Is this shaft broken?

Just bought a second hand shaft and I noticed there is a gap between the adapter and the ferrule. I am wondering if it’s going to affect playability or if it’s fixable?

 

I believe it originally had a TaylorMade adapter on it, now it has a ping one. You can see the glue and the gap.

Doubt it’s broken. Looks like the ferrule just slid down and/or the shaft isn’t fully set in the adapter. If you’ve hit it, you would know immediately if it was broken. Dead feeling.

Haven’t Been able to hit it yet, am putting a new grip on so wanted to make sure before I did that. And ya that’s what I thought to, ive had the ferrule slide up with an iron before and was never an issue. I just wasn’t sure if it’s the same for graphite shafts or not.

Pretty common issue that can be indicative of a poor glue job. That is also technically the wrong ferrule to use on a PING adaptor since they have been using their own rubber collared ferrules since the 410 line. If you wanted to "fix" it, the proper ferrules can be acquired from Billy Bobs golf and the shaft can be pulled, cleaned, and reinstalled with the correct ferrule.

It's most likely fine.   My first guess would be that it's a gap that's always been there, not something that has appeared due to the glue joint failing (although that's also possible).   Ping adapters need a special ferrule to get a proper fit between the ferrule and the adapter.  It looks to me like it's just a poor fitting ferrule.  They probably couldn't get it any closer because the collar didn't fit and were too lazy to modify it to get a better fit.   They were likely using the different ferrule to hide the exposed tip prep after swapping the adapters (common when switching to a ping adapter from others).

 

Just monitor it to see that the gap is not getting any bigger.   If the looks bothers you or you might be worried anyways, you can get a proper ferrule here and have it redone.

Just an FYI.  It actually started with the "G" line.  Reportedly, the percentage of shaft failures at the top of the all metal g30 adapter hosel was high enough to prompt a redesign of the g30 adapter to add the rubber ferrule.

 

Personally not a fan since the depth that the ferrule is inserted into the adapter really cuts down on the length of the glue joint, and therefore the strength of it.   I much prefer the all metal CMX aftermarket adapters.

If you just wanna close up the gap for now, run it under nice warm water and usually you'll be able to slide the ferrule back down, I've done it with a couple of the irons in my set, with a dab of super glue and haven't had the issue return. 

 

But like mentioned above it may be in best interest to have the correct ferrule for that adapter installed.

Oh is that the case? I thought the G400 line didn't have them, so I assumed it came after.

My g400 3wd had it.
