What do these numbers tell me?

Recommended Posts

61 year old playing on a pretty challenging Pete Dye par 71 course.  I have some ideas on what these average numbers are telling me, but will appreciate any insights; particularly on where you believe I might best focus my efforts for improving score.  Thank you.

Score  80

Fairways  50% (then GIR after fairway hit is 56%)

GIR 44% (Par 3 at 37%; Par 4 at 42%; Par 5 at 61%)

Putts  33 round.  Overall 3 putts at 7% (and at 13% for 3 putt after a GIR)

Up/Down  25%

Penalty per round 1 stroke

Doubles or worse per round at 2

Par 3 average 3.71

Par 4 average   4.44

Par 5 average 5.44

Looks like chipping and putting needs work given the number of putts.   Ball striking would be next unless it's a length issue keeping you off greens

Distance not an issue.  For reference,  my driver distance exceeds that of the scratch/plus senior players in our group.

First of all 80 average is pretty good!

44% greens with 56% from fairways isn’t too bad.

Two 3 putts a round seems a bit high. I’m similar, but mostly from hitting greens too far from the pin.

I'm guessing that 80 is probably a decent differential on a Dye course!

GIRs are within a decent range for that handicap, but setting a goal to up your average by 1-2 per round should put you in the 70's alone, other than that I'd continue to work on short game. If you are missing 10+ GIRs per round it will take a lot of stress off your score if you miss in the right spots and get up and down more frequently.

This makes sense, and thanks for taking the time to help out.

I’d focus on 150-200 yd category of ballstriking. Seems like your GIR for par 3’s and par 5’s is lower than it should be, while your scoring on par 5’s could be better too.

I assume your par 3’s are in the range of 150 to 180 yd, and your 2nd shot on par 5’s are at least 180-200 yd (since you mentioned distance isn’t a problem off the tee).

More fairways, more greens, score better on the par 5s. Also seems like a lot of putts for the greens hit number. 13% for GIR 3 putts is a lot.
