Old clubs? Anyone still gaming 10+ yr old stuff

Everything in my current bag is more than 10 yrs old(including some golf balls lol). My driver is a Callaway FT-5, I have a couple Taylor Made hybrid clubs from the same time frame, my putter is the original Taylor Made Monza Spider from 2008/2009 and to top it off, I am still playing my Mizuno MP30's from around 2003.

That will be changing though, if my new Ping G425 irons ever come in and I also just added a new Odyssey Stroke Labs Tuttle putter. I'm also close to pulling the trigger on a G425 3W and Hybrid. Been way too long on my equipment.

I just snagged another set of Patent Pending Eye2s off the 'Bay.  My guess is they were built in '83 or '84 but won't know for sure until I get in touch with CS at PING.  Looking forward to having them refinished and put into play...

Here is what the refinished set looks like...

Still playing the first set of new irons I bought for myself, Callaway Razr X black. They will be 10 years old in March '22. Got them because I loved the look and will keep them around because these days it's hard to find black LH irons (though they do exist). Also played a Ping Karsten Anser 2 until about a month ago and switched after a new putter birthday gift from my dad.

I have just kicked out my oldest club, an R9 4w, that was in my bag for 11 years. A TM M4 5w with a Honma Vizard shaft has replaced it, but I might crank the 4w down to 16* and carry solely as a tee-shot club for certain courses around me.

The R9 4w feels better, but the M4 is so much easier to launch off the deck, and finding that shaft with it was serendipity itself.

I still play my amazing, trusty Cobra ZL driver.  Been fitted multiple times in the last few years and have toyed around with several newer drivers, nothing ever beats it enough to justify something new.

I also just replaced my Adams CMB irons with Ping i210s.

Ping G425 Max 5 wood, 17.5* set to 18.5*, Tensei AV Raw Orange 75 S

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Just started playing my Wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge Irons again. They are AT LEAST 50 years old and still in great shape. The lofts are obviously weak compared to today's but they perform great!

How to play golf.
Hit the ball.
Find the ball
Repeat until the ball is in the hole.
Have fun.

I'm still playing 20 year old Titleist 690 MBs that were passed around in a circle of good players back when I was in high school. Eagerly awaiting my first custom fit set to come in (JPX 921 Tours) ordered at the start of July.

I called the golf course I ordered through and they said Mizuno says expecting to ship September 1st 😕

Mizuno was only quoting 4-6 weeks at the time of order and I'm questioning whether the course actually put in the order way after we had everything ok'd and ready. They've been real sloppy in all my dealings with them

This turned into a bit of an unrelated rant I now notice but thanks for reading 😂

Is this for real? I feel like anyone in my normal groups would 1. Have no idea what clubs I was even playing or 2. Think blades are badass. Also, they would know to keep their mouths shut if they were normally being beat.

I play X-20 Tour irons from 2006-2007 (new to me in 2010) and a Bettinardi BB8 from around 2000 (new to me in 2021). I really don’t think I’ll get rid of the irons until I hit the serious “full fitting” upgrade button many years from now. By the way, love my SIM MAX and in my theory (likely flawed 18 handicap) the driver is the only thing we should be considerably chasing distance for, so the other 13 clubs are mostly about consistency.

Guys I play with are all into the technology.  I've tried technology and it doesn't help me.  Wider soles don't work at all for me.  I try newer blades and some are great but I haven't pulled the trigger on buying any.  Driver is a different tale.  Think my current TSi4 is much better than any driver from a few years ago.  Got the 4 because I like the smaller head and with right shaft works fine.

You're also right, irons are about consistency. As a PGA Tour player said, to be a good player it isn't about distance with irons, it is about distance control.

I play a set of 1983 Ben Hogan Forged Radials, a Titleist 910 D2, Mizuno R series wedges, I do have a Cleveland Huntington Beach 11 putter though.

I've bought and used other irons, but I always end up coming back to the Radials. The sweet spot is ever so slightly closer to the heel than any other irons I've played, and I think I'm dependent on it.

I’m still gaming 962 irons (2-W), an i15 driver and an old Adam’s tight lies tour 17 FW. I shoot low 70s on average and just haven’t liked much (if any) of the new stuff..

Anyone else in the same boat? Just haven’t seen anything that’s that drastic of a performance enhancement to replace my old stuff…
