Maui Recommendation

I’m in Maui and already played Plantation which was fantastic. I’m staying in Wailea so curious if anyone would suggest one of the Wailea courses(and which one) versus the Kapalua Bay Course? It looks like Linai will be too much trouble to deal with to make happen and not sure if they allow any play to non-guests.

Wailea Emerald and Gold are both very good -- much better than Kapalua Bay, plus very convenient if you are staying in Wailea. Skip the Wailea Blue course.

I agree with 4Eyes and if you like Happy Hours they have a good one with really good food at Gannons Red Bar near the pro shop at Wailea.

How busy are the courses?

looking at tee times everything is just about open. 
 

Hoping to grab a late tee time and zip around then have dinner

Wailea was pretty open, they spread out the tee times fairly well. By the time I finished Gold then decided to play Emerald the course was pretty empty.

Skip the bay course. Last week it took me over an hour thirty drive from Wailea, on a Monday. Then endured a six hour round with nary a Marshall in sight, then over an hour drive back in the dark. Door to door in nine hours for an unmemorable course xCept for two holes. They really jacked up the routing too, it’s so contrived now starting on a mediocre muni hole and finishing on the worst par 5

As others have said, stay on that side of the Island and save yourself some travel time. Although Kapalua bay is nice in terms of view, after a while, it becomes all ocean view anyhoo.

Going to Maui at the end of August. Staying at wailea beach resort.  Just booked kapalua plantation for 11am after breakfast at plantation house. Talk of a 6 hour round has me worried I’ll miss my dinner reservation at 745, which is closer to the hotel

Played Kapalua Plantation in Oct 2018, standard 4 hr round. Then it’s about an hour with normal traffic to Wailea, but count on extra half hour - island time 

imo, the Dunes was by far more fun to play with a variety of holes compared to Plantation. Obviously Kapalua has better conditions but Dunes was quite fun. More shots are needed, Plantation is so wide open, it gets boring. 
and it only cost $33 to play Dunes on a golfnow hot deal

I just got back two weeks ago.  I really enjoyed the Dunes course.  I thought it was the most difficult and had the most interesting holes.  Yes it's public, although the condition wasn't terrible for a public course.  If views are important to you (I could care less), there aren't any.  I teed off really early, second group.  I tried to get out in front of a twosome that was the first group off but they were locals and the started wasn't having it.  It turned out that after the second hole, I never saw them again, even though I played by myself and was done in 2:45.  Amongst all of the trips to Maui I have played Kaanapali, three Kapalua courses (back when they had three), Wailea courses, King Kamehameha, Maui Nui.  As far as fun factor on the course, The Dunes at Maui Lani is at the top of the list.

1. Manele Bay (Lanai)

2. Plantation Course

3. Makena (both courses)

4. Wailea Gold

5. Maui Dunes

 

Totally worth the trip on the Expeditions Ferry to play Manele Bay.

Now you have to stay at one of the Four Season's Resorts to play Manele

Just got back from my trip. Kapalua Plantation was probably my favorite course that I’ve ever played. Probably about an hour ish from wailea to the course. We had breakfast at thr plantation house (which was excellent). The course itself was amazing. Great views, fun layout. We teed off around 11 and the winds were really strong. Have never played in wind like that. Also hit the longest drive of my life on 18 (360yds) and got home in 2. Never mind that I putted off the green and ended with bogey 😂😂. Round was right at 5 hours, which seems about right for all the destination courses I’ve played in the past. 
 

also played wailea emerald, which was a lot of fun. Cool layout, great conditioning, and excellent ocean views.

 

would love to play at Manele one day but staying at the four seasons is not really in my budget at this point. 

will definitely be back to Maui in the future. What a fun island

got an upcoming trip. Im planning on a round at plantation. Im not sure if my cousin, who plays, will want to shell out the greens fee for plantation.

 

What other courses are still good but more budget friendly?

 

a few months ago i was on kauai, and of course came on here for golfwrx reco’s - found a wonderful gem for a twilight+cart for $44! If theres anything wven close to that, itd be amazing. Basically looking for sub $150 with carts.
