Driver Fitting - Wowzer $$$$

Yoshimonster

Recommended Posts

Like others have mentioned - you can get the components and do it yourself or have a club builder do it for you with a pretty good savings.  With that tho, even if you paid full price, the driver is fit for you and should be good for numerous years without having to replace.  Guys here will go through thousands of dollars in drivers in a year, but balk at paying $1000 for something fitted that will be good for years.

I went in for a driver fitting for the first time in my life.

Loved the process and fully satisfied with the experience at the Club Fitter known nationally that starts with C.

I'm just more curious about the whole economics for the fitter and the buyer.

I came out 1.3K poorer.  Here is the breakdown.

- $499.99 for the Driver (Ping G425 Max)

- $475.00 for the Shaft (Diamana TB 60 S)

- $15 Grip (CP2 Pro)

- $150 Fitting Fee

- $50 Shipping

- $95.29 Tax

Grand Total: $1,290.28

Wowzer.  😢

I'll be getting the driver in 6-8 weeks.  (That's a good chunk of this season)

Question:

Isn't $499 the cost of the head, shaft and the grip for G425 Max?  Does the club fitter keep the original shaft and the grip??  Can I request these original part to be sent to me? Or maybe this just isn't how this works.  Someone please enlighten me.

P.S. Don't tell my wife. Thanks.

The shocker here is the shaft upgrade for $475.....thats insane.....a great fitter can find a shaft / head combo that can fit your game without that type of crazy spending.....i would have hit him with the club suggeting that shaft....i mean unless you are John Rham or someone else of that stature...thats insane

Appreciate everyone's perspective on this.

I've decided to cancel the order and will try to build one on my own as I have the spec sheet from the fitting session.

What I forgot to mention is that the shaft included the additional cost of puring and as someone mentioned here, also sprinkled with fairy dust.  😆  🤣

These high end fitters are just a scam. I don't know how you can view this as any more than that. Convince a person they need a high end premium shaft, then try to make sure that the high end shaft they "hit best" is either not available as a stock option or only available as a "proprietary shaft" from the fitting company. Then jack the price up on all the components, throw in a shaft PURE and away you go.

I guess some people don't care about money, and far too many just don't know any better.

Rahm's driver shaft will run you $70.

Thus the reason I’ll never buy a club after a fitting.  I’ll piece it together as I go.  I look at it as I’m paying them for their time and equipment, not to buy the club after.

I don’t have 1400 dollars into two drivers let alone one.  I have an M3, TSI3 both with KBS category 4 shafts for less than half of what you were quoted.  That’s insane

Good on you for canceling. Don't really get what peoples expectations are when going to a place like this? If you don't specify a budget beforehand or tell them you only want to be in stock shafts or w/e your pretty much commiting financial suicide in a place like CC or any "high end fitter". Kind of like going to Chanel looking for a gift and telling them you don't have a budget....

Wow strong feelings about this topic!!

Feelings Feels GIF by WE tv

So back to the original question.   Where does the original shaft go when a premium fitter sells the driver head at a full price?  Some assumptions on my end:

1. This is a price differentiation tactic against the less price sensitive consumers and both the fitter and the club manufacturer takes a higher % of profit from this type of sale.  This would mean the manufacturer just sends the head to the fitter.

2. These club fitters have separate business on the side unaffiliated with their main business flooding the market with stock components.  Selling the original shafts.

I personally think it's #1.  Anyone in the golf industry who can shed some light on this?  I'm super curious about this.  😃

I don’t think this is an industry wide question. Club Champion seems to have the purchasing power to request components from the manufacturer. Look at the second hand market no zero upcharge shafts, as soon as something comes out as no upcharge, the second hand market value is chopped in half.

LOL you can easily buy those parts online at full Price and have a local builder do it for you for $700 out the door

Or you can get those parts “like new” on eBay and get it built for around $550

I just sold a diamana TB shaft for $200

But if you hate money, having CC build it is fine.

…you just bought a $1200 driver that will be worth $500 as soon as you open the box before you hit it

Pretty much.  The CC business model is built around fitting fee, not so much the actual club purchases as they know most people won't buy the club.

Learning to do some of these things yourself and you can save yourself even more money.  Particularly since the shafts you can find pulls on eBay for a fraction of the price.

The guys you are referring to will not keep it for 5yrs regardless if they were fit, even if it was 100% perfect for them. Some of them will do multiple fittings a year and get different clubs.

In all fairness to Cool Clubs…..the $360 is retail price for an untapped raw shaft.  There is a cost to tipping, cutting to length and purchasing and installing an adapter tip. And paying employees who do the work properly.

It it more than I would spend? Yes.  But so is an $80k pickup truck that Ford sells more than I would spend.

Its funny though isn’t it?  Get fitted and purchase new equipment from PGA Superstore or Golf Galaxy and pay full retail and guys post that the fitting is inherently incompetent and you wasted your money.  Get fit at one of the presumably best fitters and pay more and guys post you got ripped off then as well.

One of these is incorrect.  For those that will say get fit at the great fitter and purchase elsewhere then how do you really know the shaft was tipped properly etc?

I already used a vehicle example and it really is much the same. You can buy a used Chevy and get where you want to go or you can buy a new Benz or what have you.  It still gets you where you need to go. But there is still a real value to having the more expensive vehicle.  And many here slamming one of the golf CC’s probably own one.

I think at $360 you are paying for tipping, adaptor, and other services, etc.

Those services are built into an MSRP.

Keep in mind $360 is not what the building gets for the raw shaft. It is quite dramatically less than that. That’s with the expectation for the retailer to cover sales, hard, variable costs, etc.

If the seller feels that their services warrant that and want to charge that said price, more power to them. Good for them! America!

I am just not going to be that guy.
