Hybrid or Long Iron….I currently have the Titleist 712u 3-Iron in play, but im thinking about putting a hybrid in play. I feel that a hybrid will be easier off tee and even easier for catching up on par 5 or even long par 4s. Only thing I am worried about is, it will be harder to keep a hybrid low (stinger type shot) to keep under trees and strong wind. What yall think? Any Hybrids out there that can help me with this, ie low trajectory i guess.

You could always split the difference between a hybrid and driving iron with a DHY (Adams or Taylormade) a Titleist U510, Ping Crossover, Tour Edge (ironwood or EXS Utility)

The lowest flying hybrid I have found over the years is a Adams Pro Mini (same club as the Super 9031 proto)

other than that, you are limited since the hybrid is meant to fly higher….. if you want something more 2020-2021 then the Tour Edge Exotics EXS Pro hybrid is the only one I’ve found that doesn’t want to pierce the sun, but flies higher than the Adams Pro mini (Super 9031 proto)

I have pics below of the Adams Super 9031 hybrid (same as Pro Mini) and the 9031 DHY as well as a TEE CBX119 hybrid. I threw a T-MB in there for a perspective on size.

Sime if the DHY types Titleist U510, Ping Crossover, Taylormade DHY, Gapr……ironwood…..etc, sit in between hybrid and iron.

The TEE CBX119 that’s pictured below is not large as far as hybrids go. More along the lines of average “iron replacement type” rather than your bigger ones like Sim Max, Callaway super hybrid or Maverik.

I was having issues getting my 3 iron much further than my 4, so I pulled it for a few different options I am still playing with. I got a GAPR Mid 4h turned down to 20.5 and it seems to be doing the trick.

Because I have issues I also just got a GAPR Lo 3h that I am playing with as well. Trying to see if I like the Mid or Lo more, so far the Mid is winning, but it's only been a week.

Do you just hit it like a stinger? Or more thinner?

Off the tee with the 17 I can hit a shot very similar to a stinger, doesn’t get much higher than 25’ and will run out to about 215 yards. Off the deck I use the 20 if a low shot is needed and hit little punch cuts/hooks

its easier to elevate than a T-MB, but not quite a hybrid.  It’s not in my bag any longer due to gapping issues with my new set of clubs (Mizuno HMB’s)

I hit it at the range often. I shafted my hybrids and the DHY with Modus 105 steel shafts, and they fly just right.

This particular Adams DHY is 24* loft and flies like my 6-7 iron, with a nice soft landing. There really isn’t much difference in height from my 9031 hybrid to my 9031 DHY. It’s a very veristile club.

Got it. What length do you use your 17?

I just haven’t found anything better than the Adams Super 9031/ Pro mini.

I play my 20*  at standard 2 iron length (which is 1/2 shorter than the original graphite, or 1/2 longer than my set 3 iron length) with the same steel shafts I have in my irons Modus 105s hs/x1 at 1/2 over length. Total game changer. I played a super short course today (9 holes) and hit it 4 times.

I had the original Adams Idea Pro, Sonartec MD, Callaway Apex (2016), the TEE CBX119 HYBRID 16*,  which just got replaced  by a 4 wood, and the Super 9031 Proto………. Without question, the 9031 is the best hybrid I’ve ever hit for an iron replacement club.  It’s not the hottest faced, not the highest flying, but the one most like an iron as far as flight, shape, and distance control…,.. it’s everything a hybrid should be IMHO!

I had always ( and still do to a point ) not liked the look of Hybrids for whatever reason. Played 2, 3 and 4 irons and hit them relatively good the majority of the time. Finally about 10 years ago ( 63 now ) I couldn't deny the fact that they were more forgiving and easier to hit. Got a set of the Adams Idea Pro A12 and haven't looked back, got the 17*, 19* and 22*. A few years ago replaced them with the PXG Gen 2's. Believe it or not TO ME they are even easier to hit than the Adams.

DRIVER -    Taylor Made Sim 2 - 9* | 🔥🔥KHT AUTOFLEX SF505🔥🔥
3 WD -        Taylor Made Sim Max 14* | Ventus Red Regular
HYBRIDS-   PXG Gen 2 -  2/3/4 | Accra Tour 100i Stiff
IRONS -       PXG Gen 4 -  0311XP 5 - GW | Mitsubishi MMT 80 Stiff
WEDGES -  Ping Stealth Glide 2.0 54-12 / 58-06 Wedges | Wedge Flex
GRIPS -       JUMBOMAX XL ULTRALIGHT grips on ALL
PUTTER -   PXG ☠️One and Done☠️w/JUMBOMAX 17" FLAT
BAG -           PXG Staff Bag
BALLS -       Bridgestone BXS / Pro V1

You have traditional 3i, then you have driving iron/fatter iron/Gi irons with similar loft but different CG/weight to help elevate the ball. Same goes for hybrids.

When hybrid shopping and demo'ing, look at the type of hybrid, size, and loft. For example I gamed a Rogue 3H for a year, my buddy has the Rogue X. His feels like a mini-wood to me 🙂

I replaced my Rogue with a Mavrik Pro vs. a standard Mavrik hybrid. The Pro has a bit smaller head, no problem flighting it down a bit.  If I wanted a bit lower flight, I'd look at the Apex line in Cally (I just know cally better then other brands: the paradigm is the same: get the club shape/size/cg you desire they are not all equal)

I use the Maltby FDI Hybrid Irons for the same purpose, as an iron replacement club.  Easy to hit low stingers, or launch high and land softly on the green.  Way more forgiving than my long irons, but better control and consistency than other hybrids I've tried. Had to try several shafts and play with the head weight and lengths to get it just right.  Its nice that these have replaceable weights in the heads, it makes things easier.  I also had mine bent to fit better with my irons.  After my 27 degree (2014) Apex 6i, I carry  24, 21, and 18 degree FDI's.  I use the 18 mostly off the tee.  And some days I could play the whole round without my driver without much of a scoring penalty.  They are also fairly cheap, especially if you have an extra shaft and grip lying around like I did.

Im trying out the TM Burner HT 19 degree right now, and also the Mizuno MP650 17 degree. The 17 has a nice muted sound and is soft. Just a little harder to hit. The sound off of the Burner is nice and crisp and wayy easier to hit. Just the color and the look for the burner is disturbing to be lol

I have a Mavrik Pro 3H and 4H and can hit them pretty high or flight them.  Tbh, my natural shot with these hybrids is a lower piercing shot, but I can get them up pretty high if I like.

My experience with these is the same. And they have very flat and straight face on them so they play more like an iron than most hybrids.

I had a 5-iron, but i added the 4-iron and took out my 3-iron and been trying out different hybrids.
