Old clubs? Anyone still gaming 10+ yr old stuff

I came back to the game after a 20 year hiatus, and as such I am gaming Ping Eye2 + (2-SW) and Anser putter.

Waiting for the Ping g425 irons and Glide wedges (ordered May 11th, 2021)

I received my Ping Driver 410 plus 10.5* and g425 3-wood…all with stock graphite shaft-stiff.

the G425 driver replaced a Ping Eye2 wooden driver with a aldilla hm-40 shaft at 2.8* flex.

I adjusted the loft of my 1999 Ben Hogan Apex pitching wedge to be at 52* and will serve as my GW.  This set was my primary set until last year and I have gamed this particular set from 2012 or so.  My first set I got back in 1999 and gamed that until Spring 2005. Will have a range session soon to see how the delofted PW works as a GW.

Driver:  TaylorMade 300 Mini 11.5° (10.2°), Fujikura Ventus Blue 5S Velocore

3W:  TaylorMade M4 15°, Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7S

Hybrid:  TaylorMade Sim2 2 Iron Hybrid 17°, Mitsubishi Tensai AV Raw Blue 80 stiff

Irons:  Mizuno Pro 223 4-PW, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff

GW / SW: Mizuno T-22, 52° (bent to 50°)/ 56° (bent to 54°), True Temper S400

LW:  Scratch Golf 1018 forged 58° DS, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff

Putter:  Byron Morgan Epic Day custom, Salty MidPlus cork grip

Grips:  BestGrips Augusta Microperf leather slip on

Most of my bag is old. I don't change equipment often - nor do I have the disposable income to do so. I would rather spend my money on greens fees. If I am going to purchase a "new" club, it's always something old. In fact, the "newest" club in my bag is an 8 year old Titleist 913 hybrid I picked up last week for ~ $60. I just don't see the need to lay out the kind of money they want for new equipment these days. Very little return on investment, IMHO.

The oldest club in my bag, depending on the day and course is either my Cleveland CG7 Tour irons or the F50 Mizuno 5 wood I occasionally carry. They work fine.

Agreed, my newest driver is a 983K.

At Dick’s the other day I saw the latest Titleist under lock and key for $529.00. Probably a great club but, I too see that going towards green fees.

OP is a playa shooting low 70s with DCIs 2-PW, single Adams FW, i15 driver.... Tried and true for years - that's the mark of someone who knows their game.  I doubt much if any score gains to be had with newer equipment.  Launch monitor gains - sure.

My clubs aren't 10 years old yet, but pretty sure most will get there.  MP54s came out 2013-14, got them new 2015.  Everything else was bought used (except NOS gap wedge and some shafts).  No desire to ever shell out $ for any new club at their prices these days.  Maybe DTC, maybe...  Even then I'd prefer to find deals on clubs that caught my interest (looks, specs, reviews), pick up at low cost, and tinker once in a while.

I’m still gaming 962 irons (2-W), an i15 driver and an old Adam’s tight lies tour 17 FW. I shoot low 70s on average and just haven’t liked much (if any) of the new stuff..

Anyone else in the same boat? Just haven’t seen anything that’s that drastic of a performance enhancement to replace my old stuff…

Pretty sure the 962s are nearly 25 years old...

I have old gear, do I use it. No. I have Mizuno MP20s with the fat HMB versions in my longer irons. Sometimes I mishit the six iron and marvel how on earth it lands on the green.

If I'm really bored I can wind back the clock. Then wonder why I do it!

My blades are NOS '01 I am told. They play fantastic, but blade technology peaked in the 60's I think. So I'm good.

<edit> the heads are '01, the shafts are a little newer, like '12?

I beg to differ on blade technology peaking in the 60s... have you hit any new blades from the past 5 or 6 years???? They play better then gi irons to me. Last time i checked i can hit a blade and a gi iron 5 yards short or long and left or right off line... the blades ive been playing dont sting barely either.

Well I played my Taylormade rescue dual from new in 2004 to the start of this year. Then I swapped it for the TP version, so that things 17 years old. Just can’t seem to find hybrids I hit any better.

Goodness me. I'm too frightened to actually hit them. I don't think I'd get a wooden driver and balata more than 200m!

You'd be surprised what a well struck ball still would do.  The feel is totally different.  It's a terrific feeling and sound!

If you can point me to a location where I can hit lefty blades from the last 10 years, you let me know. Until then, I will continue to hit what I can get my mitts on and hope for the best.

I'm getting around to updating all my stuff, not because the new technology in the heads, but simply to get better fit and stuff custom built for me... the last legacy clubs in my bag are all Adams stuff...

Adams Speedline 3 wood (it's only 9 years old)... don't love the shaft in it, and I'll be considering the TM mini driver to replace it.

Adams CMBs... Built them on a whim after buying heads here for $50... due to their tips, I couldn't get cheap shafts, so I got some pulls from my pro.. I have about $300 into the set total, but they aren't built to my exact specifications... I've also never owned NEW irons, so I'm starting the shopping process... I'd happily game them if I could get them shafted with S400s without spending a ton of money... that's not really an option, so I guess I'm replacing them.

I'm not saying they don't exist, I'm saying they are tough to find somewhere they can be hit. 🤣

Maybe some day they will have a "Lefty Demo Day" because even demo days usually lack lefties.

All of my clubs are old or older designs but with new shafts. My 2, 4 and 7 woods are 1998 Big Bertha Warbird and I have never hit anything better.  I have Acer XV Tour irons which are a cast blade that were designed over 10 years ago. I have the 5i Acer XV Pro which is a c.b. that has been around a while too. I just a bought 90 something DCI black SW with good grooves because it's hard to find a small SW at my budget. My putter is a copy of a famous Dunlop half mallet from the 80's. My h.c. is around 12 but I expect to be single digit w/in the year, or close.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

I didnt realise how are why they dont have enough access for left handers to demo... thats crazy lol. I guess buy blindly and hope they work out lol

That's about it. Lucky I've at least broke even on the stuff I'm not playing. Once my swing gets better, I am going to do a fitting to see if there is anything I'm missing. But even fitters lack lefty crap to try other than a 6 or 7 iron most of the time.

Less than 10% of the market, I think. So you can see why there might not be a huge push. And if less than 10% of golfers play a blade iron, imagine that tiny market for lefty blade.
