bigger gapping at the top?

My bag is pretty much set with the exception of one, potentially two, spots at the top between my driver and irons

 

My driver carries 260-265yards

16.5* fairway carries 220-225

20* hybrid goes 205-210

4i flies 190

 

I used to carry a 15* 3wood that would go 230-240 and keep thinking it might be better to have larger gaps at the top? i.e. go back to a 3w and deloft the hybrid to extend gapping to 15-20 yards

The 3W gives an extra 10 yards or so on good hits... 4W probably more reliable.

 

Can you choke down and take a few yards off the 20-H if needed?

 

You won't get laser-accurate distances with 4W and 20-H. If you know what the gaps are, you can work with them.

 

Ultimate question: Which choice makes your net-strokes gained better... carrying 3W or 4W?

Just depends on what you need. Do you often need to hit a shot that goes 230-40 instead of 220-25?
 

The top end of my bag is full of large gaps, but I very rarely have more than a hybrid into any par 5 in my area so there’s no sense in my sacrificing the 13.5* off the tee for a shot that comes up once every 15-20 rounds.

It all depends what you requirements are.

 

Do you play 230-240 yard par 3 or do you need the extra yardage to attack par 5s with you second shot...

 Are you playing a 4 wood cause it’s more consistent than your the wood?

I personally would opt to stretch out the wood and hybrid distances. That should give you more options for getting closer in two on more par 5s. But if you play tees where 220-225 is enough to get home/greenside most of the time, you could stay with what you’ve got. IMO hybrids and woods are well suited for choking up to take off some distance, so having a longer max distance is a good trade.

I’m carrying exactly the same as you are. Converting the 3 and 5 woods into the 4 let’s me carry a dedicated sand wedge.

How reliable is that shot over 225 yards? Unless the course you regularly play warrants it and it's a shot you can reliably hit, I'd stick with what you have.

I just moved and my new “home” course is relatively short. If I hit a good drive then I’ll have anywhere between 200 and 230-240yards into the green. My 16.5 can get me there but the wrx ho in me keeps whispering in my ear to try another 15* for more “versatility” (aka to make up for bad drives at my home course and also for when I play at longer courses)

Seems fine to me.  Is the 4w carry off the deck?  Can you squeeze a little more off the tee if desired?  If so, I think you’re fine.
