Old clubs? Anyone still gaming 10+ yr old stuff

Does it make me a bad person to play illegal grooves when my friends arent?

Not in wedges but in irons. Currently finishing a resurrection of TM Rac TP MBs from 2006.

I feel a little dirt playing clubs with non conforming grooves...

The spin rate between pre-2010 clubs and post 2010 clubs are equal when hit off of clean lies, but offer a few more hundred RPMs when hitting out of the rough with the non-conforming clubs.  Me personally I think it's a stupid rule and you should play clubs that you want.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

Read an article once which asked the question how often to replace clubs. Main point there were wedges are the first to be replaced if the grooves wear out and you lose spin. Putter never needs to be replaced if you put well with them, irons rarely I think (though the grooves issue is there a bit too but less than wedges) and woods only if they are so old that newer generation is more forgiving (distance is about a yard more per year according to a bunch of comparison tests I have seen).

So, if it still works, then no issues. I have some old clubs in my bags as well but they stay as they work: old late 80s putter (I think), late 90s PW, 10 year old driver (though I don't like drivers in general, this works as well (or as badly) as any more recent I played with), old hybrid (2007-ish I think).

Bag 1: 2h: Srixon ZX4h: TM M1 ('17) ; Irons: MD Golf 7i & 9i, Wedges: RTX full face 52o & 58o; Putter: Spalding Pro Flite

Unless you are playing golf at a professional level, elite level amateur competitions or events where Model Local Rule G2 is in effect your grooves are considered legal until the start of 2024.

Decided a little over a month ago to go vintage.  Find the irons(2006 model) that I once had and loved the look of and put them into play.  The 3 wood (2014) was a pleasant surprise as I found it for $10 on ebay and it worked out great.

I'm playing some of my best golf right now with these "Vintage" clubs

Yep no tournaments with these clubs, they're more for fun. Thanks for letting me know I didn't know this!

R11 driver still in play, though if I'm being honest I've been trying to replace it for 3 years now.

Overhauled my entire bag last year.  Up until then, almost every club in my bag was 10+ years old.  I know this opinion doesn't fly around here, but I believe you generally do more harm than good constantly swapping out clubs.

I’m gaming Titleist 841 irons (1984) and a bullseye putter, the only other irons I’m looking to purchase and put in the bag that would be considered newer are Titleist box blades which came out in 87’.

I have a newer ping driver and hybrid but everything else in the bag is a classic. They just don’t make forged blades like they used to. By the way if anyone knows where I could find a set of box blades? that would be much appreciated.

I recently put my oldest set of irons back in the bag. Srixon i-506's on NV Pro graphite shafts.

I've tried various other sets over the last five years but these just fit me well. When I decided I needed to go back to graphite it was like coming home. I did have the lofts adjusted to match the more recent Srixon iron lofts, but that's it.

I rock some Wilson System 45s from the mid 90s, a TaylorMade R7 from the mid 2000s, a TaylorMade rescue 19 degree from probably 09, and a Scotty Laguna from the late 90s. I shoot mid 80s. Could I shave off some strokes with newer stuff? Probably. Aside from my Scotty I'm in the market to replace most of it with stuff from the 2010s .

Currently no.  I do have a set of irons (backups, Ben Hogan 1999 Apex bladed ) and have a couple Titleist 905 drivers (T and S, from 2005) available just in case my current irons and driver go haywire.

I know they aren’t 10 years old but hear me out!

For me being a typical Wrx’er who’s always trying to find the latest and greatest, I’m proud that I have some clubs in the bag that are older than 5 years old lol.

I game a Nike Engage raw wedge set 50,55,60 (continue to try and find greener grass with newer wedges and haven’t found anything).

I also game the GOAT 3 wood (in my humble opinion) a tour issue 2016 M2!

I’m still gaming 962 irons (2-W), an i15 driver and an old Adam’s tight lies tour 17 FW. I shoot low 70s on average and just haven’t liked much (if any) of the new stuff..

Anyone else in the same boat? Just haven’t seen anything that’s that drastic of a performance enhancement to replace my old stuff…

so In better player irons, the only thing that’s really changed is loft.  So it’s not a surprise you don’t see much that performs better.  Fairway woods, and wedges, frankly haven’t changed a ton either.   And putters are just preference anyway.

the one that surprises me a little bit is the driver.  It’s very hard to ignore that newer drivers are more forgiving on miss hits.  They retain much better ball speed and launch conditions.   The only club I personally think you should reconsider is the driver. Newer drivers are definitely far better on mishits than your i15.
