Great job joekelli.

I appreciate now is not the time, but after it's finished could you get some thoughts on how it all went?

For example, who he practiced/played with? How the course was set up? How his game stacked-up?

Knowing Kevin I am sure he will do a big post about the whole experience on facebook, So i will post that if he does. If he doesn't i will ask him to write something for me. I asked him yesterday if he could give me a rundown of his WITB and an hour later he sent me all the pics after coming off the range.

I can share this tidbit from last night chatting with him...

It's not an irritant but I am surprised the Senior Tour gets priority for TV rights over the Korn Ferry Tour. I used to love watching the Nike/Web.com tour on golf channel because you got to see young up and comers with game. I guess I am just surprised the Senior Tour pays as much as it does and has a full schedule (maybe it would be better to just do the majors and like 3 other tournaments). This is not me trying to reshape the world here but Alex Cejka is cleaning up out there, currently, and he had 1 win on PGA Tour and like 4 on the Euro tour. I'm sure Tommy Tolles is a nice guy but I don't see myself racing to the TV to watch him play.

I am sure someone will school me on the economics of this and that there are more people that would rather watch Jay Haas and Esteban Toledo play golf than Greyson Sigg and Stephan Jaeger but that is shocking to me. Also, the Senior Tour's purses are 3x that of the KFT and 2x the LPGA but maybe this is all backed up by the Sponsors. However, if for some reason the PGA Tour is siphoning off money to prop up the Senior Tour, that makes no sense. KFT, yes, because that is your minor league but not as a merit based pension for the older gents.

TLDR - happy to be shouted down about having a bad take on the PGA Tour Champions

I think that the Senior tour (yes, I said Senior and not Champions) gets more attention because there are more names that people recognize.

I would much rather see players I have watched in the past who have won on the PGA Tour, rather than a bunch of hopefuls on the KF Tour who you will not see again once they wash out.

I have zero interest watching the skirts and flirts (LPGA) tour.  All that really is to me is a fashion show dominated by Asian players. (FLAME ON!!)

This isn't a knock but is something I hadn't anticipated reading, the 150 yard 6i could be a real problem.  We read all the time on the PGA Tour that you have to make birdie on the par 5's as almost a given.  I think it is going to be very hard to compete with Goosen and Els and Singh where the par fours are all reachable and I would imagine half the par fives are reachable by them in 2 shots.  That is giving up a lot.

Have two very good amateur buddies playing: Robby Funk, and Tim Hogarth.

Funk made the cut the other two times he played in the U.S. Senior Open (2017 and 2016?); and Hogarth was either leading or in 2nd place a couple years back at The Broadmoor through 16 holes in round one, then faltered and played horribly on day 2 and missed the cut. Hogarth is a ball-striking machine. Has won everything there is to win in California but just doesn't travel much to play. Never has.

Funk took up the game at 26. I've played hundreds of rounds with Robert, both as a teammate and as a fellow competitor.

Insights like these are gold dust to me. I'm sure I'm not the only one lapping them up.

Did either Kevin or Drew have PGA or Korn Ferry / Nike tour experience?

Kevin spent about 12 years out on the Nationwide tour(now the Korn Ferry). He didn't play competitively for probably 10 years until just a few ago. Has played pretty well since coming back. He won the Pennsylvania open in 2018! So he definitely has game!

Yeah. I love hearing the stories of all amateurs in all the opens.

Drew is 100% an amateur.  Has done very well in some Maryland and local  Baltimore area tournaments, but never tried professionally.  He’s always had a day job.  Also coaches a local high school golf team.

That the course wasn't challenging enough to produce a qualifier that could hit it far enough to compete on the tournament course?

so he shouldn't be there unless he can "compete" and have a legit chance at winning ... got it ...

Having played Argyle (where he qualified) as well as most of the best/challenging courses in the DC/Balt area very few are really long hitters courses. They are more about accuracy off the tee and 2nd shot placement.  Often you just need to survive the brutally long par 4s and take advantage the rest of the course.

There's more to a course than length.

True this on that storm.  It meant business, which is not common for a storm at midnight.  Did a bunch of chainsawing this morning.  Didn't lose any trees, but lost a few significant branches.  Lots of trees down in my hood which is about 5 miles away.  I am sure OCC would have taken a good amount of damage.

It says nothing about that course at all. It does say Forrester has game enough to qualify.

Been watching this on TV today. Course is interesting enough but doesn't seem to be prepped like a typical USGA event course, some of the short par 4s have forests of unrepaired divots in the landing areas, not good. Also the telecast itself is very much a standard Golf Channel Champions Tour production and not what I would expect of NBC in a USGA championship. None of the usual NBC voices so far. Instead we get Papa, Wadkins, Cook et al.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
