea and May just do that in the future assuming you have good results.

Can’t be any worse than Iomics. Those things wear extremely quick.

I'm building the clubs this weekend, and weather permitting, I'll be playing mid week with them.

I only play iomics and No. 1s and do all my grip installs. I've always go more liberal with the solvent with the no.1 and really drive it all the way to the end cap because I hate that feeling of like the last half inch not firmly on. Definitely have to have them sit a little bit longer to avoid that twisting. Did this with my driver played it too early because got too excited and now the lining is completely not straight.

I've tried the air compressor with no. 1s on a couple grips within the past few weeks. Just make sure you have masking tape all the way to cover the grip because the one I put on my driving iron twists at the label end because I did not put the tape all the way down to the grip end...at least this is why i believe it is twisting there. Can always blow it off and try again. The other one was on a 5-wood. Starting the air compressor method with these grips is the hardest part because you have to be careful that it doesn't start to fold over. Had this happen at first but then just applied a little bit of mineral spirits without an issue. GL

These are without a doubt the best grips on earth if you like extreme tacky feel.  Mine have lasted forever also, just soap and water with a green scrub pad every few rounds.   Now to the grip butt cap twister, I have had to SLAM a few on the concrete to get the butt cap all the way on.

No problem blowing No. 1 grips on.  They're no different than Star, Pure, or Iomic in that regard.  I always use single-sided tape and cheap hairspray when I blow grips on.  The hairspray is only a quick shot into the grip and then it's blown on.  It acts as temporary lubricant to ensure the grip goes on easily and then also prevents any possible slippage (like double-sided tape jobs).  The advantage of hairspray is that the grips are still easy to blow off and there's no gummy residue to deal with like with double-sided tape.

Love the Iomic grips. I just find that it is easier to upgrade the iron set instead of re-gripping 3x a year. LOL

This👍

Additional note, Ive blown my grips on for years now and its the way go. However i have been using water and a small shot of dawn with masking tape. I have had zero issues with slippage but recently when I removed  some grips i noticed quite a bit of rust on the butt end of the shaft. I may just have to switch to the hairspray.
