Spiral wrap or one piece tape on re-grip?

Always been a spiral wrap fan, hated the wrinkles and overlap on one piece of tape.

It depends on who is installing the grip as to wrinkles etc. But I will say as a man of uncanny feel that some can feel the difference between a 1 piece tape and a old school spiral wrap. Sometimes it depends on the type of grip and how thick it is. If you were at my shop I can do them anyway someone wants them'

FTR I have an uncanny sense of feel whether it is Golf or driving a race car and honestly I can not feel the difference in a spiral wrap and a one piece wrap but I will concurr you maybe have a finer sense of feel on that as I have

I don’t think I could feel the difference,  but it’s one of those things I can certainly see putting grips on.

I can’t feel the difference between using narrow or wide tape. The one advantage of using wide tape is when you install more than one layer. It’s no big deal to overlay wide tape, but with narrow tape you have to be very exacting.

If it bothers you, put the tape on from the top, I do it from the bottom so I can see how much is getting tucked in, and you won't see the overlap on the bottom. 🙂

I actually use both one layer of 2” then a spiral wrap the entire length . All this is my taping of

choice with my GP Mid size Tour Wrap.

I suspect the spiraling was a holdover from the pre-World War II days when spiral strips of cotton gauze were used to build up leather strip grips. The spiraling helped take the slack/bagginess out of the gauze. 

 

The idea for modern slip-on rubber and synthetic grips came from condoms, which were distributed heavily during World War II as a public health measure for combat troops.

 

As a caddie circa 1970, I got to observe the old-timer clubsmiths in the pro shop. Most of them continued to spiral-wrap the build-up and double-stickly tape used in regripping.

 

I got some component irons built for me in 1994, and the clubsmith put on the tape as straight pull-down layers. After that, I noticed a majority were using straight down application vs. spiral.

 

Memory lapse: I regripped my clubs occasionally in the 1970s and 1980s, but I can't remember if I used pull-down or spiral taping. Back then, everyday golfers regripped maybe once every four years. In between, we scrubbed them down a couple of times a season.

I was stating that it looked sloppy, as in a “pet peeve”. That’s all. Kinda like the Karen’s that spend $400 on belt when a $50 one does the same thing. 

 

Been doing the spiral wrap for 25+ years, just making small talk. No need to get excited.

If you install the 2in tape on the shaft at a bit of an angle up and down the shaft, when you wrap the rest of the tape on the shaft there will be no wrinkles. You just need more experience with 2in tape.

Also if you’re doing multiple wraps of the thick stuff, rotate the seam and it would build on itself. That’s the only time I’ve noticed it is when building up a grip, and there’s multiple seams stacked on top of one another.

I use 2 or 3 layers of build up and just use 2" tape, can't tell. I wouldn't do spiral unless I had one of those fixtures for it (and even then probably still wouldn't), seems quite tedious. I don't seem to get wrinkles though unless I get in a rush.

The 2" tape on the market now is usually slightly less than 2" so that it won't overlap on a .600 butt shaft.

And there is a 3rd way.  Using the 18mm tape you run the tape up the shaft to the end, make a U-turn over the end, and then back down the shaft.  There is no tape overlap, it's easier to prevent wrinkles, and you don't have to twist the overhang at the shaft's end.  Spiraling was difficult to keep the angle and resulting gap consistent; it can also be a PIA to remove as it likes to come off in pieces.  While I use air pretty much exclusively now, this is what I used to do with the narrower tape all the time.

I u se this method, and then double it, with the second piece at 90°. If done precisely, you'll get 4 vertical strips with about 1/8" of overlap. The second strip also helps keep the first strip from lifting along the edges, which it will tend to do if you don't put the grip on quickly.

I'm not one that is bothered by the slight overlap.

I buy the good stuff.  It's still 2" wide.

The bad part is that many shaft butts exceed .600."
