Garmin Approach R10 Portable Golf Launch Monitor

the radar in the mlm 2 should be able to guess base spin without the aid of a camera so i'm skeptical they arent trying to upsell subscription renewals

It's not that it's incapable of reading spin with its radar and non RPT balls. It's just that Rapsodo will not report it to you without both the paid subscription and use of the RPT balls.

rpt ball is for the net or indoor spin no word on how good range spin is but its assumed that it requires a subscription.

Sub or no sub, you aren't getting spin with the MLM 2 unless you use their RPT balls. Its radar does nothing to read spin. And with anything other than the RPT ball, you don't even get faked/calculated spin metrics.

Depends on what niche you're talking about. MLM2 is going to be s*** at the range so anybody buying an R10 for that is still going to get one. It also costs $200/yr if you want spin metrics.

Personally, if I were just getting into the launch monitor scene and wanted cheap, photometric spin, I'd get a used Skytrak with GS Pro - they occasionally come up for $1100 and the GS Pro interface bypasses the need for a Skytrak sub.

True, but the R10 spin numbers without the RCT ball is crap, so they are about equal on that count. Don't get me wrong, I have the R10 and love it, only use it indoors with GSPro. Still want to see the actual reviews of the MLM2.

Ive got the same net and would not hit full lob wedge shots unless I was standing almost right next to the net. Note there is an extension that fits on the top which extends the top of the net to catch stray sky shots but even then...

I will hit punch/half 56° but really at normal distance say 3m from the middle of the net, I feel comfortable with PW and on. Gap wedge I usually get closer to the net as some shots feel a bit suss if I add dynamic loft.

Btw wish I had a setup like Carolina golfer2's!!! The space he's got...man 😍 my net and r10 operate in a claustrophobic garage complete with metal roller door 🤣

I agree my garage is from the 1930's 13 feet wide 20 feet long with stuff in there. Cant swing driver with garage door tracks in the way. But still great to be out there dialing in irons

I have been using the R10 since August last year mostly at the range initially, so with the limitation of range balls, but in the past couple of months I've been using it a lot more in a net we have at the club. I've found it pretty good in general and get just as much fun out of the experience in the net as I do on the range. I enjoy using the range sessions, coaching, approach etc on Awesome Golf as well as the virtual golf on both Awesome Golf and E6. This week after seeing som reviews about how much more accurate the device is using RCT balls I finally bought a box of RCT balls to put to the test vs my normal gamer. I haven't had the opportunity to thoroughly put the balls to the test but after a quick sample using 7, 8 and 9 iron and driver I didn't see that much difference with the irons. The spin numbers and distances were in the same ballpark. There was quite a big difference with driver however, the spin was much lower, around 2,500 vs 5,000 and accordingly I was getting better distances more in line with what I would hope/expect to see in the real world.

Obviously I need to do some more extensive testing but based on this I'm thinking for virtual golf rounds I could tee off using an RCT ball then switch to my normal gamer for approach shots, pitching and chipping etc. Might save some wear and tear on these expensive RCT balls. Lol

I bought used R10 on eBay on and a sleeve of RCT balls to start the journey of setting up a low cost sim. All the talk of MLM2 vs Garmin got me thinking…

I believe a software update is required for R10 use RCT balls. I have checked on search on don’t see anything to confirm software versions.

Could someone point me in the right direction? How do I do software upgrades on R10? Where to do I see what version I am running? The app?

Install Garmin express on a PC and connect the R10 via USB. That will tell you your installed firmware and update if necessary. Enjoy!

Only have a work laptop these days. Use iPad / iPhone for personal stuff. No idea if our crazy IT security will allow that.

There’s no way to check in the app?

If you are using an iPad, or any mobile device, it should just update automatically.

Question - if I buy one used, would I still be able to have access to the free e6 courses? Would the prior owner need to give me a username and pw?

Almost 100% if they have registered and linked the R10 to E6 then yes you need their username and PW. If they haven't you should be able to do it yourself. It's in the Garmin menu.

I bought a used one. I had to sign up for e6 and it looks like I have them?

I played with the app, but didn’t fully test it yet.

Maybe I'm wrong! I was sure it was a one time use code for e6.

Unless your used one hadn't been linked to E6?

🤷

It sounds like maybe the R10 and E6 had never been linked? I'm not sure how I can confirm this process. The only reason I was the R10 is for E6... I have a Mevo now and I honestly don't find it reliable for anything other than ball speed. I bought it used and couldn't connect to E6 because I'm at least the 3rd owner, so I can't really even use it for "fun". If I bought an R10 and couldn't play courses, it would be a waste.

I found this on the Garmin R10 Forum,

Hi mate. It's not an issue. The licence key gets generated and tied to your email address - not the Garmin device itself. So if you buy a used R10 and set it up on your Garmin golf app on the phone/ipad it will generate a license key for you to use

Hope this helps.

So do you just get a new product key with every new device it gets set up on? That's hilarious.

0% an expert on this, but it’s by Garmin account I believe?

So to activate R10, I had to download the app, register, and then connect the R10.
