Phil Mickelsons Mystery Hybrid!!

Yep, people forget how big those things are.

No need to figure out why their new hybrid is so big.  It's a continuation of the super, not something else.

The super hybrid was crazy hot... It was longer than some fairway woods..

Would love for Callaway to come out with something in between the Apex and Super Hybrid.  I play the Super and it’s stupid long but would love something a little smaller but with the same tech.

It is a real endorsement of the versatility of the Ventus Red. Players are getting the Red to perform like a friendlier version of the Black by tipping it 1.75 inches in a driver. Great thread worth checking out on those results. I am about to put a Red 70S tipped 3/4 of an inch in an Epic Max LS head.

Phil cut this Red 9X by 4.5 inches and I am sure most of that came off the tip but I couldnt say how much. But it is a 94 gram blank so he is playing it at about 85 grams.

They already do in various forms...7W/9W/Heavenwood/SGI Hybrid/GI Hybrids/etc

Callaway is the king of overlapping offerings. I guarantee you they make something already.

Wouldn’t Mavrik hybrid fit between the Apex and Super ?

Probably. They just make so many models that any huge SGI hybrid could fit as a tweener.

Bonded / Glued Hosel.

@callawaygolf Spill the beans....! Please.

Bonded/glued is better than an adapter, so this is good news.

Not if you like to experiment with a lot of different shafts..

Adapter is a bit easier in that regard but there are plenty of people installing and uninstalling adapters (to try different heads in different brands/adapters), so it's not a major significant difference. Also, there is no good reason for a player to be trying different shafts too often. For example, a player should be able to keep a set bag for several years. Mostly I just believe that a direct install of shaft to head has a better impact sound-feel than an adapter connection.

But the logic that a player shouldn't be trying different shafts too often is based on the idea that they should find what works for them and stick with it, which means committing to gluing that shaft into a head that they may want to replace in the future, which means buying another shaft or pulling the old one. I'll also take the ability to adjust loft/face angle/lie angle on the fly over committing to having a fixed hosel bent, which very few people will do anyway.

If you can get a fixed hosel club in the exact specs that you want then that is great, but outside that scenario I fail to see the benefit.

This is Wrx man, lots of shaft ho’s here who love to try the new offerings.  Having a bonded hosel just makes a very easy process much more time consuming.

Again, the benefit is mostly impact sound/feel.

They're coming out with an entire new line of clubs half a year into the life of the Epic Max/Speed that includes a chunky hybrid

This is equally unlikely, as Callaway's product cycle has been ridiculously easy to follow in the short time I've been around.

"but ShAMbotay, there aren't any Epic Speed/Max hybrids or irons, and the 2020 Mavriks are not only the "current" flagship model, but are showing signs of being phased out"

I don't know about you, man, but that club looks like it says "APEX" to me.

Callaway has two separate lines that come out in opposite years. They have been doing this for awhile now

Do you buy bonded hosel drivers?

I for one, appreciate adjustable adapters for hybrids and fairways. I have an Epic heavenwood I hit like a dream. So of course I grab a 3 wood. Can’t hit it. Sat in my garage. I rented clubs in Hawaii and hit the Cally 5wood very well.  So I started looking for an Epic Flash (their last adjustable fairway) but decided to turn my 3 wood up to 17. Well now I hit that thing great as well.

I still might grab a 5 wood but the adjustability is great.  Sometimes you’re in between clubs.

This looks to be the “utility wood” that Phil tried out of Akshay Bhatia’s bag at the US Open in a practice round. Johnny Wunder was talking about it on TXG’s podcast right after the open. Said he didn’t even know how to describe it as it wasn’t really a hybrid, but wasn’t a fairway wood either.

I don't understand. For example, prepping an adapter to the tip of a graphite shaft is just as time consuming as prepping a graphite shaft and inserting it directly into the club head.  I understand that if one has access to an inventory of shafts with a particular  head brand's adapter that would be a quick plug and play, but who maintains an inventory of shafts with correct adapter already installed ?

Yeah — I feel like he would’ve referenced that if it was similar to the Super Hybrid though. On the podcast he was almost at a loss for words, which makes it sound like it might have some different characteristics to what they’ve released before.
