Old clubs? Anyone still gaming 10+ yr old stuff

For those who play non-hollow forged irons, either mb or cb, I'm pretty sure the differences between old ones and new ones are quite marginal. While I'm itching to buy a new hollow iron set, I'm still staying with my irons from 2008. Ahhhh, every new release of a hollow iron set is just so tantalizing.....

Why ?

Is it because they look like a blade but are forgiving as some/many/most CBs ?

I tried out my new 990B's and hit them better than I expected, very high with my hook more under control. I don't think they are difficult to hit even though I shoot in the 90's(for now) as I've always played smaller irons because I need less offset.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

For many, the sharp look like a blade really helps visualizing clean contact (some good golfers actually struggle with chunky forgiving irons). Of course, this doesn't mean that such visualization will automatically lead to a better shot. And therefore, a bit of forgiveness helps. I think that is why many are excited about the new "tech" irons.

Wish I was smart enough to stick to my ol reliables rather than chasing new tech lol

well I do bag the original callaway apex irons and nothing has beat them out despite my efforts.  They’re going on 8 years old.  And I’ve stockpiled some sm6 wedges, but those are only five-ish years?  Putter is a Cameron from the 90s, but that rotates.

I've just stuck my old MX-700 3 wood back in the bag. Even with it just being the stock shaft, it's still my favourite fairway wood of any I've ever tried.

I hear hickory golf clubs are popular but there are none where I live. I would like to get a set of persimmon woods and some blades say from the 60's.: driver, 4w, 3i-SW and play them once in a while.

In the past couple of years and just yesterday, I have purchased clubs more than 5 years old

I bought a 16-18-20-23* Adams Super 9031 proto hybrid when they were $23.99 for the head only (the 23* is in and out of my bag regularly depending on where I’m playing. I put an OG HZRDUS BLACK 6.0 in it at 85g

I bought two NOS Adams Tight lies fairway woods (2013)  at 16* and 19* in women’s/ ladies (I like the slightly lighter flat charcoal look on the crown, and the face is just polished steel instead of black PVD which seems to leave a wear pattern rather quickly) I’ll pull the shafts and put my PX Evenflow Black 85g 6.0 shafts in them at 42” and 41.5”

I also bought an 18* Adams DHY recently ( I owned a 24* prior) after hitting the Titleist U500-510, TEE ironwood-EXS utility….. etc. I just haven’t found one that I like better. It’s not the longest and lowest spin, but it’s definitely the most consistent and workable for me. The DHY kicked my 716 T-MB out of the bag, and I thought I’d never let that go!

Some of the older Adams stuff still can’t be beat IMHO!

I have the same putter I started playing gold with in 92’ in the bag as well (Ping Pal 2)

My wedges are from 2006 and when they wear out, I’ll probably pick up a Hogan BeCu SI at 55* from the 80’s or possibly a Wilson Harmonized wedge or Cleveland 588

I regularly hit my Titleist 905r Driver from 2006 with a Proforce V2 “bumblebee” shaft in it at the range. It gives me the same ball speed as my Ping G410 lst with a TX aftermarket shaft and it’s 1/4 shorter at 44.25”

One of my playing partners still plays his Callaway X forged from 200? while the other still plays Lynx Parallax irons.

I was paired with a guy recently that played Ping ISI Nickel irons still.

Still have Ping G15 irons with regular graphite shafts, 3-SW. They're 12 years old, but see no reason to change. I'm not bagging the 3 or4 irons these days., I switched to Cobra F7 hybrids a few years back. I also bag a Ping Eye 2 SW occasionally, which has a 58-degree loft. I guess that's older than dirt...

for those who play older irons: do you have them re-grooved, re-chromed, refinished etc... i'm assuming it costs a lot these days.  I tried to get a vokey re-grooved years ago and I was told it wouldn't be conforming if they did and would cost more than its worth.

I sent my Eye2's to Ping and they reshafted and touched up the heads.  A couple of them were bent and after 30 years they still look amazing!

My friend's country club holds a wood-shaft tournament every year. People dress up in '20s-'40s attire and they hire a bagpiper to play while wandering the course.

I thought Ping won't refurbish BeCu clubs because they're toxic. Or something. I have a 3-W set my son plays.

Ping will not refurb Be clubs.  But this fellow will.  By all reports, does excellent work at a reasonable expense.

Ni ISI's play splendidly for a 25 year old design.  Reshafted to ones more suitable to current realities.  A mixed bag of old and new.  The V-Steels due for a shaft evolution during the off season.  The B60 has been seeing more bag time of late, due to making a few putts with it.
